That was...a really random thing to approach him with. His avatar wasn’t so bad to look at--he assumed it wasn’t, at least--but did people in online games like this typically compliment that kind of thing? What about actual fighting prowess? How stupid...

And to begin with--

“One potion could be the difference between life and death, you know.”

Though Rouga hardly seemed like he needed a lecture on that. Rouga seemed quite well-versed in games of survival and the like. 

“…Alright, it’s a deal. While we’re stuck in Eliesium Online, we’re allies.”

Rather…reluctant allies, at that. Tasuku was very certain that working with Rouga would be difficult and frustrating, considering their past clashing of values… 

Or…would it? Circumstances forced them into a similar situation. When cornered, the depths of the character tended to emerge from the crevasses of the personality… Tasuku was in for a world of surprise, that was for certain. Least of all all of the things he would learn about Rouga–and the striking similarities the two of them actually shared.

One thing was for certain: Rouga was powerful and crafty, and had good instincts that rivaled Gao’s, if not trumped them completely. As reluctant as he was for this alliance, Tasuku knew there would be a good ally in the older teen.

“Where should we start? …I guess it’d be hard to figure something like that out now. We’re better off just going with the flow and seeing what we can find out along the way, huh?”

A pause.

“…So, uh… I guess…we should add each other to our friend lists?”

God. The mere notion of calling Rouga a “friend” was so strange. Even if such a thing didn’t automatically denote friendship, putting his name in the same sentence as “friend” was…

Well, it wasn’t as if it was a party invite, right? Not yet.

Go with the flow, huh? It wasn’t the most well-thought-out or appealing of plans, but as things stood at the moment, it didn’t seem like they had much choice in the matter. They knew next to nothing about their current situation and the circumstances leading up to it, after all...and if they sought a solution to their plight, understanding those things first would be key. Mm... To that end, they would need to keep an eye out for game moderators and system messages, and gather what information they could from other players. Keeping in contact could also be beneficial, though that required...--

Honestly... His rage and frustration toward Ryuuenji Tasuku had cooled considerably since their first meeting, but even the idea of using “Ryuuenji” and “friend” in the same sentence felt utterly ridiculous. The term “friend list” had become the norm for the function, Rouga knew; and registering one another in their contacts would only prove to be an advantage. He knew all that, yet...--

“... Guess so.” The teen finally conceded, eyebrows furrowing a fraction as he waved his player interface into existence. A bit annoying that this had to be done manually, but considering just where they were...a little wasted time most likely wouldn’t be a problem. 

“Ha... This entire situation gets more and more ridiculous every minute,” he remarked. “I would have had a hard enough time believing I’d be working with you again...but being trapped inside a game? What a joke...”

Tch... Still, there was little point in fighting this guy now. Other than personal satisfaction, there’d be little benefit in it for him. So...--

“... If you know what’s good for you, you’ll stay out of my way in the future. I will not tolerate anymore interference from the likes of you.”

“What? I don’t need your–”

Charity, he was about to say (because let’s face it, Tasuku was far too prideful to accept even a minor healing potion from his “nemesis” that easily), but…Rouga was right. What good was there to reliving their past animosity and fighting amongst each other? 

Tasuku was prideful, yes, but he was also sensible. And though he hated to admit it, Rouga’s point was very, very valid.

Staring hard at the potion in his hands, he uncorked the bottle and downed it quickly, already feeling it work its magic on his wounds. He was only a level 1 Brave, after all; there wasn’t a whole lot of HP to heal to begin with.

As he was deliberating over where to throw it (he hadn’t seen any trashcans around), the emptied bottle disappeared in his hands, as he assumed it would in normal games. That was…convenient, he supposed.Still refusing to meet Rouga’s eyes, though, Tasuku cast a sidelong glance along the ground.

“…Thanks. I guess I owe you now.”

Well, then...mission accomplished. He’d had a feeling Tasuku would ultimately agree to his proposal--the kid wasn’t completely unreasonable, after all--but the confirmation did put him slightly more at ease, bizarre as such a thing was to admit. Maybe the game was getting to his head...

(Or maybe he’d come to rely on Cerberus's support more than he’d realized...? Tch...he’d probably start howling with laughter if he knew.)

“For one potion? Hardly.” Rouga shook his head, dismissive--then glanced at Tasuku again, expression serious.

“... If you’re going to get hung up on it, though, make it up to me by working with me to survive...and to figure out just how the hell we got dragged into this.”

Fumbling with the catch (it was unexpected!), Tasuku could only stare at the healing potion in his hands before looking up, utterly dumbfounded at Rouga.

Rouga…was offering his help?

“…Has this game gotten to your head already? Why’d you give this to me?”

