David Fincher Doesn't Give a Shit About the Audience (And that's the best thing for us)
I went and did what apparently everyone on Facebook did this weekend. No, I did not rush to the nearest Starbucks and order a Pumpkin Spice Latte (or a #PSL as I am learning it’s called). I instead bolted to the nearest theater and saw the newest addition to the Fincher film library, Gone Girl. I absolutely loved the movie, let’s get that out of the way now but while watching the movie (most of it on the edge of my seat) I realized something: David Fincher does not give a shit about the audience.
Fincher has always specialized in the dark. Whether it’s the mood, score, or physical look (seriously I think only Clint Eastwood uses a darker color palate) Fincher’s films have always thrived in the gloomy. This is not to say that his movies aren’t funny; Fight Club in particular has some truly laugh out loud moments. The thing about a Fincher film is that he does not care whether or not you can peg his characters into certain stocks or if you can’t figure out if you are watching a comedy, thriller, or drama. It’s for this reason that he stands in a league of his own when it comes to film making.
Lets look at Gone Girl with this in mind (obviously spoilers if you haven’t seen it, and if you haven’t: what the hell is wrong with you?!?). Fincher has a history of elevating iffy source material (Panic Room was much better than it had any right to be) and this was no exception. He takes a novel that had the feel of court room bickering back and forth (I enjoyed 80% of the novel by the way) and turned it into a full blown thriller (Rosamund Pike deserves a lot of the credit here too). It wasn’t enough that Fincher was showing a dark twisted story, he had to let the score hammer it home. It didn’t matter whether or not NPH would have actually bled that much, he was going to turn the stomachs of everyone in that theater. Just when the movie had gone a while without even the dimmest light, he got a laugh out of everyone as they watched Tyler Perry throw gummy bears at Ben Affleck.
This is what makes Fincher’s movies a special experience. You don’t always know what to expect but you will leave the theater feeling exactly the way he wants you to; whether you like it or not.
When is Community coming back
It was supposed to be October 19th but NBC has decided to keep it on the shelf for now (couldn't tell you why). They replaced the recently canceled Animal Practice with Whitney (again couldn't tell you why) but this should mean that Community is next in line. For now here are Troy and Abed explaining the air date:http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7LV7M_WeGX8
Thursday Recap
Every week I will be doing a rundown of the exhausting 3 hours of television that I cram into my Thursday evenings (though after seeing my first episode of Two and a Half Men in a while, it may be 2 and a half). They are reviewed in my order of quality, so enjoy.
30 Rock – This was a masterfully conducted episode that was clearly spawned directly from the mind of Tina Fey. It had everything that we have grown to love from this show (A plethora of one-liners, a powerful Jack Donaghy, and a celebrity cameo). The show featured three plot lines. The prominent one being the battle between Tracy and Liz about whether women can really be funny, something that was proved not only by this episode, but also by Jenna and Liz’s two woman show from their struggling days in Chicago. The argument starts when Tracy agrees with Stephen Hawking on twitter that women can never be as funny as men. After much debate (which included Tracy naming his fingers after female comics and discovering the hilarious monkey he found on the internet was actually a female) Tracy finally succumbs to Liz and admits her talents.
30 Rock has become a show that seems to bring out the best in its comedic guests (See Bryan Cranston, Brian Williams, etc.) and that continued with the dynamite appearance of Ryan Lochte. Lochte played the sex idiot of Jack’s heiress to the Sbarro pizza fortune, and delivered three classic lines. Hard to decide which was best, I think I have to go with his hopelessly optimistic “No, I’m pretty sure we’re in love.” response to Jack’s comment that he served the role of sex idiot.
This episode featured great Jenna moments including her doing kegels while mulling over the decision to perform her play and her struggle to deal with inevitability of what happens to aging female actresses, saying she was tired of “losing a push-up contest to Julie Bowen to see who gets to play Kevin James’s mean wife who he’s sick of having sex with.” “Stride of Pride” proves that if anything, there are atleast two very funny women in show business. Well done Mrs. Fey, well done.
Parks and Recreation – Watching how good these shows have become makes it that much more difficult to deal with the inevitability that they will soon be gone forever. “Sex Education” was a solid episode that featured Leslie in another political battle, Tom Haverford ripped from his beloved screens, and Ben having one of his nerdy-ier episodes to date.
The episode began with a play by play (or should I say tweet-by-tweet) account of Tom’s fire hydrant crash. As his punishment he was forced to give up all screens for a week, which means the tech heavy Tom would have to take a week off from pinterest, his podcast with Jean-Ralphio and even twitter (#BLESSED). The week started poorly as he arrived an hour and a half late for work because he couldn’t use his beloved GPS. The episode then featured Ron taking Tom through the woods allowing him to get all of the technology out of his system. Unfortunately Ron was unaware of how much Tom really had in him, and eventually forces him to stop before they move towards “feelings territory”.
The rest of the episode featured great one liners from Ben and Donna and also some laugh out loud moments from Andy and Anne. This episode was Parks and Rec at its best.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – A big improvement over the first episode. “The Gang Recycles Their Trash” featured a recycling of some of the better older bits and characters from the past season. Frank insists that he has a way to undercut the unions and take over trash disposal for the city, as long as everyone follows his plans. Of course they don’t, as Mac, Charlie, and Dennis decide to (successfully) pick up trash door to door in a limousine and tuxedoes, and Frank and Dee try to convince their former (gay) enemy to give them the contract. Hilarity and not so subtle racism ensue (Dee returns as Latina Martina Martinez).
The Office – It’s no secret that The Office has struggled to replace to hole that Steve Carell left behind. This episode was a prime example of it, as Andy Bernard began to take on a Michael Scott-like hatred for Toby (and Nelly), but without the humor to balance it out. Craig Robinson and Brian Baumgartner did the best they could to breathe life into this flat episode (even guest director Bryan Cranston couldn’t add a spark). Hopefully this show gets back on track. Kevin’s ability to only do math involving pies and another classic prank from Jim were both hilarious, but still it feels like something is missing.
The League – This season of the league has moved far away from the original theme (Fantasy Football) and has really tried to go for the homerun, gross out, angle. A solid episode, but this show has way more potential then to give us a predictable half hour about foreskin. Taco remains one of the best characters on TV, however this show lacked the humor that is brought on by its true fundamentals; guys caring way too much about a silly game.
Two and a Half Men – Jon Cryer’s recent Emmy win has given me knew interest in watching this show. However, this week’s episode – costarring a very unlikeable Miley Cyrus – has all but diminished that interest. The jokes were predictable and too few and far between. I will be giving it one more chance this week for the simple fact that Miley Cyrus won’t be returning. I could be moving to reviewing Up All Night in two weeks, we’ll see.
So that’s that for this week. Hope you enjoyed it.

