where shane is center marimba

and ilya is center snare

like they both started marching Independent World the same year, in the same group, and both are insanely good performers and leaders of their section

like do any other band or drum nerds see the vision

center snare james potter with flashy tricks, intricate licks and a performers smile. he runs the snareline instagram account and encourages the other snares to film stupid trends. they go viral. center snare james potter who never messes up his feet timing, who helps the underclassmen learn to march and keeps bandaids in his bag for accidents. center snare james potter who teaching traditional grip comes as natural as breathing, who stares at the cymbal section leader during reps and almost trips.

tenor/quads sirius black who jokingly complains of back pain after rehearsal, who has been in indoor drumline since middle school. tenor sirius black who has a drum key clipped to his keys, his spocks are never out of tune. tenors sirius black who wears eyeliner and glitter on his face during competitions. tenors sirius black who flirts with bass four during water breaks.

bass four remus lupin who never rushes or drags, who duts the loudest and whose splits are clean on the first day. bass four remus lupin who is the heartbeat of the battery and wears sweaters despite the hot gyms. bass four remus lupin who checks up on the rookies, making sure they’re drinking enough water. bass four remus lupin who carries the weight like it’s nothing. bass four remus lupin who flirts back with the tenors section leader during tenor features just to mess with him. (he’s lying to himself)

cymbal section leader lily who marches trumpet in the fall but moves to cymbal line in the winter. cymbals lily who tapes pictures and memories to the inside of the cymbals locker so the underclassmen feel included. cymbals lily who plays just slightly too loud, who always has visual features, who smiles and lights up the floor. cymbals lily who packs a giant bag of makeup and puts glitter on everyone for competitions. cymbals lily who notices the center snare staring and doesn’t mind. cymbals lily who stares back.

As of 2025, here's some of what I think byler's favorite indoor percussion shows would be (and why)!

(Yes I'm combining two of my interests in honor of Mike's birthday being a week before WGI Indoor Percussion World Championships. Yes this can be interpreted as Slidevibes. And YES there will be a 2026 version next week. Maybe with the whole party.)

Mike Wheeler: Infinity 2025 - "Des Vu"

Why: It has very strong themes of memory and the present, and I think he'd actually have a great analysis about the show, but he'd just say it's his favorite because "the nature sounds in the beginning are cool". He doesn't have much to say about the musical aspect (ESPECIALLY as a trombone player...god imagine the rants he'll have to sit through next week as Will goes on and on about mallet technique...love them tho<3) and tends to focus more on visuals and themes in a show, hence why this one is his favorite.

Will Byers: Rhythm X 2025 - "Hands of the Creation"

Why: Firstly, who doesn't love Rhythm X? Second, I think he'd absolutely LOVE the themes of creation in this as an artist. I was tempted to choose a much more visually artistic show as his favorite (Matrix 2025 - In the Wake of Creation, link here) but after listening to some of the music from Rhythm X again, there's no way Will wouldn't hear that and not make it his personality for at least a week. Plus, it's about Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel! How cool is that as a concept? Since Will plays the vibraphone and participates in indoor percussion himself, I think music would be one of the first things he looks for in a show, with theme and visuals second. And in this au, he was one of the lucky people who got to see Rhythm X live, and let me tell you. IT CHANGED HIS LIFE.

I HAD MY WINTER GUARD COMPETITION!! MY TEAM WON 1ST PLACE FOR JV!!! AFTER OUR PERFORMANCE, WE WATCHED ALL THE OTHER TEAMS PERFORM AND IT WAS SO FUCKING COOL!!!
