You know when the baby comes out and they’re covered in this thick, white, gooky, substance? Most people are quick to wipe it off. Butttt maybe you shouldn’t. Why you may ask? The guck actually has several benefits for your baby (and mom) and it actually has a name, it's called Vernix. Vernix consist of water, lipids, amino acids, proteins, antibacterial and antimicrobial compounds.
Vernix is formed at 20 wks gestation and begins to stick to baby at approximately 27 wks. Premature babies tend to have more Vernix than full term babies, as the closer you get to 40wks the amount of Vernix decreases, and after 40wks the Vernix becomes absorbed by amniotic fluid.
Benefits of Vernix during Pregnancy:
Protects baby’s skin from amniotic fluid, moisturizes skin and protects from dryness
Protects the baby’s skin from infections as Vernix contains antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds
Protects baby’s skin from meconium, which is baby’s first poop
Helps baby regulate their body temperature
Benefits during birth :
Helps lubricate the birth canal and decreases friction
Prevents infection of the vaginal canal while passing baby through as it has great wound healing properties.
In closing, don't be so quick to clean baby off right away. The World Health Organization, also known as “WHO” suggest delaying baby’s first bath for the first 24 hours. However it is still important to dry baby off after delivery so their temperature does not drop. Vernix can be rubbed and used as a natural moisturizer for baby.

“Childbirth is arguably the most traumatic event the human body can undergo, and new imaging techniques show that up to 15% of women sustain pelvic injuries that don’t heal… “If an athlete sustained a similar injury in the field, she’d be in an MRI machine in an instant,” said Janis Miller, associate professor at the U-M School of Nursing. “We have this thing where we tell women, ‘Well, you’re 6 weeks postpartum and now we don’t need to see you—you’ll be fine.’ But not all women feel fine after 6 weeks nor are ready to go back to work, and they aren’t crazy.” Researchers found that women can take 8 months or longer to heal from pelvic injuries sustained during childbirth… Miller said, “A woman may have bladder problems, and in some cases prolapse of organs if the pelvic muscles are not functioning well enough to hold them in place.” She and a team of midwives, radiologists and obstetricians studied a group of pregnant women at high risk for pelvic muscle tears, and used MRI to diagnose injury and track healing time… 25% of women showed fluid in the pubic bone marrow or sustained fractures similar to a sports-related stress fracture, and 2/3 showed excess fluid in the muscle, which indicates injury similar to a severe muscle strain. 41% sustained pelvic muscle tears, with the muscle detaching partially or fully from the pubic bone.”

Cutting the umbilical is like a right of passage. It holds a special meaning in our culture/society. Seconds after the baby is born most doctors ask “Who’s wants the cut the cord?” Not thinking much of it, someone close to mom/baby happily agrees, takes the scissors and severs the cord. But what if I told you it was beneficial for your baby to wait awhile before cutting the cord? Insert shocked emoji. It’s called Delayed Cord Clamping (DCC)
When the baby is born the placenta, which the baby is attached to via the umbilical cord, still houses anywhere from 25-60% of babies blood supply.
Could you imagine how you would feel missing such a huge percentage of your blood supply? I’ve been severely anemic before and let me tell you it is NOT fun.
Waiting even an additional 30-60 seconds allows more of the blood to pulse into the baby, which means more oxygen and more immunity for baby. Several clinical trials over the last decade show that DCC gives babies extra iron stores and lowers their risk of anemia. You can even wait until the cord stops pulsating and turns white to get the most benefits. An additional benefit of DCC is better motor and cognitive skills in comparison to children whose cords were cut immediately.
Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) & Women’s Health Organization (WHO) recommend DCC
DCC can also be done for preemies and proves to be most beneficial for babies born preterm.

Liquid Gold aka breast milk should definitely be considered as one of the wonders of the world. In addition to all of the wonderful things we are already aware that breast milk does, it has recently been proven that breast milk helps baby tell time and develop a circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is the internal timekeeper we all have that helps our bodies distinguish between night and day.
Milk in the morning tends to have 3x more cortisol than evening milk. Cortisol is a hormone that promotes alertness. Melatonin, which I’m sure most of us have heard of, can barely be detected in this milk as melatonin helps sleep and digestion and is more prevalent in evening milk. Melatonin levels rise and peaks around 12am.
As of now researchers are unaware of how mistimed milk affects the baby as this discovery is new. In the past, milk was given to the baby at the time it was produced. Now days over 85% of moms have pumped milk at some point in time. But from the sound of things mistimed milk could cause sleeping and digestion issues. Giving a baby a bottle of morning milk in the evening, may be the equivalent of cutting the lights on right before bedtime. But this can easily be corrected by either feeding baby directly from the breast OR labeling expressed milk with the date AND time it was pumped.
Hope this post was informative! Thank you for tuning in!

What is a doula one may ask? Doulas can help with all types of things. This includes creating a birth plan and teaching different techniques to get through labor. The postpartum doula is for after the baby is born. A postpartum doula may help with teaching to breastfeed the baby, running errands, cooking dinner, and much more. Abortion doulas can help one cope with the many emotional changes that may occur from choosing abortion.
