Finding a job is hard. Finding a teaching job is even harder, especially when you live in rural northern Maine. This is my journey through the dreaded job hunt: too many applications, lots of interviews, and hopefully landing that full-time teaching job.

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. How To Take Cornell Notes

While there are many ways to take notes, Cornell Notes are among the most useful for pure academic study, but they’re also a bit complicated. Simpler forms like combination notes are easy to explain and use, but lack the depth a form like the Cornell System has.

I also teach a K/W/L  chart method, and it rarely sticks. 

(Three columns + 1 of notes on a reading:  What do you know from the reading?  What do you want to know [questions you have] What did you learn? [answers to those questions + further info gleaned from class discussion.)

I love them too, and I feel like I spend a lot of time at the beginning of 7th grade teaching “how to take notes”. The 5th/6th team doesn’t have students take their own notes in any way, something I have expressed concern about. It becomes of the foundational units at the start of the year for my team. Here’s the thing though, note taking is SO personal. I like Cornell Notes as a base because there is built in organization.

For the beginning of 7th History, I assign the summary at the bottom as homework. It’s the only homework expectation for about 3 weeks, as I try to instill the habit of consistently looking over notes. By the time the kids are in 8th History (I have them back to back years for this), they can take notes in whatever manner works for them. About half stay with Cornell, and I see big difference long term with those who do. Yes, it requires a little extra effort, but I definitely feel like it pays off.

Any tips for students just starting their independent note taking?

We use a school - wide system of Cornell notes. We teach and reteach it obsessively. The students become very proficient because we do it in every class.

A few strategies that are used: - Directed questions from instructors before reading or an activity - Student questions that they must answer post activity - Stop and jot - Making setting up their Cornell notes a competition. - It also helps to set up PowerPoint or SmartNotebook slides like their notebooks to guide them with where to put things.

Just as kids are not one-size-fits-all, neither are teachers. Some teachers will inspire some of us. Other teachers will leave us cold. And there’s not a lot of rhyme or reason there. It’s like falling in love. Someone can look great for you on paper, but in real life, you just don’t click.

Would you discourage a current junior in high school from becoming a teacher? Or do you feel the benefits outweigh the negatives for a person who would like to teach?

I would discourage everyone from becoming a teacher. 

NO WAIT!! Hear me out… this job is thankless. No, really. The money is obviously not there, and I’m not even talking about lavish trips or even a trip down to the movie theater, I mean you will literally be living from paycheck to paycheck, if that. The educational system itself is ruthless and at this point probably even more savage than politics. The one thing that makes it all worthwhile is seeing your students succeed… but that won’t happen every day, every week, or every month. If they do though…. it’ll probably be years down the road and you may or may not know about it. Are there beautiful moments in the classroom? Absolutely. Do I enjoy teaching? Yes. Would I break my back for my students? I do. Every day. Even when they cuss me out, when they talk over me, when they sleep through class, when they just… won’t. But I would NEVER, EVER, EVER encourage anyone to be a teacher. Because the kind of person that has the strength, conviction, ambition, intellect, and passion needed to be a teacher…a great teacher… CANNOT be the kind of person that needs encouragement to do the job. It needs to be the kind of person that is ridiculously INSANE and maniacally ANGERED about the current state of our youth that they will do whatever is necessary to change their life…. despite people telling them to NEVER, EVER, EVER be a  teacher.

The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals—sounds that say listen to this, it is important.
