one more thing and then i swear i’m done, but this whole ‘stealing books so you can blog about them and get attention’ thing is literally just “make this art for me and i’ll pay you in exposure” warmed over. that author you’re stealing from already has an agent and a publisher - they don’t need your hype, they need your sales. if you don’t pay for their books now, they literally will not be able to continue publishing because the publisher will decide they’re no longer worth the effort so yeah. you stealing a book and saying it’s okay because you fucking tweeted about it? it’s never going to be okay and you are actively harming the author when you do that shit.

seriously, everyone. i’m not a well known author at all, but you’ve no idea how much purchases of my titles help not just me financially, but career wise. because i’m not well known, though, i’ll let you in on the financial side as i’m on a budget that rivals retired old folks in this country (source: my parents are retired on a limited income that is more than double mine!). 

my first month releasing a new title means i typically will net around $160-200 for that first sales period. the entire sales period is almost four months. that is not the amount i make per month, that is for all of those four months. after that, i tend to make roughly $30-50 for the rest of the year each sales period, if I’m lucky. i’m disabled and on benefits because of my disability. this means i am technically poverty level, but the only reason that doesn’t typically show is because of my choice of a career i’m trying to break into. notice, i say trying to break into. i have done steps and am starting to see a little progress, but definitely it’s still a “trying to break into” thing. 

i ended up googling my titles a few months ago. they were available to download for free! and not by my own hand. i make so little already off of those titles that take over a year to make, try to edit and put out there for consumption. there were 17 downloads when i first saw them. that would’ve put over $50 in my bank account had they been legit purchases. and you think i want you to hype up my book after you do that? why? so that others can then google that title and see where you downloaded it and steal from me (and my kitties, if you want more heart strings pulled!) directly? because that’s what happens. you don’t put amazon links or goodreads links in those reviews you claim are to hype up the book when you download them. i’ve seen those posts by those people. instead, most of you let every one know that you’ve downloaded it for free. and you claim there is no harm done?

ignoring the monetary value you have just stolen directly from my bank account, let’s look at the charts i no longer will receive credit for. my books don’t move up the charts when you pirate them. it does fuck all for the charts. it does fuck all for others maybe discovering me and my work. it does fuck all for making my name more known in the industry, because the book world is an industry not just a fun little side hobby.

you’re poor? that’s why you do it? well, honeybuns, step in line! i am poor, too. and guess what? i don’t pirate books, ever. and i still do reviews. i’ve still read 110+ books this year so far. borrow from the library, writers typically get kickbacks on books that are lent out from libraries. “oh oh i only do digital for my books” - most libraries have Libby for OverDrive as their online lending portion. that’s no excuse anymore. 

if you truly love books like you say you do, support the ones who give you your love. support the tireless efforts writers put in. it is not easy to write and pirating books directly impacts the careers of those you claim to love & support.
