Ty Lee hummed, looking over at the other. A performer, an acrobat no less, of the upcoming show. In some ways, it was a bit like looking into a mirror, one that showed the past rather than the present but still. A smile danced on her lips as the other approached Ty Lee.

Her words came as a bit of a surprise but! Nothing she couldn’t go along with. She giggled, light and airy.

“I’d say so, yeah! The twists and turns in life can build someone’s aura up and up. Sometimes making them poofier or brighter—like yours!”

Bright and clear, like a sunny day. It was how she knew it’d be easy to get along with the other. Ty Lee glanced behind her and to where the show would happen. Maybe…

“Is it showtime? Ooo, I can’t wait to see what you’ll do!”

Aang stood quietly as his gray eyes lingered on his own hands, attention seemingly fixed somewhere much farther away. There was a thoughtful weight to him today, one that sat beneath his usual easy smile. When he finally looked up and met @braideddance's gaze, there was warmth in his expression, but also something undeniably sad.

"You know," he began softly, briefly looking back down at his hands, "the first time I saw you chi block someone, I thought it was incredible. Terrifying, but mostly incredible." A faint laugh escaped him. "I remember wondering how someone could stop a bender without bending at all. It didn't make any sense to me back then." His gaze drifted toward the horizon. "It makes more sense now." Aang was quiet again for a few seconds, the wind tugged gently at the edges of his robes, and for once he didn't immediately follow its invitation to move.

"The Air Nomads understood chi better than anyone. Airbending isn't just moving air around. It's energy flowing through your body and the world around you." His fingers curled slightly as he traced an invisible current only he could feel. "Some of the oldest teachings spoke about the pathways of chi and how disrupting them could affect a person's connection to their body.” His smile faded, becoming something smaller and more fragile.

"I've spent a lot of time rebuilding what was lost after the war. The temples, my people’s traditions and disciplines. I’m always uncovering some little piece of my people's history that I didn't know existed." He swallowed. "And every time I realize how much has disappeared with them." For a moment his voice threatened to falter with the aching grief he carried every day.

"So there's a strange irony in this." His eyes met hers again. "An ancient technique connected to my people... and I'm learning it from you." He let out a quiet breath through his nose. "I wonder which master might have taught me this if things had been different. What lessons they would have shared. What stories they would have told." Aang's shoulders eased as he spoke his thoughts aloud; there was grief in them, but acceptance too, he was getting better and giving his grief a voice.

"I’m glad it's you, though.” A genuine smile returned to his face, gentle and sincere. "You're patient when I overthink things. You don't make me feel foolish when I get something wrong. And somehow you've managed to turn getting jabbed in painful places into fun.” A quiet chuckle escaped him. "That's a pretty impressive skill. So... thank you, Ty Lee. Not just for teaching me how to chi block." His expression softened. "Thank you for helping me reconnect with a piece of my people that might have vanished forever. Even if it comes from a different path than the one I expected." The Avatar glanced down at his hands one last time before looking back up,

"Air Nomads believed that wisdom belongs to the world, not to any one nation. Maybe that's the lesson I'm supposed to learn here." His smile brightened slightly. "Either way, I'm grateful you're willing to teach me."

Finding Aang usually wasn’t too hard, approaching him usually wasn’t too hard, talking to him usually wasn’t too hard. Only one of those things was true today. Still, she wrung her hands together for a second. Maybe a moment. A breath. Today had to happen, for Aang’s sake, if not hers.

With the best smile she could muster, she walked up to the Avatar. There was this—his aura was different today. Leaning closer to blue than anything else. Still, there was that brightness there still. Even if dim, even if less poofier than usual. She was going to speak, maybe say something to lighten the mood (what could she really say though?), but he beat her to it. And, today, she was glad he did.

For the first time in a while, she froze in place, her smile remained but her posture… it was too stiff for someone as flexible as her. Still, she listened without interruption. His words carried weight, the kind that needed to be spoken. To be heard. To be—well, maybe not understood. That, in itself, was impossible. Something close to it though. Something like appreciated, maybe.

And again she was reminded why it did. Why it needed to be heard. That grief—the kind no one else could understand, the kind that remained an ache in your soul. For a second, his aura dimmed and with it did Ty Lee wring her hands together behind her back. There was no chance Ty Lee could teach him better than those that came before her. No chance that she could teach him better than the many mentors he would have learnt from. Mentors long gone because of her home’s previous Fire Lord.