Box Office Preview
Our first box office preview in weeks and it is a Tyler Perry movie that is the headline? That cannot be a good sign. This week we have Perry in Alex Cross starring as the most unlikely action star since Michael Cera in Scott Pilgrim squaring off against the 4th installment in the Paranormal Activity franchise (yes you read that right, there are now 4 of them). Look for an easy win from Paranormal Activity 4 and a tighter race for second place as Argo's buzz starts to heat up (it has Bryan Cranston in it for gods sake). Lets take a look where I think the movies will fall this week:
Paranormal Activity 4 - $40 Million
Alex Cross - $14 Million
Argo - $13 Million
Hotel Transylvania - $11.7 Million
Taken 2 - $11.4 Million
Movie to see this weekend: Usually this category features a movie that is showing in like 3 theaters (most likely in back allies) nationwide but I am going to go easy this week. My choice this week is Argo, yeah that's right I even picked one that will do well at the box office (if my predictions are accurate, which you know they will be). If you have been seeing Ben Affleck's face (and weird hair) plastered around this movie will serve as an explanation. Argo tells the story of a 1980s CIA operation to remove 6 American diplomat personnel from Iran. The movie boosts a great cast: Affleck (also serving as director), John Goodman, Alan Arkin, and oh yeah did I mention Bryan "Walter White" Cranston? The movie is already picking up some major award buzz and (best of all) it is playing in a theater near you.
Come back on Monday and see how these predictions turned out (amazingly I'm sure).

And oh yeah: What are you guys seeing this weekend?
Teaser Trailer Wednesday
Well you know what they say; "When in Rome", no wait, that's not right. Oh, I got it, "give the people what they want (phew that is much better). After not being able to hear the end of it I think it is about time to give you all another installment of teaser trailer Wednesday (I figured you were all a little rusty on seeing it as TTW). We have 3 good trailers for you guys today so enjoy:
Hitchcock: Well if you haven't guessed by the trailer name this is the long awaited (and star studded) Alfred Hitchcock biopic that has been in the works for a while. The film follows Hitchcock (played by Anthony Hopkins) as he attempts to make his (now famous) film Psycho. The trailer really brings it and expect this one to be a contender come awards time (the release was conveniently moved up to accommodate award show deadlines). The film has two strong female leads in Helen Mirren and Scarlett Johansson, both of which could also garner some award recognition. The film is due out November 23rd of this year:

