Christmas with autism
#1 OPENING PRESENTS IN FRONT OF PEOPLE - how are you meant to react??? It’s so hard to look extremely pleased??? It’s not that you’re not grateful, maybe you absolutely LOVE the gift but saying “thanks” isn’t enough but also it’s not in your capacity to scream OMG THANK YOU without it feeling staged. The worst anxiety of the year
#2 buying people presents - it’s so hard to figure out what somebody else might like, maybe you only get them small presents - then they give you a big box. What if they are disappointed?? what if you didn’t get them enough/the right thing/something they wanted/something they don’t already have??
#3 people opening their presents in front of you - this follows on from #2 but what if they are disappointed, or they already have the gift you got them, or they got you something better and you feel like you didn’t put enough in
#4 food - christmas is so full of food with loads of different flavours/textures, it’s either that or lots of sweets/chocolate
#5 matching gifts - counting exactly how many gifts people in your family have and trying to match it so everything is in order/equal on the day
#6 so little routine! - family and friends appearing out of nowhere, you eat at weird times, you’re not in school/work and basically your entire routine is thrown out of whack
#7 everyone and everything is so busy all the time! even in the run up to christmas - everyone is stressed, busy and rushing around
#8 everyone wants to SEE you - you have to be around so many people, people want to see you open your gifts/want to spend time with you, everyone is in large groups and fitting all of this around a routine is so exhausting!

Some days things are so hard. Mostly I have things under control, enough of a shield to take all the blows that life will keep hitting you with. But some days I can’t even bring myself to move the laundry into the dryer, to make myself a cup of tea. I feel like inside me there’s a big knot, it’s heavy and sore and I can’t seem to unfasten it. It makes me so tired and so sad.

Tonight I resent my boyfriend. I resent him because when I look at him all I can see is everything that he isn't for me and everything he isn't giving or can't give me. I resent him because he won't change. I resent him because I feel like he is not making an effort. I resent him because he knows I am not happy but will not allow me to talk to him about it and will not engage to find a solution. I resent him because I know he knows I resent him and he watches TV instead of working through things. I resent him because this isn't what I signed up for. I resent him because I know I shouldn't resent him and shouldn't change him and so when I see him I know I am in the wrong for resenting him. I resent this night. Most of all I resent that I can't leave him because I love him and I also resent that I am questioning if that is enough.

This Morning - by Lee Harwood
this morning leaving you in a crowded street. heading off to start the late shift I just couldn't think. the pain of your leaving and my love for you as hopeless as ever my stupidity as ever thinking I could forget and re-arrange my memories while you were walking round happy in the afternoon sun and tonight warm in some bar or cinema or driving back home feeling good or maybe - like me - sad tired and scribbling it all down to make it feel like something had happened today.
This poem is beautfiul and reminds me so much of the intense feelings of sadness and hopelessness I used to get when my partner used to walk me to work and I would do a late shift in a job I absolutely hated. It captures my emotional state and feelings so well. And to think I came across this in a random book in a pile of old stage props when I worked at a theatre and kept for decoration in my apartment BEFORE I got said job.
Spotting and then avoiding my psychologist in Starbucks because he is out of context and interaction would be super awkward and I wouldn't know where to start 😕

Hey! Put the phone down for a while, in the night there is something wild
We live in a time where we are always with our mobile phones. I must admit I am one of them. However, when I go to a gig I pretty much leave my phone in my pocket/bag. I might take one photo because the stage looks amazing, but I don’t film anything and I certainly don’t watch the gig through my phone.

What is wrong with banning phones from gigs? I am all for this. I never used to use my phone when I started going to gigs. They didn’t have Facebook or Twitter and there were no data plans when I first had a mobile phone. What did we do then? We enjoyed making memories and not documenting them on Facebook. We didn’t need to prove to anyone that we were there, we went and we rocked and we came home and had amazing stories to tell that only really made any sense if you were there in the moment. This definitely stems from conversations with my dad, he slept on Brighton beach to get tickets to see The Who when he was a teenager and then i think the ticket was only £3. He went to seedy pubs to watch bands he loved, he listened to The Rolling Stones on Vinyl. He didn’t have a mobile phone, he lived in the moment and enjoyed the music. We rely on our phones to tell our friends that we are doing something better than them. I have stories like my dad, like the time I lost my shit to ‘Give it Away’ when I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I ran to see Green Day do a secret set at Reading Festival whilst drinking raspberry vodka and lemonade. I zoned out completely when watching Sigur Ros at the Roundhouse, I was completely sold by their performance and it took days to come out of the trance they put me in. I danced like i’ve never danced before to Foo Fighters. Did I need my mobile phone for any of that? No!