In a lot of ways, it really did feel like the universe made a mistake here—choosing her and not…

She couldn’t let her thoughts cloud her too much, though. Not when he looked at her like that. Like he thought this was okay. It wasn’t, it really wasn’t, but he thought otherwise so… she needed to make sure it was as close to okay as possible. Her smile turned into something soft, genuine.

“… I’m glad I’m able to help after everything—I’m sure you’ll pick it up pretty easily! I mean, with your connection to the practice and your air bending. It’s all very swooshy, y’know? And that’s kind of the vibe for chi-blocking.”

Was she making sense? She hoped so. Alright, deep breaths, Ty Lee. Deep breaths.

“We can start by going over your knowledge of chi and work our way up from there! What do you remember learning about it?”

Zuko nodded. "Yeah, actually… I don't go to the zoo often. It's mostly for diplomatic visits and public appearances…. nothing casual."

The dragon let out a happy chirp as it began to trot ahead of them, clearly excited to be going on an adventure.

"Go ahead and lead the way then," he said with a small smile. He trusted Ty Lee's knowledge and anyway it was a way to remember the old times when they were children.

As they walked toward town center, he glanced at her from time to time: he hadn’t realized how much he had missed her cheerful presence until now.

A bouncy salute and she turned around in the direction of the zoo. “You got it! C’mon buddy—can I call you buddy?—let’s get you some friends.”

Her steps, while not as bouncy as when she was a kid, were still quite cheerful in nature. Something she couldn’t grow out of, she supposed. Not that she disliked it, no way! What was life without a bit of childish joy?

“When was the last time you went to visit the zoo? For fun, I mean, not like Fire Lord stuff.”

She tilted her head, turning right back around to face him. Walking backwards without issue.

Zuko felt a warmth spread through his chest at Ty Lee's words. She was willing to spend time with him and his troublesome dragon without expecting anything in return. For someone who had spent so much of his life feeling lonely, even as Fire Lord, this small act of kindness meant more than he could say.

"Thanks… really," he said quietly before clearing his throat. "I appreciate it."

Without another word, he turned toward the palace gates and gestured for her to follow. "Let's go then! We'll check around town first… The zoo can be a good place for find a potential friends."

The dragon start jumping, cant wait to go for a walk, flapping his big wings.

Giggling, she gave him a quick salute and turned around. Alright! Time to go on an animal hunt through town. “You got it! Want me to lead the way? Or do you already know where it is?”

He probably did but it didn’t hurt to check! Besides, she was pre~tty sure Ty Lee had been there way more times than Zuko had.

“I go there kinda often so I know all the quickest ways to get there! I know a lot of the animals too—some are friendlier than others so we’ll start with them first. Sound good?”

She looked to both Zuko and their dragon friend for their answers. It was no good if only one of them agreed, after all!

It had started off so, so, sooooo well! Near perfect, really! Ty Lee had finished up on her morning stretches and basic training to keep herself up in tip top shape! Wheeeen an idea sprung to mind. The perfect idea for a shining, just warm enough day!

The cloth had been laid on a particularly pretty field with some flowers dotted about. Not that Ty Lee had any idea what each flower was but they added to the nice, cozy vibes. She had just began eating her food when—

Boom! Thunder roared in the distance like the WORST of her father’s snores. Like the kind you’d hear just before a torrent of rainfall. She’d only barely managed to get up on a tree for shelter before any of her food could grow soggy and just all around ‘bleh’. Still, it wasn’t a long term solution. She just needed…

Ah-ha! My hero in the flesh!

“Hiya! Fancy seeing you out here. Mind lending me some shelter? Promise I’ll share some of my food if you do~, it’s super good!”

Well, this was certainly a sight to behold. Ty Lee—technically his enemy until not too long ago—being comforted by the Avatar himself. She couldn’t say she particularly minded it, though. How could she? Still, she found herself shaking her head.

“As much as I appreciate it, there are probably a lot of responsibilities you gotta do.”

Because he amounted to something. He was special from the start, someone who couldn’t be replaced. Part of a set but unique, every Avatar was unique while she was… ugh, this was so not the time. Her smile grew wobblier.

“I’m glad you’re here though. Really, I am… I mean—”

Even with all that being the case, it was hard to consider this time together as anything but enjoyable. Easy to bounce off of someone so similar to her, y’know? Comforting, almost.

“—you’re my friend, after all! So, if you really don’t have anything else to worry about… I’m happy you can worry about me.”

