It’s so sad to me that Scavengers Reign didn’t get the attention it deserved on both HBO and Netflix. The storylines are intense and emotional and the art is beautiful. There are complex characters that have so much to them and the dynamics of the characters were made to be special to the audience. Kamen and Fiona have such a complicated and twisted romance; the way they displayed how unhealthy their relationship was is one of the most saddening things I’ve seen in animation media and yet it is put together so well. Azi and Levi’s arc was compelling - being able to see how Levi, (a robot experiencing malfunctions as well as true life), change throughout the series and become more and more curious about the world while being able to watch Azi - (the human that Levi is serving) - react to that is so intriguing to me. Sam and Ursula have a very family-like bond to me, they argue and have their complications, but they also have times where they are sweet to each other, as well as having moments of laughter. Something that means so much to me is the lesbian romance between Azi and Mia.
Everything about this show is so creative to me - the dynamics - the animation/art - the dialogue - it is all made with so much effort. After it didn’t make much of an audience on HBO, they canceled it on there then handed it off to Netflix, where it didn’t make much of an audience as well. Although, Netflix has yet to cancel it. The creators want a season two, and the show makes it very clear that there is more to the story. I would do so much for this show to get renewed - and despite there not being much of a fandom - it is nominated for an Emmy, which gives me hope for a second season, but despite the nomination, it has yet to be renewed. I really want more people to watch this show.
However — I would say to look into/search up the content warnings for the show before watching, there is a lot of disturbing body horror shown throughout the series, as well as other triggering content. The whole thing revolves around dark topics, and forms of abuse are displayed as well. So as I mentioned, look into those warnings before watching !! It’s such a beautiful series, and it’s so worth it in my opinion. It’s a sci-fi, so don’t go into it thinking it’s an extremely realistic and logical, however I do think a lot of the character dynamics and flaws are realistic.
