Head Canon Week... Alec Trevelyan in the kitchen

Alec can cook. Wondrous meals. Unexpected treats. Culinary delights from his missions all over the world. However, he is a disaster waiting to happen in the kitchen. Manages to use every pot and pan when cooking, not to mention most of the time all the utensils also. And he has yet to master the skill called cleaning up after ones self. It is not unusual for the Quartermaster or James to come home and find things such as this waiting for them.

Agent Provocateur

There’s a fantastic post by @castillon02 about how French dressing that Bond enjoys in the book version of Casino Royale is a different thing in the UK than in the US, and it made me think about the word association scene in Skyfall. Namely, the bit where Bond is asked the word “Agent?” and he replies with “Provocateur”.

Now, that sounds perfectly neat and espionage-y, but Agent Provocateur is also the name of a fairly famous UK brand that does bras.

So for the UK audience this reply from Bond has a double meaning that goes really well with what Bond is trying to do in this scene: show off how unpleasant and empty he can be, because that’s his state of mind at that point. He’s depressed, tired and angry and wants people to be fed up with him. There’s something vaguely (and intentionally) sexualised and cheeky/disrespectful about this answer, which is precisely why Bond went for it. You know, to show “Oh, look how annoying I am.”

I thought I’d make a short post about this because I don’t know how many people from outside the UK know this, and because trivia is fun :D

I couldn’t commit to a long drawing today, but I certainly couldn’t miss Classic Bond day! I watched almost every Bond movie in six months, and besides the first four Sean Connery movies and OHMSS, Dalton’s short run as Bond was my favorite of the classic Bond experiences.

Here’s a messy 7min pencil drawing of the Bond I always imagine when I’m reading the Ian Fleming novels.

Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes, in disguise) and Jared Harris (Moriarty) in 2011′s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” – one of the few modern takes on Sherlock Holmes that truly pays tribute to the canonical Holmes’s penchant for wacky disguises. And yet another way the RDJ Holmes movies are Far More Canonical Than You Think.  (For those who may not know, “canon” in Sherlock Holmes studies refers to the original Holmes stories and novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. And the RDJ Holmes movies sometimes get criticized as non-canonical by people who really should get to know their canon better…) 

Yes, the Downey movies are adaptations – as are ALL Sherlock Holmes movies and TV shows, or anything that isn’t actually the canon. And yes, they are action-adventure-comedies – which is their own creative take on adaptation. But – they are done with a lot of heartfelt affection for the canon, and they’re a joy to watch for canon fans because you can pick out the MANY canonical references along the way.  If you love Sherlock Holmes, watch the RDJ movies with an open mind and heart, and I think you’ll love them as much as I do!  LOOKING FORWARD TO SH3 – coming in December 2020!!
