I am pleased to announce the publication of my 51st book, The Suicide Epidemic, from ReferencePoint Press. It was a difficult book to write, but I hold fast to the hope that it will find its way to at least one young adult who will benefit from it. From the publisher's catalog: The US suicide rate increased 33 percent from 1999 through 2017, and it is now the second-leading cause of death among those aged ten to thirty-four. This book explores the many causes of the epidemic and looks at the human toll it is taking on the roughly 1.5 million people who lose a close friend or family member to suicide each year.

I am pleased to announce the publication of my 46th book, "Genetic Testing and Research" in the Thinking Critically series from ReferencePoint Press. This was a toughie. The science was difficult, despite the fact that I had worked as a marketing consultant for Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI). But relating the science to the interests of a teenager was even more challenging. On top of that, each chapter in this series consist of two opposing and balanced viewpoints--a rhetorical challenge. Excellent short (16-minute) film introducing my long-time friend Dana Zinderman in a small but important role and starring her son Roger Carnow, who also helped write the screenplay. Well written and well acted all around.
Announcing the publication of my forty-third book, another in the Critical Thinking series on an important and controversial topic. It has already received its first review, which "dutifully" synopsizes each chapter: KIRKUS REVIEW This title examines types of gun violence in America and presents historical, cultural, legal, and political perspectives on the issue. The first chapter in this brief overview of a complex topic examines mass shootings as a uniquely American problem and how, in comparison to other industrialized nations, the United States is an outlier with disproportionate levels of other types of gun violence. In the second chapter, Steffens (Thinking Critically, 2018, etc.) discusses the reasons behind disparate gun laws on the state level and the resulting obstacles to creating or strengthening national gun laws. The latter subject is the focus of the third chapter, which goes into such issues as background checks, buyback programs, private sale loopholes, raising age limits, and organized opposition to such regulations by the National Rifle Association. The fourth and final chapter examines arguments made by gun advocates that arming more people is the best solution to curbing gun violence. Steffens cites numerous statistics and research findings and dutifully presents pro and con positions.
August 1 is the publication date for several of my titles. This one was difficult to write, but fulfilling, as I kept hoping it would connect to the one kid who needs it.
