Hello everyone :) I’m writing this post to share my Paul Simon concert ventures at Forest Hills Stadium from July 8-9th! I booked my trip to NYC for a week to experience this at his own home-town. It completely sold out so they released another show, which I was debating on going to (spoiler alert I did). It was my first time at this venue and I’m so glad I experience it with Paul! It seemed like security wasn’t as strict like the one I experienced at the Disney Hall, but it all depended on where you sat.

The first day, I sat in the nosebleeds but the sound was incredible! He came out in mint, summery clothes and said something along the lines of how long it’s been since he’s returned back home. The whole audience went wild and I felt like the claps went on for ages until he started Seven Psalms. From his energy and expression alone, I could tell he was really having a good time! The claps after each act felt like they were drawn out for a straight whole minute. It was so interesting seeing the excitement of the crowd and it shows by how it was a sold out night! This was also the leg of the tour where he introduced “America” into the setlist for the first time. Apparently, it wasn’t written in the physical setlist (according to setlist.fm). It was a really special surprise and I thought he would only play it in Forest Hills like he did with American Tune at the Hollywood Bowl but I guess he extended to other venues! What was especially magical was how the audience responded to any mention of New York in Paul’s songs. For example, the crowd went wild when he mentioned the girl from New York City from Graceland and 7th Avenue and the New York city winters from The Boxer. It was really wholesome to see everyone in union celebrating not only Paul, but what he was singing. I added a little clip of it so you can hear the enthusiasm of the audience! It’s really something special. He also said a silly remark when there was some sort of problem being resolved on stage. Describing it loosely, in his own words, “This is my home… I can do whatever I want!” SUCH A BRAT. I had cute aggression when he said that. Anyways, the first night was so memorable I got a ticket to the second night!

I got a ticket in the third row and the view was insane. It felt no different to a first row seat in my opinion. The people around me were a little bit more respectful than the ones from the first day. There was less people being boozed out but more people on their… phones? There was this one guy who was on his phone scrolling through Facebook and nobody stopped him. I genuinely thought security would be tighter upfront but it wasn’t. I also overheard some people behind me who haven’t even heard a single Paul Simon song and I just 😭🙏 Its okay to watch a concert to get to know an artist but my god do you need to be in the fourth row and take a seat away from a fan who maybe genuinely wanted to see him? It just feels kind of wrong. Anyways, the positives! When Paul came out, I was a bit unhinged jumping up and down. He looked in my direction and I was wearing a vintage Central Park shirt and he said, “… A familiar shirt.” I think I was gonna pass out. After intermission, he also looked in my direction and pointed at me. My eyes went kind of wide and I pointed back at myself and he nodded. I kind of died inside. I was quickly revived by the moving second act and it brought me to tears by the end of it. During encore, there was an open seat in the front row. I asked the lady in front of me if I could climb over and she told me I could. She also said that the other people in the front didn’t technically buy those seats either??? So during Me and Julio, I jumped over and started dancing along in the front. It was such a special treat! Probably confused the him and the band lol.

These dates were so important and completely reshaped my trip to NYC. While on this trip, I was filming some footage related to a video I’m gonna post real soon. It’s essentially landmarks related to S&G and the location’s influences. What was really special was when Paul talked about the places that inspired the songs and mentioned how they were “few blocks” or “down a few streets.” Compared to other shows like the ones I saw at the Disney Hall or the Bowl, he never really gave any contextual descriptors. I guess what made this whole experience even more special was the fact that I walked in his footsteps days before. I got to see the street where they smoked a joint in the car together, I got to see where he grew up and lived his whole life… I got to see his Highschool where they taught him nothing but crap! It moves me even writing this post because it’s such a personal feeling. I’m ecstatic to share all my footage soon nicely packaged in a YouTube video so… thats my big project for now. Ohhh this is the one he shares with Lorne Michaels where they have the connected elevator and a shared door in the kitchen! I visited it from the outside and it looks beautiful even in person. It’s such a nice location too… I really like the west side :)
