Anywhere I would have followed you.
"What happened to your face?"
“It’s fine, I just——
“I got into a little bit of trouble, okay?
“Nothing I can’t handle by myself.”
"You sure?" Nick looked at her worriedly.
"Broken nose-- i think.
"Had one before." She offers a somewhat lopsided smile.
"Couple of times, actually.
I'm making a habit of it."
I AM STRONGER THAN THIS! I say, to m y s e l f as I try not to break a p a r t

|REACTION MEME| Bruised and Broken Version
"Woah, when did you get that?"
"Who did this to you?"
"How many time have I told you to be more careful?"
"You’re saying this was an accident?"
"What a shiner!"
"If you look like this, I’d hate to see the other guy."
"I’m not buying it, you don’t walk into a door and get a bruise like that!"
"Does it hurt when I touch it?"
"Let me kiss it better."
"If you don’t rest, you won’t heal."
"Another fight?"
"What happened to your face?"
"I don’t think your arm is meant to bend like that…"
"Let’s get you to bed."
"Let’s get you to the hospital."
"Why are you so calm about this?"
"You’re bleeding!"
"What are friends for, ey?"
"So, instead of helping you, they ran off the moment they saw what was happening?"
"You need to look where you’re going."
"I’m not accusing anyone, I’m just saying it looks suspicious."
"Do you want to tell me what really happened?"
"Don’t move! You’ll faint!"
"I’ve got some bandages, wait a sec."
"You’re the clumsiest person I know."
"I won’t let you be on your own, not when you’re like this."
"How could you be so careless?"
"I can’t even look at you, you promised not to get into any more fights!"
"H-how many of them were there?"
“No, a walker got it.”
Maybe it wasn’t as great a story as he thought.
"Oh." A slight smile tugs at her lips; she studies his footwear with some amount of humour.
"Why'd you let that happen?"
“So…you might be wondering why I have two different shoes on.”
Oh yes, everyone’s got to hear this.
"------You wanted to start a new trend?"
He didn’t like it here. He didn’t like anything about it. Didn’t like the way it smelt. Didn’t like the way it looked. Didn’t like the way it felt. There was nothing that would keep him in this place – positively nothing, not even a little girl seemingly on her own with no real people to turn to.
Dammit.
”Its not Wonderland either. This place shouldn’t even exist.”
He hadn’t meant it the way it had sounded, a grimace on his face as an uncomfortable feeling tugged at his stomach. Dark eyes looked toward her, the girl who had seemed to have more life in her than anyone he had ever seen in such circumstances.
”Is there a reason you are still here? If you were given a way out – would you take it?”
There was a very good reason why the Hare was asking such a thing. There were different rules where he had come from. The Hare’s brow arched, his dark eyes watching intently as she strapped the rifle back on her back and reached for a pistol from her back pocket – at least the girl was resourceful.
”David’s? - - so you aren’t alone out here then”
Or perhaps Sean had just misunderstood….
And then she stated the obvious.
”No shit, kid - -”
He couldn’t help but to chuckle as she introduced him to the place. America. Colorado. A realm of flesh eating cannibals it had seemed. Great. Last place he certainly had wished to be.
”What did you say your name was again?”
He was even sure she had told him, he couldn’t quite recall right at that moment as he shifted his weight and leaned back just enough to card his finger-less gloved hand through his hair.
”Look, why don’t you come with me then? I’ll take you out of this place to somewhere you might actually have a chance to keep on surviving”
"Well...," Ellie watches him in silence for a moment, one that might indeed be longer than what is necessary. She doesn't care, mind. It's his fault for appearing from nowhere, "It does exist. Has done for a while now. Best to just deal with it."
She squints, and chews the inside of her cheek as she considers the alternative-- and such a subject fascinates her so. A world without this mess; just like the past. With television and magazines, shopping malls and telephones. Bright lights. Freedom. Sounds like a dream to her. It always has. Ellie often wonders about the world her mother grew up in; the world Joel grew up in. How much had it changed them before they----
The stranger's question draws her so violently from her thoughts, and Ellie must blink in order to clear her head as best as she can. Her mouth opens, but she can muster no real reply.
For she's needed here. Unlike anyone else Ellie might actually be needed in this broken world. The wound on her arm reminds her of that much each time she rolls up her sleeve. There's a chance; if she finds Joel, if they find the road. The Fireflies...
"...No?"
There is hesitation, uncertainty. For, of course, she'd run-- run as far away as her legs could take her if she could, if there was even one moment that offered her a chance. It'd be selfish, but it would be hard not to. The world doesn't throw anyone a bone anymore. Such luck -any luck- is so incredibly rare that she'd jump at the chance. But she's needed, or so she's told. And the world's future is more important than her happiness is. She shakes her head slowly, still hesitant, repeats herself quietly--
"No."
Ellie takes a step backward, a defiant and somewhat worried look in her eye. His name is enough to set her on edge, to make her fists curl so very tightly at her sides. Ellie releases a short breath, does her best to calm herself down, "I'm not with David. He's a piece of shit.
"Williams. It's my last name.
"And it's all you're getting at the moment."
"Your logic is foggy. You need to stay away from all that. Survival is key silly girl."
She had a good point. Didn’t mean he was going to acknowledge the fact that he was just bested by a teenage smart ass.
"My logic's just fine.
"Admit it. I win."
"There's only a little bit of shame in it."
Ellie casts her glance back down to the magazine, and flicks through a few more pages. A humoured scoff leaves her lips every now and then, but she soon becomes a tad bored.
"Y'know what? Once you seen one, you've kind of seen them all. Huh."
Only one more glance is spared before James turns and begins to walk. His footsteps are deft across the soft ground, generating what he hopes is the least amount of noise. Now that there seems to be a tenuous peace between them, he doesn’t say much, devoting more energy on simply getting to a more secure location before night falls.
He wonders if she’ll try anything on him with his back turned, though if his assumptions about her are correct, she’s more fearful of him than anything, and won’t commit an act of aggression unless provoked. He doesn’t doubt she’s capable of more ferocity than her her slight frame would indicate, and the thought actually makes him smile in something approaching pride.
”You seen much of them stupid fuckers out here?” He hasn’t been in this particular area very long, though those damn dead things walking around could be just about anywhere at any time.
Ellie follows behind at a steady pace, her gaze somewhat fixed on the back of his head. She takes a moment, watches his gait; quiet against the ground. Ellie herself occasionally slips, but she likes to think she's quiet enough-- she has yet to die, anyway. Stealth is key.
"There's not a lot, not out this far. You get closer to the town, though, and closer to the highway-- you've gotta watch your watch your back."
"There are a few wanderers every now and then, but...
"It's the people you've gotta worry about."
Chancing a brief glance up above them, Ellie takes note of the colour of the sky. The little things seem more important to her-- now she's alone; now she's living on -even more- borrowed time. The sun will set soon, and they'll be surrounded by darkness. She guesses their best bet will likely be the hut, to stay there for the night. Ellie isn't expecting Joel to be there; she never really expects him to be anywhere anymore, but there's something that keeps her close to this place. And it's something she can't explain. To anyone, not even herself.
"Jheeze----"
"It's really coming down out there."
She's trying to make conversation.
It might not really work.
Psst, I'll no longer be doing greeters-- it's my fault, I didn't keep up after hitting fifty. Sorry, people. Don't be worried about hitting me up if you'd like a random-ass starter or if you'd like to plot, though.
I'll also be posting opens and stuff, so, yeah.