A Good Day to Die Hard: Sometimes there is nothing like a warm hearted indie darling to get you through your day and, you know what, sometimes you just would rather have some pure, unadulterated, mindless action. Well folks, this one most definitely falls into the latter. The film contains a very complex plot full of fantastic character development and motifs. Now just in case you believed me this movie features one thing and one thing only John motherfuckin McClane (Bruce Willis) kicking ass while stuff explodes. This time around Mr. McClane employs the help of his son to take on Russian forces (sure). The newest installment in the Die Hard series is due out February 14th (if this isn't the perfect Valentine's date movie I don't know what is):

The Iceman: These are the type of movies that make me happy I have a platform to share my findings. This movie has a bit of everything; a powerhouse cast (Michael Shannon, James Franco, Chris Evans, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta), a great story, and some solid action. The movie tells the story of Richard Kuklinski (Shannon) who became known as The Iceman (see where the title came from) after his string of cold blooded killings (all the while maintaining the front of devoted husband and loving father). The movie is based on a true story and there are actually a couple great HBO documentaries about Kuklinski. The movie is due out for a limited release on September 1st:

Alright well it was a short one but hopefully it kept you guys at ease for now (that's what she said? too forced? moving on). This is now two days in a row I have gotten stuff out so I'll try to keep up the pace. Look for another update tomorrow.

Movie Update
...and we're back again. As was pointed out to me, I made a promise to start writing again and who am I to leave fans in the dark. We have some exciting news on for today (we better after the time we took off I know). So I guess there is no point in waiting (unless you like this bit of banter we have because I could keep going) so let's see what we have:
Aaron Paul news of the day: I have never been shy about my love of Breaking Bad and now it looks like (2 time Emmy Winner!) Aaron Paul is starting to gain some momentum in his post BB career. Paul already has an indie darling in the making on the limited release tour with Smashed (if you haven't seen a trailer for it yet, you're missing out) and now he has booked his next film. According to reports Paul is lined up for the lead role in the adaptation of the video game Need For Speed. The movie is set to have an original story and not be based on any one entry of the popular games but look for the film to give Paul a shot at an action franchise. The movie is set for a 2014 release.
Award show news of the day: I am a complete sucker for the yearly awards shows. Yes I know, the great movies don't always win (or even get nominated) and it is really just an over publicized and political celebration of celebrity. None of these facts have kept me from filling out an Oscar ballot every year so you can imagine I am still glued to any buzz leading up to awards time. With the Oscars making their host selection recently (Seth MacFarlane; should be interesting) the Golden Globes have finally put their cards on the table (and it is a pretty great hand). As announced yesterday, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will take dual hosting duties at this years ceremonies. The GG have been hosted by Ricky Gervais the past 2 years to mixed reviews (all positive from me though) so it is not surprising to see a change getting made. I couldn't be more thrilled to hear this announcement and it will be fun to see what these talented ladies do with a whole awards show.
That is all I have for right now but there could be more coming later (what a teaser). Thanks for sticking with us as we get our feet back on the ground, the rust will come off soon.

Hey Strangers
So it looks like work has taken priority over writing this (for shame I know). Through all the time that I haven't been writing it has been in the back of my mind (just write, you know a little bit, it can't hurt) and it got me thinking.
What could it be about writing for this tumblr that I can't get away from? Then all of a sudden a light bulb came on (not a very bright one but a light bulb none the less); movies are my greatest escape. The time that I spend writing about, reading about, and watching them my mind couldn't be clearer. It never mattered to me whether or not people were reading what I was writing (though I know you were all glued to the computer screen), it just mattered that I got to do it.
For this reason I am going to start writing again:
I'm sure this is everyone's instant reaction, but I think I am going to take a new approach this time around. I am not going to be writing everyday just because I need to fill a day (I know it will be tough to go a day without this but try). So somewhere in this post there is a point: I am going to start writing again for me (and I'm sure there will be others that enjoy it, I hope). So look for some occasional updates and trailers, you know whenever I feel like it.

