WELCOME TO BRAKEBILLS UNIVERSITY,   SCHOOL OF MAGIC

   Magicians are practitioners of magic, ordinary humans with special abilities that can accomplish the extraordinary with the right training.   In upstate New York, there is a graduate level school of magic known as Brakebills University.  Potential magicians are chosen to attend after careful analysis and testing.  Magicians are taught the rules of the magical community upon enrollment to this prestigious school.  

   Every magician will be drawn to a particular affinity of magic, called Disciplines.  Depending on the discipline of the magician, they will be grouped into a house at the academy under categories such as: Natural Magic, Illusion, Physical, Psychic, and Healing. Faculty at the university are charged with testing and determining the discipline of new students at the end of First Year, as well as teaching all young magicians how to best use their skills.

   When young magicians fail out, they are deprived of their memories of the magical world and returned to their ordinary life. It should be noted that what a magician does outside of class or beyond graduation, well, is hardly any of Brakebills’ concern.  With the recent attack on the school that injured a professor, the school has bigger fish to fry.

Growing up in Florida wasn’t all sunshine and tourists. Penny can’t remember a time he couldn’t hear voices. Knowing everyone’s thoughts, everyone’s opinions about you, it didn’t provide the easiest environment to grow up in. Penny spent a lot of time living on the streets. He learned to survive on his own; learned to wrap a cocky, asshole attitude around himself as a shield. If no one saw past it, he saw no reason to let them in. 

Over the years there was one voice that was clearer than any other. Most of the time voices were like bad radios. He could hear them but there tended to be a lot of static. This voice became like the father figure Penny never had. It taught him how to survive. It taught him magic. When he suddenly appeared on a sunny campus in upstate New York instead of the dreary part of the state he had been in, he wasn’t all that surprised. 

His main goal in attending Brakebills isn’t to learn more magic. He likes magic, but he wants to find a way to either block or get rid of his hated ability. Call him psychic and he’s likely to punch you.

HISTORY

Born the eldest son to Giuseppe and Lillian Salvatore, Damon’s sole purpose seemed to be for nothing but a constant reminder that he was nothing but a disappointment to his father. Why was Giuseppe so disappointed in Damon? Because he could sense magic in the boy’s veins. Magic ran through the Salvatore line, and Giuseppe wanted nothing but to have a normal life away from that hocus pocus. He was a military man and he was harsh on Damon because of his affinity towards magic. Ever since he was a child, Damon could be seen meditating in a forest grove, his soul one with the ebb and flow of the universe. He felt power within his grasp. Power, and happiness, that Giuseppe tried to squelch. When Stefan was born, Damon learned that he would sacrifice himself to protect those whom he loves. It was during one heated, violent, argument with Giuseppe that Damon first actually wield magic.

And that’s what basically brings us to now. Damon is a third year, his major in Physical magic with a strong pull towards healing. He would do anything to have a good time while doing everything he can for those he loves. He has a dark and passionate streak that runs through him and he constantly struggles not to become like his father. He is the charming, resident bad-boy with a heart made of pure gold that many do not (or cannot) get close enough to see. He has a hunger and thirst for all the knowledge Brakebill’s has to offer and is incredibly ambitious. On his free night’s you can find him bar-tending at the local bars and partying his ass off - all while hunting for a place where he feels he can belong.

NAME: Kai Parker AGE: 24 POSITION: Student YEAR: Year 3 MAGICAL DISCIPLINE:Natural Magic 2nd choice; Illusion FC: Chris Wood

Background:

Kai Parker has always been the black sheep of his family, and he never understood why he didn’t fit in. His magic is different than most of his families, as they are more disciplined in Illusion, while he is more disciplined in Nature. They disliked that he showed signs of being disciplined in a different form of magic, and shut him out. He realized at a young age, he could draw power from the earth around him; controlling the elements. He nearly caused a flood when he was 16, in a moment of teenage angst, causing his family to distance themselves from him more and more. 

