Matthias & Maxime (2019) Brief Thoughts

This film has one of the best romantic tension build ups i have every fucking seen, THE YEARNING BRO. Matt is such an asshole but hes so compelling. One shot that really stuck with me was the underwater shot of Matt diving into the water when he went on his spontaneous marathon swim. That scene was really impactful, Matt trying to run away from these emotions that hes been suppressing for like a decade only to end up more lost in the process. The acting was actually amazing from Dolan and Freitas, they had so much chemistry and you could feel the anguish when they were in the same room but not close to each other.

The relationship which I found most intriguing, besides Matt and Max, was Max and his Mother. His brother having left them and leaving Max to try and save this women who doesn't want to be saved was so painful. The one moment where he thinks his Mother is doing something kind out of care for him is brutally thrown back in his face, just the nail in the coffin for their relationship. I am a little confused as to where the Mother ended up at the conclusion of the film. Max said his Aunt was going to be her guardian and care for her money but he stated she would be coming to his Mothers house to check in on her, but then Max ends up leaving the house empty at the end. Maybe she just wasn't there at that exact moment, but the house had looked completely cleaned out, like they were both leaving/had left. Maybe she found the money and just fucked off to get high again, idk. Point is, I felt that bit of info was poorly communicated.

My major critique is the ending, it felt way too ambiguous to be an 'open' ending and just felt like the film was forced to cut 10min off of its ending. It was way too abrupt, in a jarring way. I understand what Dolan was going for with it being open to interpretation and Max needing to pick between the two choices which were presented, it was just not executed well. A tiny nitpick I have is the second shot of the moving road from the perspective of front bumper on the car went on for a bit too long, that particular shot was done twice in the film. I didn't mind the first time, but the second time overstayed its welcome. Other than that, this was peak.

over the course of my ten plus years of being in various fandoms my favorite, by far, has been the terror fanbase. i feel like we arent getting in asinine arguments all the time just for the sake of arguing. like, i can have a grown up conversation with ppl about something i really like and not have to explain what subtext is and omg i love how much we are into actual real life polar exploration and science. I LOVE YOU GUYS mwah