Even if Rouga had more to spare (and he probably did, if Tasuku knew him), why would Rouga, of all people, help him? What was there in it for him?

Tasuku seemed confused...though, it wasn’t as if Rouga could really blame him. They’d willingly worked together a grand total of one time, and though their last parting had been on slightly more neutral(?) terms, the latter was undoubtedly still branded a criminal--even in a place like this.

However--

“I’ve thought about it...and I’ve decided it’d be in both our best interests to cooperate here.” Rouga answered. “We’re stranded in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by people we’ve never met or heard of before. You’re hardly my first choice in ally, either...but at the very least, I know I can rely on you to some extent.

“So use that damned potion already.”

“…I guess you have nothing better to do than laugh at me, huh?”

And there it is: Minus one healing potion from his inventory. Well, it’s not like it’s a big deal; he’s got plenty left for his own use, after all. No, no... He’s not such a saint that he’d give away his only lifeline. 

(Not for Ryuuenji Tasuku, anyway.)

“I don’t know about you, but I haven’t heard anything yet about what happens when you hit 0 HP...and you look as if a gust of wind could knock you down.”

Not good, she thought. It took his weapon and that left them with a problem. Even she could see that. She learned enough battle from the place she was before. She could at least distract them. Somehow.

Colette pulled out her rings and hurried to where she could be the most effective. She wasn’t going to let someone die in front of her. If she died herself, then she’d be happy enough knowing she did something. 

“No! You’ll die if you fight this many alone.” She looked back and gave the best smile she could. “Besides, you lost your weapon. If you don’t get it back then what are you going to do?”

Colette turned back to the monsters. She just had to give him time to get his weapon back.

“Pow Hammer!” she cried out and a small red hammer landed on a monster’s head. Yes! She remembered one of her artes at least! Wait, that was all she had wasn’t it? Oh no… Maybe.. “H-Hey! Over here!” A+ strategy!

... Was his lower level having an impact on the strength behind his attacks after all? Given how vivid and real everything around him felt, part of him had questioned whether any of his so-called stats actually applied, but this was--...yeah, realistically, that monster should have gone down. It should have, but it hadn’t-- 

--and based on the green bar hovering over its head, it wouldn’t stop until he got another hit or two in. 

This place really did play exactly by an MMO’s rules... What the hell...!

“......!”

And as if that revelation wasn’t irritating enough, that girl...just what was she hoping to gain through helping him? Rouga didn’t exactly want to die, given that he had no idea what the consequences of doing so would be--but if her in-game profile was anything to go by, she was just as new a “player” as he was! Trying to draw all of them over to her was just--!

“... Tch!”

Rouga darted forward again towards his fallen weapon, rolling out of the way of another monster’s massive fist before reaching out--

“Rrrrgh!”

--and wrapping his fingers tightly around the shaft of his javelin. He wasted no time in celebrating its retrieval, however, instead lunging toward an enemy that had responded to the strange girl’s provocation...and slashing viciously at its back.

Collecting, Colette could do. She was good at collecting things. Her inventory, according to the boxes at least, was full of useless things. She hoped, that somehow, something would drop something she was familiar with. A Gel or something! But they just dropped things that the game said was useless and had no explanation for and now the quests demanded hats of all things.

How was she supposed to get these herself? Her rings materialized (very convenient, she thought) and she thought about trying to find something that dropped the hats when she heard the sounds of the monsters nearby. Perfect! No, wait, not perfect. She briefly remembered the details saying party. 

A different voice caught her attention. Another player? She watched the player with the spear head for the monsters. She didn’t see anyone else with him though. 

“H-Hey wait! It’s dangerous alone!” She called out after him and followed. Maybe she could help him just a little.

... Had they--no, she--not heard a word out of his mouth? He may have been a low-level player, but Rouga was certain he could handle at least this many on his own. If he couldn’t...well, that would just be that. He’d die and face the consequences. Retreat was an option too, he supposed, though the thought alone left a bad taste in his mouth...--

That train of thought was quickly dismissed as one snuffling monster took a swing at him. Rouga ducked swiftly out of the creature’s reach, throwing his equipped javelin with as much strength as he could muster and darting forward when it made its mark--namely, the ugly thing’s eye.

“I’m fine!” He snapped, tossing a glare the girl’s way before returning his attention to retrieving his weapon from the screaming creature. “Don’t interfere, or I’ll--ugh?!”

The thrashing beast threw another punch in his direction, and Rouga only barely managed to raise his arms in time to shield himself before being knocked back.

Rrgh... Still on his feet, but he had to grab his weapon. The monster had torn it out and tossed it aside while attacking him...

“Just get out of here already!”