He spent the next years outside a lot, perfecting his craft, and running away from home. When he got invited to Brakebills University, at first he thought he’d hate it, but quickly grew to finally feel at home.  He spent his first year in the dorms, like everyone else. He kept to himself mostly for the first year, as he figured himself, and his magic out, though he slowly came out of his shell, being around people like him, though he wonders how long it will last; feeling like he belongs.

He excelled at his exams, with little surprise to him. Magic was his everything; he didn’t have a lot of friends where he came from, and his family more or less hated him. He buried himself in the school, and in his studies as a distraction.  Now finding himself in his third year here. He’s researched the different disciplines, and even gone on to research different forms of magic as well.

Name: Jebediah “Jeb” Bennett

Age: 79

Class: Psychic Discipline, though he does some lectures on dual disciplines 

Family: Martin & Abigail Stevens (parents, deceased), Sheila Bennett (spouse), Emily Bennett (sister-in-law), Ayana Bennett (sister-in-law, deceased), Abigail “Abby” Bennett (daughter), Benjamin “Benji” Bennett (son), Bonnie Bennett (granddaughter), Lucy Bennett (granddaughter). (His family is bigger than this, this is just all I feel like listing.) 

Magic was in the Bennett and Stevens blood for generations, even if there was no educated refinement. Even if it was just sharpened like a tool through family grimoires before they were given a card–an invitation to Brakebills, a new graduate school in uptown New York for the magically gifted. He’d already gone through many struggles to get through college in 1956, despite the recent integration of schools. So once he got his bachelors in Education, he headed to Brakebills. Which is where he met Sheila Bennett, a beautiful young woman who was in the same year as him with an older sister named Ayana–who was in the psychic discipline. 

She all but played matchmaker between Sheila and Jeb and they dated throughout graduate school up until the very end where he asked her to marry him. She agreed and he ended up taking her surname after she said she didn’t want to change her name. Though it was a bit shocking to him at the time, he thought about it and decided that he would take her’s. His parents had a few issues with it and her parents just thought it was kind of funny. 

He continued to get his graduate degree and was personally trained by the former psychic professor so that he would take over for her when she retired. Even while he was a teacher, he continued to refine his powers and found that he suited a dual discipline–a little later than most would, but he was able to do it at his own pace. 

Extra Facts;; 

He’s become a bit of a staple of the school. Most people know who he is, even if it’s only in passing since he lets just about anyone into his offices after class whether it’s to talk about an assignment or just needing advice. Or if they just want to hear a really bad, really corny joke. He has a lot of those. Dad jokes are his forte. 

He has taken to ‘adopting’ students who come from abusive or absent families since he doesn’t really view anyone of the students there as fully an adult quite yet. He’s old enough to be at least everyone’s father, so he doesn’t mind playing a paternal role to them. This includes him inviting several, if not all, of these students to the Bennett family’s Thanksgiving. Which Sheila finds both irritating and endearing, more endearing because he actually does most of the Thanksgiving cooking while she makes sure the house is straightened up. 

He is much harder on Bonnie than he will be on other students purely because they are related and neither want to put nepotism into question. That and he knows what she’s capable of, so he will continue to push her harder. Even if he does spoil her when he can and is a bit protective. 

He has a lot of embarrassing stories about Elijah Mikaelson since he was one of Elijah’s professors while he was a student.

HISTORY

Born into a coven of highly renowned witches, Liv’s path to Brakebills was set the moment she was conceived. She was trained in highly advanced magic at an young age. Some even question whether she actually needed to attend Brakebills due to the vast amount of training she received at such a young age. 

When she was invited to take the exam, it was obvious that she would pass with flying colors. To Liv, Brakebills was more of an experience than anything. Her family’s skill with cloaking and illusion spells practically left her with Illusion House stamped across her forehead. 3 years into the school, she finds herself bored with the unchallenging curriculum. With nothing but time on her hands, she finds herself looking into more exciting, and dangerous, forms of magic.
