              oh, she knows her aunt has suffered worse – she has proof in countless memories of alice bumping around the mansion, limbs encased in varying casts. but the last thing jiayi wants is for anyone in the family to fall sick, and she knows how vital good health is for her aunt alice and her escapades. the beginning of a slight pout abates before she can utter a response, however; fingers dart to tease her skin and the young girl laughs, chin tilting in small protest. 

 ❝just for a little while,❞ she declares with a smile, and she sits herself right down next to her on the chilly, white polished marble.  ❝i’m sure a cold could hardly stand a CHANCE against you, auntie. but i’d hate for you to feel unwell … especially with the party tonight!❞ she would be singing for the first time in public – if that is what kit’s house could be called ( she so seldom went out ). the family was having a small gathering, and jiayi had arranged a respective, tiny something. she scoots closer to the other, shoulders brushing. ❝i’ve already reserved a special chair for you.❞ and everyone, of course, but she had made each place card unique to the person. 

jiayi’s company may be unwanted, but not unappreciated. loneliness alice accepted her life only because she had no other choice, but when a choice is shown to her, she’ll accept this girl with her warm smiles and warmer heart over the chill of snow and an empty spot on the porch, no argument. ella’s influence, no doubt.

there was a time before where alice would yell and kick and run away from the presence of another, but she is not that alice anymore. now, she opens her arm, wraps it around jiayi’s shoulder, and pulls the girl snug to her side, blanket stretching to accommodate the two.

               ❝  you’re a bit of a stubborn one, you know that?  ❞ alice muses, lightly flicking jiayi’s nose.  ❝  i wonder whom you get it from. & don’t remind me of the party. i can barely tolerate those things. ❞ she’s only going for jiayi – with qing’s gentle, prodding insistence. she’s too good at playing to alice’s guilt, all while smiling with perfect innocence.

                    sinister, that woman.

lips curled into a scowl, she hides it against jiayi’s hair and pulls her closer until alice has both arms around her. ❝ god but you’re growing up so fast.  FIRST,  this party  &  NEXT i’ll be at your wedding, sitting on my hands so i can’t JUMP UP & OBJECT… ❞

                         surprise attacks never go well with auntie               alice; she announces her entrance from the door               instead. ❝ you’ll catch a cold if you stay out here                much longer, auntie, ❞ she murmurs but not               scoldingly, a mere suggestion before she places               the quilt light around her shoulders. the morning               snow is still sprinkling the backyard, but they are               safe beneath the balcony.

              jiayi’s voice is soft as a flower & just as lovely on her ears, but alice jumps anyways. always jumping, alice, especially at flowers, jumping so far, so high, head touching the sky---- but that’s from another time, another world. in this one jiayi’s putting a quilt around alice’s shoulders & she’s pulling the ‘thank you’ from her throat like roots, pulling the quilt tighter around her shoulders. she’s no qingling ; the cold touches her as any other person. her skin is just skin, much as she’d make people believe otherwise.

             ❝  what’s a silly cold to me? i’ve had far worse. but i appreciate the concern, jia.  ❞ a paper white hand sneaks out to tickle the underside of jiayi’s chin.   ❝  leave now, it’s not safe for you to be out here longer. thank you again for the quilt, i should be back inside shortly.  ❞
