Born in Chicago, Frances Taylor (September 28, 1929 – November 17, 2018) began her dancing classical ballet at the age of 8. She earned a scholarship to study dance at the Katherine Dunham Company. Frances was the first black ballerina to perform in the Paris Opera Ballet. She went on to perform in the original production of West Side Story, and opposite Sammy Davis Jr. in Mr. Wonderful, Porgy and Bess, and Shinbone Alley. She married Miles Davis is 1959, he made her quit her dance career and wouldn’t allow her appear in the film West Side Story. The marriage lasted for nine years, before his violent behavior became too much for Taylor to bear.
