Varian's analysis for no reason.
Well. His dad doesn't really show affection, Varian doesn't have friends. Everybody thinks he's a failure, a weirdo, a problem. Varian’s arc is basically him craving validation from everyone, especially his loved ones. He tries to impress his dad, then to impress Cass, then he sings a song about him trying to make his dad proud of him. His whole villain arc is about him trying to make other people respect him and listen to him. Then, suddenly, he meets someone who is says he's impressed, he listens to him, he shows affection, he listens to him... Yeah, that's Andrew, he sees Varian's soft spot and manipulating him. It isn't like Varian has other choice... And he doesn't really want to find it. He's finally something for someone. He understands that he's doing bad things, but... He can't do anything about that. About himself. About his crave for some kind of validation. In season 3 he's a problem for everyone again. Everybody hates him, people who forgave him flinch at his every move. He feels really bad about it. He's trying to separate himself from others, basically putting himself in social jail. He's... trying everything to get rid off his villain arc and make people like him. But he can't. He doesn't fit in. He's lonely.
Vat7k is basically about him craving validation again. He's trying to make something great. He's trying to make friends. Like really. Without kidnapping and stuff. But even when he gets along with Yong, Nuru, his cousins and others, he doesn't feel really comfortable. There are two reasons.
Firstly, he isn't really the smartest one. He's personality was building on it. He tries to impress everyone with that. Now that isn't that cool. He feels like bullshit. That's why he's always arguing and competing with Hugo. He just can't let anyone being better, because he thinks no one will give a shit about him then.
Secondly, because they don't know real him. Because he was always nice and didn't tell anything about his past. He doesn't feel like they like him. That's why he fall for Hugo. Hugo isn't better, so Varian isn't scared of confessing his past to him. And he's right. Hugo understands him. They're very similar. He's finally feeling okay with someone.
Varian did know that it was coming for sure. He didn't believe that it could be so nice. He was ready for that. But then Hugo asking for forgiveness, confessing and stuff... That's what feeling off. He's forgiving him, because he's finally feeling loved despite everything.
Also Varian and Hugo are still rivals no matter what. Neither can let other be smarter, they're too fucked up for that. Varian craves for validation, affection and love from Hugo. Hugo still can't let himself to be loved and love back, because he's scared. So Varian makes him to do what to wants sometimes.
They're sick, but they are getting better. Well, I hope so.
