Hazel had been keeping watch over Emerald and Mercury since Cinder’s disappearance, despite the fact that the two young teammates might say they’ve been looking after themselves since then. As much as he was a follower of Salem, he was also a man with enough heart left to keep an eye out for some kids in over their heads. Hazel entered the room where Emerald had been known to train, and found her there.
“Emerald,” he greeted her with a gruff tone, “are you or the other boy hungry? Dinner is almost ready.”

Hazel breathed slowly, and lowered his gaze when Emerald apologized to him. When the girl asked what his sister was like, he glanced off to the left, good and bad memories flooding his senses.
"She was everything I wanted to be, but braver," he sighed, eyes searching to bookshelves for something to focus on. "She knew who she wanted to be from a very young age, and she fought tooth and nail to get through life for the sake of her wishes as well as the people she cared about. She was just a child, she didn't know the consequences that her actions might bring to light... but she ran off in hopes of becoming something bigger, something... something. She wanted to be someone."
Hazel shook his head and his voice grew dark. "She went off to become a huntress and Ozpin and his school got her killed. She was a child who got into something so much bigger than herself and she couldn't have known." He finally made eye contact with Emerald again, and anger shone in his eyes. "I don't want to watch the same thing happen to you."
When he changed the subject back to Cinder, he kept his gaze trained on Emerald while she spoke. He found it...peculiar that the girl considered Cinder to be family, when it was plainly obvious to him that, to Cinder, Emerald was a means to an end. He realized that Emerald's view had been clouded by her intense need to have a caring family in her life, and his heart felt heavy.
"I can't offer you what you saw in Cinder," he responded, shrugging a bit. "But I will take the reponsibility of keeping you and the boy safe if I can. You two deserved better lives than this."
