"Although" is actually kind of a crazy word if you think about it. Conjunction that means "both of these things are true, but we'd expect our readers to think the second part would be false in the case where the first part is true, and we want to call their attention to the fact that that ain't the case" and its a single word. Wild. Anyway
does anybody know any good synonyms for grinning I've written a character who grins too much and I can't keep overusing the word like this this is a disaster
I love it when authors visibly lose control of their characters and have to scramble to recover. Like my favorite scene in wuthering heights is when Emily Brontë gives Isabella a Gun just to see what happens, and within seconds flat Isabella goes "Wait a second I could just shoot the fucker" with zero angst and Emily has to scramble to have Earnshaw get the gun away from her before the story just ends right there
Babylon 5 spoilers below, though I've tried to lightly redact them
So you know how when Londo has [redacted] killed, he sends him a lil hologram letter to explain exactly why he's doing this and exactly how fucked [redacted] and everything he ever stood for is now going to be? The letter ends with Londo, in a brief aside, revealing what this is all really about:
"You have taken from me that which I loved. Goodbye, [redacted]."
Now, Londo is of course referring to the murder of [data expunged], but as we find out later, [redacted] didn't actually have anything to do with that. So he must have been pretty confused in his final moments, right? Well not necessarily. Because you see, [data expunged] wasn't the only person close to Londo whose death [redacted] was responsible for.
So basically Refa died thinking Londo was gay for Urza Jaddo
just gave one of my characters a terrible day and empathized with them so completely that I gave myself a headache

this is amazing and I'm glad I saw it
i do this when im writing fiction. Each fic has a cut document full of discarded dialogue, scene settings, metaphors etc that dont quite fit yet I might want to use down the line or other fics.
I think more novelists should release deleted scenes.
I just do all my writing in github to be honest
having a good day
Took a Europa vet to a hockey game one time. Can't even describe the stillness.
Reading about old Spanish treasure galleons and it's so funny.
"The ship's official name was "Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, dedicated to the glorious rule of his Most Catholic and Imperial Majesty Phillip II", but the crew seems mostly to have referred to her by the playful nickname "Hunk of Flaming Shit""
Honestly the funniest result in all of biology is that the mechanism by which beavers are motivated to beave is that they just fuckin hate the sound of running water. "Just shut up!" gone beyond being a whole personality into being a whole species.
Above all it just really irritates me to pretend as if the ruling class of the US-anglo empire in 2025 are a bunch of cool-headed capable materialists. Again, this is a fundamental misunderstanding of the process of the decline of empire. Part of how every empire declines is is that its ruling class becomes increasingly incestuous, keeping out talented people of humble backgrounds who might extend the Empire's lifespan and instead turning increasingly important posts within the imperial machine into sinecures for the incompetent progeny of the previous generations of managers of empire. And as the offices of imperial government are increasingly clogged with rich, incompetent sons of fortune, the governing barometer of the imperial administration gradually goes from being some form of pragmatic materialism into being hubristic adherence to the imperial ideology, in defiance to all evidence from reality.
Honestly what's described here is the specific illness that lowercase democracy is intended to solve - if real control of the imperial administration is tied to something outside itself, hopefully something that is itself tied to reality somehow, you can end up with a gravitational force constantly pulling things back realitywards. Of course, this only works as well as the connection between real power and the external thing, and the connection between the external thing and reality. Given that in a democracy the external thing is public opinion, well...
But there's really not a lot of other candidates for a thing external to the state, so *shrug emoji*. Nothing to be done but stiffen the connections.
I love Lyta's character arc. She spends most of the show as this metaphorically-chainsmoking neurotic cockroach of a woman trying to avoid being squashed underfoot by the vast powerful big stompy forces that surround her, and then one day she wakes up to discover that those forces are no longer in play. And it slowly dawns on her that she's the biggest, stompiest thing left on the chessboard. And even more slowly, it dawns on her that she *likes it*.
You know what? I'm going to say it. I'm pro witch-finding-her-cat-in-the-alps.
Disco Elysium created this wonderful format of having the protagonist's psyche modeled as a dialogue among richly written characters, and then having navigating that dialogue be like half the game, and then it used this format to tell a gritty social commentary. And now everyone is claiming that if you ever use this format to tell any other kind of story, you must have misunderstood the original, or wanted it sanitized, and you must be guilty of media illiteracy. C'mon. Guys. Live a little.
my friend in LA saw this in her DMs today and she was horrified but I can’t stop laughing this is like the most out of pocket rizz I’ve ever seen like whattt
Kabru, doing rapid math on a notepad: "So, for this next strech, we should expect to encounter goblins at a rate of 3.33 per mile - repeating, of course-"
Rin, running up, breathless with excitement: "That cave... it's full... of gold!"
Kabru: "Hm? Oh. I'm sure it's worth a great deal of money, but I - er, we - have other priorities right now. As I was saying-"
Rin: *furrows brows in anger, then smiles sweetly* "Oh, Kabru;" *tucks hair behind ear* "don't you think you're being a bit..." *steps closer* "...hasty?"
Kabru: "What?" *glances up* "Oh. Ahem," *puts notepad away* "Oh, Rin;" *stares at Rin with eyes that suddenly fill the whole screen* "Believe me," *puts hand on nape of neck*, "If I were willing to tolerate delays," *puts hand on small of back*, "You might find that I'd still have..." *gently leans her back* "... other priorities."
Rin: "Whawhwrglbllrgbgbgl"
Kabru: *drops her like Carrie Fisher in the Blues Brothers* "Which is why we won't be stopping. Come along, Rin." *takes off at brisk walk*
one of my side characters kept doing things I didn't expect so eventually I decided to look into their backstory to figure out what the fuck was going on and it turns out their backstory is more interesting than the actual story I was trying to tell help
