I wonder if people are a lot like nails. At first they have stability, structure, and protection from the hammer hitting them head on. Eventually you have to pull your fingers back and let them go on their own or you'll end up breaking your thumb and forefinger in the process. Then, it's up to the hammer and all it takes is one inexperienced blow to bend the nail. You can straighten it out again and it'll end up doing its job, but it's never the same and the nail is never perfect again. For every easy, perfect nail there are ten bent and crooked nails. Heartbreakingly enough, sometimes the hammer ends up just ruining a nail and you have to pull it out backward, mangled, unusable, and finally, discarded. I wonder if those are caused by a fundamental flaw in the nail or simply the way the hammer is wielded.
