Free evac cards are back!

Guess what's finally back! That's right, free evac cards. I have put them up on my Payhip as a pay-what-you-want product, including free. This will make it much easier for me to manage orders and anyone who wants to make donations to support the creation of these cards. Right now I have about 300 in stock, so lots to go around.

Evacuations are stressful and frequently sudden. In such situations it is easy to forget things, no matter how much you may have prepared beforehand. These cards are designed to live in your wallet and function as a quick reference guide and list of items to remember during an evacuation based on how much time you have.

I provide these cards for free as often as I can, so if you want to get them for free, you can do that! You get to pick the price, and $0 is a 100% acceptable answer. However, if you do chose to pay even $1, that money will go towards producing more free cards for others, envelopes, and stamps.

To make sure these cards are available to as many people as possible, please try to limit your order to ten cards at a time. @ahmed0khalil asked me to boost his family’s campaign with some art, so here it is !

The Khalil family is a family of eight, many of whom are children, including Ahmed who is only 6 and barely started school when they had to flee from bombings. They currently reside in a UN center among many other families, but medical and hygiene care and proper accommodations are extremely difficult to find and keep in these conditions.

This campaign is very far from their goal, so please share and support where you can.

Hypothetical scenario: You are at home and are suddenly told to evacuate. You are given a large van and five minutes to gather your belongings.

All other humans and animals are safe and don't need to be considered in this scenario (i.e. you don't need to catch your skittish cat or bring your lizard's terrarium), but nobody else can help you (you must gather and carry everything yourself).

Evacuate.

I'm breaking character to speak very seriously. If you're in Florida, do NOT ignore evacuation orders. If you have Floridian friends or family, tell THEM to get out too.

I'm begging you personally.

Back during Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall on the East Coast as a mere cyclone, my stupid ass did not evacuate. I watched it roll in, trapped on the upper floor by rising floodwaters. Vehicles became wrecking balls in the current. Pieces of houses were ripped clean off. The glass on the windows bent-- if the wind was any stronger, they might have shattered.

The storm outside painted the world pitch black. It was like nothing existed outside those bulging windows except rain and chaos. I could only hear the roar of the wind, interlaced by an irregular din of crunching, scraping, and crackling.

It was only when the surge subsided that I learned that those noises were the sounds of yachts and house boats that had been lifted out of the harbor. Unmanned on the current, they crashed into telephone poles, dug trenches in the roads, and ripped through the walls of houses as if they were cardboard. That could have been me.

It was one of the most terrifying ordeals of my life. I survived because I was lucky.

If you've been ordered to evacuate, get out NOW. If you're not scared of "a little rain," you will be terrified by the time it's too late. It will be because you're trapped by an inky black ocean of rising water, surrounded by broken glass and shrieking wind, your little island growing smaller and smaller until you're swallowed whole.

And, for the love of all that is good, IF you're trapped in that situation, DO NOT GO OUTSIDE. Stay where you are safe until you physically cannot. Treat the water with the same caution as if it is alive and wants to kill you.

Be well. Stay safe. Keep your loved ones assured of your wellbeing.

The rain has been intense and the Granite Falls have gotten even more exciting from it all!!! The area has been declared a natural disaster and they are evacuating entire towns and putting up flood walls. I-5 has been closed in some places. And it's supposed to rain for the next 10 days... so I'm documenting what all this rain is doing to the Granite Falls. I always look for the beauty in everything. There's a lot of major problems being caused by this rain, but the beauty in this is the Granite Falls!!! I'm going back next week to see what the additional rain will do to the river. It should be intense by then. It's pretty intense right now. The video doesn't do the river and the Falls justice, but it's close. It's so LOUD!! By next week, the water should be exploding over my head as I take the video... I can't wait!!! 😁😁😁

Kashechewan First Nation, along northern Ontario’s James Bay coast, plans to evacuate residents in the coming days because its water treatment system is in disrepair. Chief Hosea Wesley declared a state of local emergency on Sunday. The Cree First Nation has about 2,300 residents. "At this time, we cannot confirm when normal water production will resume," he said in a news release. "Our priority is the safety of our community members. We are taking every possible step to stabilize the situation and ensure access to safe drinking water."
