My grandma just called and, among other things, said “You have hips. That’s good! Men like hips!” and then she interrupted herself to say “Women like hips. People of your preferred gender like hips. I can never remember”
And I was like “Thanks grandma! My preferred gender is none of them, no thanks.” and she was like “Okay, no one will comment on your hips!” very self satisfied, like “aha, I have figured it out”
I think like half her grandkids are some variety of not-straight and she can’t always remember which is which but she is the epitome of like “she’s a little confused, but she’s got the spirit!”
I told my grandma that I’d told my friends about what she said and that some of y’all had said you wished she was your grandma, and she said “Well, you can never have too many grandkids!”
So like…consider her your honorary grandma* I guess?
*if you want an honorary grandma, that is
Update on my grandma: I told her my hair was standing up, but instead of straight line it was diagonal and she said “That’s okay, you’ve never been straight!” and then laughed so hard at her own joke I thought she was going to drop the phone
My shitty transphobic sister texted last night. We don’t really talk because of the aforementioned adjectives but last night she was apologizing for ruining Santa for me and saying that must have been traumatic and how sorry she was.
And I don’t want to talk, and she’ll win if I respond but I really want to be like, “That’s not even close to the most traumatic thing you’ve said to me and number one on the list is: ‘trans people don’t deserve rights’.”
Reached out to my cousin and he gave some great advice that I’m gonna post cause someone else might need this today:
The way I see it, society is fully wrong to place family in a place of entitlement in one's life. We don't choose our birth family. In a fully neutral, objective way... our existence is compelled by our parents. It's backwards for obligations to be placed on us as a result of that. When we *meet* people, they have to earn *and maintain* their place in our lives. It makes sense that family gets a shortcut past earning their way into one's life in the first place... but like everyone else they still need to maintain it.
When people do things to hurt you and refuse to listen when you say it's hurting you... that's not just failing to maintain the relationship. It's actively breaking it. And even if we grant some extra leniency to family, there's a limit. We don't owe anyone the privilege of causing us pain.
So I finally blocked her number. My parents will be disappointed, but I don’t care. I want to be done feeling the huge mess of negative feelings every time she reached out.

How to draw underwater settings: make everything floaty and weightless. Done! ✅ Unless you're a geek like me and want to learn all about how to paint the lighting: the highlights of the ripples, the bluish glow, the reflections.. there's a lot to think about but it's so satisfying once you get it right!

I was thinking of reblogging this again just because the original video is still amazing, but then I see the second video and lost my mind. The upgraded fan, the body glitter, the sheer fact that he got to do this with the actual singer.
Lately I’ve been really into being honest to people about my positive feelings towards them. I told my classmate that I’ve admired her creativity from the start and named a project of hers that I loved, and her face lit up! I took the train with a project partner the other day and told her that I always have so much fun with her, and it prompted an entire conversation about the difficulties of graduating from ‘classmates’ to ‘friends’ and both of our insecurities in this regard (and how we’re definitely getting coffee later). I express my gratitude honestly. I say what I feel if I’d be happy hearing it, myself. I remember details so that I can refer to them later. Once you realize how great you can make someone feel, all of those mundane moments become so special. It will maybe even create some lasting connections, something I think we could all use more of.
So I watched the Sci-Fi Channel’s Alice. (I hate their new spelling. I don’t use if it I can help it. It’s like the word “blog.” Sounds like the noise you make when you vomit, doesn’t it? Yick.) I will now attempt to convey my reaction through the internet version of interpretive dance, gifs.

I really liked this when it came out, and then life happened and I forgot about it for a while, then a few years ago I was reminded of it. I found a bootleg on YouTube, watched it and still liked it, so then I found a used copy of the DVD on Ebay. I wish it got more love!

Squicks are similar to disgust. But it differs from it in that a "squick" usually refers purely to the physical sensation of disgust and repulsion. It's more or less just the reaction of the body, not a morally judgement on something.
In regards to writing and reading it means that a specific topic is not something the writer or reader is feeling comfortable with.
