the funny thing is that from an political and artistic point of view the james cameron avatar franchise is actually significantly better than the nickelodeon avatar franchise

from a political perspective, both feature unresearched orientalist facsimile mashups of existing nonwhite cultures, but only the blue people movies take the explicit stance that engaging in anticolonial warfare and ecoterrorism against an invading settler colonial force and its imperialist extractivism is epic and righteous and justified, whereas the cartoon spends most of the first show being wishy washy and clutching pearls about revolutionary violence and then spends most of the next show caricaturing various left-wing ideologies and continuing to wag the finger at revolutionary violence

from an artistic perspective, the production of the blue people movies pioneered and developed genuinely revolutionary cgi/vfx techniques and underwater film techniques, the former in particular influencing the filmmaking industry to a massive degree, whereas the cartoons, uh, idk, showed western millennials that magic kung fu is cool? i genuinely can't think of anything legitimately artistically impressive abt the cartoon, the fight choreography isn't even very good compared to many examples of the wuxia and battle anime it's so heavily inspired by

lastly, from a reception perspective, while both media are very popular, it's rather difficult to find [ostensibly or actually] left-wing fans who are uncritical of the avatar movies. the dominant opinion seems to be that the films are a racist trainwreck in terms of their portrayals of native ppl, which is a much better basis for actually talking abt the content than the cartoon's inescapable reputation as some kind of diverse masterpiece. from this perspective, the ubiquitous crowing about how atla's impact and cultural presence (maybe for you!) eclipse's avatar's becomes hilariously ironic. i regret to inform you that your thing also sucks balls
