the near-absolute destruction of the sikh community of afghanistan is weighing on me heavily right now i feel so ill

there have been sikhs in afghanistan since guru nanak visited kabul in the 15th century and the durrani empire period. prior to the start of the afghan wars in the 1980s, between 200k-500k sikhs lived in afghanistan.

many fled to india starting in the 80s and heavily throughout the 90s. many of our gurdwaras were destroyed during the battle of jalalabad in 1989. under taliban rule, sikhs were persecuted and forced to pay the jizya tax. our tradition of cremation was banned and our cremation grounds were destroyed, and afghani sikhs were required to wear yellow patches or veils to identify themselves. as of 2013, only an estimated 8000 sikhs remained in afghanistan; that number dropped to 700 in 2020, and now in august 2021 there are only 200~ sikhs left in the country and all but a handful of them intend to seek asylum, leaving only a few sikhs left in a region that historically had as many as half a million of us.

the few staying behind are doing so to maintain our holy sites (historic gurdwaras mainly, including the site visited by guru nanak dev ji, the first sikh guru) with help from local muslim afghanis, who are providing protection and assistance against the taliban at great self-risk. the idea that muslims and sikhs have a relationship that is inherently hostile is false and paints an inaccurate picture that only serves to further us- and other imperialist and reactionary interests abroad and within the region. even against threat of great violence and decades of war our people come together in solidarity and with acknowledgment of our shared humanity and community. there is a lot to mourn about what is happening in afghanistan - what has happened, is happening, will happen - but there is still compassion and kindness to be found and shared.

my heart goes out to all afghanis who have suffered through these wars and faced destruction and displacement at the hands of those who seek to exploit and exterminate for the sake of empire and capital. god willing one day afghanistan will again be free from tyranny and all who have been displaced will have the opportunity - the choice - to return home, however that looks