Zuko actually smiled at Ty Lee's enthusiastic suggestions. "Turtleducks are still around, yeah. But they're too slow and calm for this hyperactive dragon."

He rubbed his chin again, considering the idea of going on a search for a suitable friend.

"Honestly… I have to return and… sign some boring documents," he admitted with a tired sigh. "But… I can take an hour or two to go look for something."

The dragon perked up immediately at the mention of going out: its tail started wagging like an excited puppy.

Zuko shake his head but didn't protest. If it meant finding this dragon a playmate and solving half their problems… then sure!

"Are you willing to come with me? As long as it doesn't cause you any further inconvenience. I can compensate you for your time if you wish."

So turtleducks were a no-go buuuuut, it was nice knowing they were still around! She should go greet them sometime. Oh, but that was off topic! Back on track, Ty Lee, back on track.

She winced at his mention of documents. If they were boring even to Zuko, then they must be awful right down to the lettering. Since she couldn’t do anything against the documents themselves, she could at least offer him some comfort! In the form of a few pats on his shoulder with a somewhat solemn expression on her face.

“Hopefully, it’ll all be done quickly! I’ve gotta get back to training so I kinda get being on a time crunch but! Not to fear, I’ll be sticking with you.”

Once more, she found herself giggling at the dragon’s antics. He was so cute! She was almost tempted to pet him again but she needed to clear something up first.

“But! There’s nothing to compensate me for. I like spending time with my friends—which obviously includes you Zuko! So this is just an hour long hangout to me.”

Zuko nodded, a hint of hope in his eyes as he listened to her suggestion. "That sounds like a plan. Maybe if he has some friends to play with, he'll be too distracted to cause any trouble."

The dragon, who had rolled over on his belly and was lazily chewing on some grass, let out a rumble, seemingly agreeing with Ty Lee's idea.

Zuko gave a small chuckle at his dragon's response. "He seems to like the sound of it, at least. But I think is better search an animal one."

Grinning, Ty Lee nodded. With both the dragon and Zuko’s approval, she got to thinking up some friends for the little guy. Mm, probably needed someone his size, right? Or was he more interested in a smaller friend?

“Okay! Let’s start with what kinda animals he might like to play with. Are there still turtleducks in the palace? Maybe he could take a liking to them? But they wouldn’t really be able to rush around like he does… hm, hm! Oh, we could go on a bit of a hunt for an animal, couldn’t we?”

If Zuko had the time. Being the new Fire Lord had to be exhausting, right? And extremely busy so maybe he didn’t have the time for a search.

“Plus, if we’re at it for long enough, it might be like we’re the play dates soooo it could tire him out before any meetings!”

Zuko considered her words carefully, nodding slightly as he listened to her theory. "Actually, that… it makes some sense."

The dragon in question had settled down a little, now lazily rolling and stretching on the ground, listening attentively to the conversation.

He scratched his chin thoughtfully, considering their options. "But the problem is, he's so attached to me. He wants to constantly be with me when I am off of my duties. It's like he can't stand being alone. If only Drake was still alive… he could have an animal buddy."

He let out a small sigh, a mix of frustration and resignation in his voice.

Ohhh so that was it! Though the admission was super sad—and honestly, Ty Lee couldn’t help but give her new dragon buddy a consolation pat or ten—Ty Lee was understanding things some more.

“If he can’t stand being alone, then the answer’s simple! Let’s get him some new friends! You’d like that, wouldn’t you, dear? Want animal or human friends?”

She didn’t know very much animal friends (something she wanted to fix sooner rather than later), but! Human friends were more than easy to find.

“If we plan some play dates for him, it’ll be easy to get their energy low enough not to ruin any more rooms and stuff! I think.”

Zuko crossed his arms, thinking hard. "I've tried everything. Positive reinforcement like rewards after a good behavior, negative reinforcement like scolding, shouting, isolation… You name it."

He let out a humorless chuckle, gesturing at the dragon who was now rolling around on the ground, clearly bored. "But he's like a hyperactive kitten on a sugar rush. He'll learn for a few days, maybe even a week, and then he reverts back to his old energetic self. It's… exhausting. Maybe is time to let him fly to himself?"

She nodded along to his words. Hmmm, from the sounds of things… yeah, this sounded somewhat familiar. Maybe it really was a good thing he went to her for this—hopefully?

