Production shots by Camilla Greenwell from our performance as part of Barbican Open Lab Showcase at RichMix, London, July 2015
Here are more performance shots from our residency & performance as part of Acts Re:Acts2 at Wimbledon College of Art in May this year. Really interesting discussion after our performance and great to keep developing ‘Trinity’
For this project we've been collaborating with sound artist Demetrio Castellucci. The sound develops alongside the design, almost in response to the designs coming to life in the space. The sound gives the forms a space to exist in, in the case of this, our new show, TRINITY, we are trying to create quite an epic, almost sacred space. We are hoping that, as the show develops, we could even give the forms a voice. One of the big questions we are interested in is, not only how these designs move in space, but also how to they sound, do they have a voice, and if they speak (or sing) want do they say?
One of the images we are fascinated by is that of the Virgin Mary, the Madonna, as portrayed in medieval and renaissance art. The scenes from the Pieta’ and the Ascension are particularly powerful. We’re also exploring the power of the veil through civilisation and how it expresses something about the female form. Photo credit Camilla Greenwell, Barbican Open Lab, March 2015.

Spring Development 2015
This year we have been working on our new piece, through residencies at the Barbican, Plateau Gallery in Berlin and Wimbledon College of Art as part of ACTS/REACTS Festival 2015.
TRINITY is a work-in-progress performance investigating the processes of transformation, iconification and transcendence, by looking at the ways in which the body has been masked, morphed, muted, ritualised, armoured, adorned, transformed, elevated, made “other”, through the centuries from medieval and renaissance art, fairy-tales and folklore, to science fiction and fashion. We are playing with the archetypes of the female form, from the fictional to the personal. We have been collaborating with sound artist Demetrio Castellucci to give the forms we’ve created an epic, sacred space to exist in.
This is the second project we have developed through Open Lab with the support of Barbican Creative Learning.
BRAVENEWWORLDS performance Utopia will be representing UK design for performance in Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (17 – 28 June 2015) and in Make:Believe exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (for 6 months from early July 2015) !

TINNITUS
The species exist in pairs. It is endemic to the mountains of the southern part of the Western Cape. Its status is not clear, it always was uncommon and persists largely in mountain reserves. It grows on sandstone off cliffs and near mountain tops where it has little competition from other species.
QUAZAR
Quasar is an active hunter with acute sensitivity. It shows signs of intelligence in its choice of planets. It hunts using tentacles to detect the prey mainly by sensing its vibrations. When picking up a planet it sticks it in the galactic nest situated on its back.
ICTUS VERDI
Semi vertebrate who lives in the undergrowth and is mainly only seen at dusk. Its green blades are highly accurate sensors that can detect sound waves as far as 1000 yards. The ictus verde emits a poisonous essence when under threat, a balm which in ancient times was believed to contain beneficial rejuvenating qualities.
PACATUS PENICULUS
A member of the religious order of women in service to the ‘great abyss’. Unlike our nuns these women are not ascetics who have chosen to leave main stream life but have been ‘born of the hole’ and spend their lives in service to the ‘abyss’. They live their days according to the Liturgy of the Hours. The constant movement of their hands indicates a form of prayer but is also believed to have a function, the purpose as yet unknown.
STELLA MONTEM
Initially believed to be land mass, today they are known to be a diverse group of single-celled microorganisms orbiting the Great Abyss. They are almost always unicellular, although some can aggregate into complex structures as part of their life cycle floating in clusters in a perpetual spiral.
