I think about this a lot.
I once worked at a firm with offices in multiple states and the in-house IT worked out of the main office in a state a time zone away. I had a laptop I was preparing for a new hire starting the next day and I couldn't get it to charge. It was plugged in, but the battery wouldn't charge. This was a Lenovo in 2015, so the battery was removable. I tried taking it out and putting it in again. I rebooted several times. I checked for any relevant updates. No luck.
I googled the problem. I knew a lot less about computers back then, but I knew enough to understand the search results telling me the next step was to uninstall the driver for the battery in case it's corrupt. Oh no, I thought, I needed admin privileges for that.
I got on the phone with IT. I explained to them the issue and everything I'd tried up to that point. I told them my theory and asked if they could just remote in and try uninstalling the driver for me please. And if that didn't work then it was in their hands, but I definitely needed a resolution by end of day.
Well. This simply would not do. Who did I think I was? Calling them up and just *asking* them to uninstall a driver! They would need to do their own troubleshooting before taking such a drastic step.
I calmly asked what they would do.
Well, they said. We... Well... We would...
Can we just try this, I asked. It'll take five minutes. And if it doesn't work, then I'm an idiot and you're in charge.
Fine, they said. I could tell they were unhappy with me.
They remoted in, uninstalled the driver, initiated a reboot and sat in resentful silence with me on the phone while we waited. Wouldn't you know, when the laptop booted up, it started charging right away?
I humored them while they remoted in a second time to satisfy themselves that the issue was, in fact, resolved. Then, I thanked them profusely and cheerfully, all sickly sweetness, wished them a good day, and hung up.
Basically all of this is to say that sometimes the only difference between you and your IT helper is they have the admin password.