“Hm, hm! Okay, so, I’m thinking that maaaaaybe it’s less behaviour that he does or can unlearn and more like his personality? Like, uhm—you know when you try to dampen your personality traits, it can last a short while but never forever? It sounds kinda like that.”

It felt a little rambley but she hoped the message came across… kinda well? Agh, not the time for doubts, Ty Lee. She cleared her throat before continuing.

“Ahem. So, I think you might wanna find activities he can do on his own to, like, keep him away from destroying stuff? Flying sounds like a good start! … Does, uh, does all of that make sense?”

Zuko watched as Ty Lee continued to interact with the dragon, his expression a mixture of exasperation and resignation. But before he could say anything, she brought up the original reason for her visit.

He cleared his throat again, his voice more business-like. "Right, right, sorry. The reason was to find a way to calm down this energetic boy."

The dragon, meanwhile, let out a small huff of disappointment as if to say 'hey, don't go back to talking about boring stuff.'

Zuko shot the dragon a stern look. "Not now, you big goofball."

The dragon seemed to understand the disapproving tone and let out a huff, lying down lazily on the ground, still looking at Ty Lee expectantly.

Zuko shook his head, a small sigh escaping him. "As I was saying… the issue is his energy level. He's got endless amounts of it, and when he gets excited, he gets a bit… uncontrollable."

He ran a hand through his hair, frustration in his voice. "I've tried countless times to get him to understand that he can't just go around jumping, running, and destroying things whenever he feels like it."

Though things were getting back on track, Ty Lee couldn’t help the joy and giggliness she held. Especially when the dragon and Zuko were so cute together! But, but, but! She needed to focus. She nodded along, watching the dragon as he resisted the point of the matter.

“Got it, got it! What have you tried so far?”

Figuring out what to do next needed her to also not retread old ground. Probably. From the looks of things, her new dragon friend (??) probably wouldn’t enjoy doing the same old same old.

“Maybe we can see if there’s any patterns or something that we could use from your past attempts!”

Zuko had grabbed Ty Lee by the waist instinctively to prevent her from falling, keeping her steady. It was as if his body had moved without him thinking. Now that she was upright again, he quickly let go, feeling slightly embarrassed.

He cleared his throat, trying to mask his flustered state with a stern expression. "I'm fine, too. But seriously, he's clearly taken a liking to you."

The dragon, as if to emphasis the point, let out another, almost excited rumble, nudging its sharp snout against Ty Lee's side gently.

"Druk! Stop it!" Zuko said a little annoyed at having pushed her and tried to move his big muzzle away from her.

Now that she was on the ground, it was pretty easy to see Zuko’s embarrassment. But! They were friends! So no calling it out. For now, at least. Maaaaaybe later.

“You thi—ah! Uhm, okay, so I see your point.”

A giggle escaped her as she patted the dragon on the head. Hopefully that was respectful! If not, uhhh, plan hide behind Zuko was a go!

“It’s fine, really! I’m all prepped for it now. Though, we miiiight be getting a bit off topic, wanna go back to the why we’re here? All good if not, this is super fun actually!”

The dragon let out a pleased rumble, seemingly enjoying the unexpected pats. He leaned his head slightly into her touch, closing his eyes for a moment.

Zuko watched their interaction with a hint of amusement, surprised that the dragon seemed so taken with Ty Lee so quickly. "You know, he usually doesn't take to strangers that easily," he commented, crossing his arms.

The dragon responded with another small, almost purring sound, rubbing its head against Ty Lee's hand, clearly asking for more attention.

"I think you've just become his new favorite person. He's never like this with anyone but me." Zuko said with a smirk, not bothering to hide the slight amusement in his voice.

The dragon, meanwhile, had moved even closer to Ty Lee, pushing her towars Zuko and this, instinctively, made him move to prevent her from falling. "Are you ok?"

She giggled as the dragon accepted her head pats. Thank every star in the night sky… It would be so bad if he didn’t. “Well! Then, I guess we gotta make sure I don’t remain a stranger, huh?”

The jump from a ‘stranger he liked’ to ‘new favourite person’ was a pretty big one but Ty Lee wore it with pride. And joy. A bright smile on her face even as the dragon had… woah, what was he trying to do?

Letting out a small yelp, she was pushed toward Zuko. Lucky for her, he had pretty good reflexes (though, she could probably land on her two feet either way), and caught her before she could fall. Another set of giggles as she got up properly.

“Yep, just fine! How about you?”