Best part of last nights Emmys!
Movie Wrap Up
Hey guys we're back for another movie wrap up (I told you we would work hard this week). Today we have a brief movie and TV update for you guys, we have to ease back into this one. Well I guess that is enough set up, let's see what we got today:
American Idol news of the day: This has a very busy off season for the slowly declining reality singing competition. While the addition of JLo and Steven Tyler didn't give AI the ratings boost it wanted, it hasn't stopped the show from trying the same model with new talent. After adding Mariah Carey and having other artists in the running (including Keith Urban, Adam Lambert, and Romney supporter Nicki Minaj; couldn't help it) it looked like Randy Jackson was on his way out. Well even after it was reported the the Dawg himself was going to come back only has a mentor it looks he will in fact will return to his old chair. This means that the panel stands at Carey, Jackson with Urban and Minaj most likely to ink deals.
Channing Tatum news of the day: As much as I try to stay away it seems like we end up bringing this "actor" up once a week. There have been rumors since Magic Mike had a successful theatrical run that a sequel was coming. Well Tatum has added a little bit more fuel to the fire. According to the actor the sequel is shaping out to be a road trip comedy, having a bunch of the strippers get back together and take their show on the road. If this wasn't enough to get you sprinting to the theater with gyrating hips there is some more (slightly weird) news here. There have also been rumors that Tatum will hop in the directors chair. Well I would say I have given you all enough to digest (just try to keep it down).
Marvel news of the day: While Thor: The Dark World has already begun filming (new set photos came out today) casting is still moving foreword. The latest rumor is that Viggo Mortenson could step into the role of Dr. Strange. While this would be exciting news I have to put heavy stress on the fact that this is indeed a rumor. Recent reports have stated that the sequel will spend less time on earth so it would make sense that a character like Dr. Strange would pop up. The movie is due out November 8th 2013.
Well that does it for me tonight folks. Tomorrow will be the triumphant return of TTW!

Box Office Results
Well I was right about a few things this weekend (and yeah wrong about a bunch too). This was a very weak weekend at the box office and the new movies definitely underwhelmed (even more than I expected). Let's check out where everyone placed this weekend:
The Expendables 2: $13.5 Million
The Bourne Legacy: $9.3 Million
ParaNorman: $8.6 Million
The Campaign: $7.4 Million
The Dark Knight Rises: $7.1 Million
The highest opening for a new release was the Joseph Gordon-Levitt vehicle Premium Rush which premiered at $6.3 million (good enough for 7th place).

Saturday Spotlight
Tom Hardy
Tom Hardy may very well be the breakout star of the summer for his role as the chillingly terrifying villain Bane in the final installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman saga The Dark Knight Rises. Hardy, 34, has a very interesting life story that few know, so here goes.
Edward Thomas Hardy (first thing you didn't know about him: his first name) was born in London England in 1977, and studied extensively in drama schools during his time coming up as a youngster. Hardy won a modelling competition when he was 21 and signed a short lived contract with Model One. He also began his acting career in the HBO mini series Band of Brothers. in 2001 Hardy made his film debut in Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down. During this time, however, Hardy suffered from a severe alcohol and crack-cocaine addiction. Hardy did eventually kick the habit, entering rehab in 2003, and continuing to stay clean and sober to this day.
With sobriety came a clear mind and a flourishing young acting career. Hardy gained much acclaim for his role as Stuart Shorter in Stuart: A Life Backwards. Hard continued to have overseas success in films such as RocknRolla and Bronson (the first role where he would show his ability to transform his body, adding 42 pounds of muscle).
In recent years Tom Hardy has exploded, with roles in films such as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Warrior, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and This Means War. Hardy can been seen in the new film Lawless and is said to be playing in the new reboot of the classic Mad Max trilogy. After a rocky start, Tom Hardy appears to be a force to be reckoned with.

Box Office Preview
Well hopefully you guys got enough box office excitement last weekend because in comparison this weekend doesn't quite stack up. With only 2 (relatively) big releases coming out this weekend's results will end up looking very similar to last. This week we see Premium Rush and Hit and Run hit theaters, both have impressive casts and are hoping that a late push in marketing will put them on top. The best bet of these to take the top spot is the Joseph Gordon Levitt staring vehicle, Premium Rush. Lets see how the weekend is looking (don't forget how spot on my predictions were last week):
The Expendables 2: $14 Million (yup that is all it will take to win this week)
The Bourne Legacy: $9.2 Million
ParaNorman: $9 Million
The Campaign: $8.5 million
Premium Rush: $7.5 Million
Movie to see this weekend: Sleepwalk With Me, I'm sure why I do this to myself week in and week out but I am yet again going to choose one that I will not be able to find anywhere near me. This move has been receiving good reviews (sitting at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes) and looks to be a great indie comedy. The movie follows a stand up comic who starts to reevaluate his life when he starts to have bouts with sleepwalking. We posted the trailer one week in TTW but in case you missed it (though I know none of you guys would skip a week) it is posted below:

What are you guys seeing this weekend?
Kids, that's how I met your baby daddy.
I feel pretty green about it.
