Chicago. I had never been to Chicago before today, and if the circumstances were different, I would’ve loved to go. Today, however, I was here on business.
As the plane car whirred to a stop I hopped out the front, checking to make sure my knife was still in my pocket. After confirming it was, I walked over to the back, pulling out the meter from my pocket to remind myself of the lack-of-a-threat Marvin is.
“Threat Level E. We’re in a good place.”
I looked out onto the city, smiling.
“We’re coming for you, Magic Boy.”
I walked a little bit down the street, before looking back.
“You coming, Brie?”
As I carefully looked around for any suspicious activity, I confidently reply back “Let’s get this show on the road V. ” I lightly smile back.
As I finish checking off the list of weapons I have with me, crossbow? Check. Knife? Check. Mace? Check. Cards for Marvin to play with? Check. “Alright since you said this is a good level area, I’ll just bring my knife and the cards as well as mace for extra protection.”
I take the rest of the weapons back to the car and lock it up for now. “Ok so do we have any possible hints as to where he could be since this is like a needle in a haystack type of situation?”
“I already had a drone scouting the area. He was spotted in the Grand Crossing district. It’s not far from where I parked.”
I started walking down the slope, realizing it was a highway exit-ramp.
“We’re at the north end of the district. It goes from here south to 79th, and a couple more blocks east and west. We shouldn’t have to split up in case our glitch bitch friend shows up.”
Looking up at the street signs, I got a glimpse of the area. We were at 66th and “S Wabash,” whatever that meant.
“Let’s find us a magician.”
“Okay good idea. Lets roll out.” Gripping the cards in hand knowing that everything is going to be okay.
I follow behind and not even 5 seconds later, I trip on a piece of rock on the ground before getting back up right away. “I swear I’ve done this before.” I chuckle to myself before feeling my face heat up from embarrassment.
I quickly brush myself off and continue on. “I wonder if we’ll stumble across some puppets in disguise here.”
“You never know. Anyone here could be one of them. I told you that police officers in my hometown were puppets, right?”
I looked out at the slight expanse in front of us.
“Remember to look out for the red bands or marks that reveal themselves.”
“yea.” I stare down at the ground then look back up. “I’m so sorry that happened to you. I’ll be glad when we find the cure so that no more people will have to suffer from the giggles anymore. That glitch bitch will get what’s coming to him.”
Out before me I see two puppets with red bands on them. I hurry and grab my partner and whisper “hey I spot two on our 3:00. We gotta hide so they don’t catch us.” as we hide somewhere safe, I suggested “Why don’t we watch and see what they do?
“Sure. Maybe we’ll catch our MagicBoy while we’re at it.”
I kept a glimpse on the pair as they started walking back north, heading outside of the district.
“Okay, that’s a little off-course. Nothing a pair of Overnight Watch girls can’t handle, right?”
I cracked a smile at this. Leave it to me to try and make a joke in the heat of the moment.
“Right!” I whisper shout then look back at the puppets and observe them closely, they seem to mostly talk and constantly look over their backs as if they’re being watched from far, far, away.
I chuckle as I think to myself, “If these fuckers at that paranoid, they’ve got another thing coming.” I keep watch of them as I start to feel the curiosity getting the better of me. I continue to walk ahead and get closer to them while keeping my distance.
With my two knives in hand to protect myself, I get behind another cover and wave behind me to let my partner know it’s safe to keep moving forward.
I quickly snuck further forward after seeing your wave, pulling a throwing knife out of my pocket, just in case.
I whisper shout at my partner. “They’re turning. Headed east. Probably trying a diversion.”
Paranoid fucks, I think to myself. Puppets can’t simply divert us that easily.
I smirk at my own little humor, preparing for every possible scenario, looking at the sides of buildings in case I have to climb a fire escape again.
“Sounds Like something stereotypical villains would do. I chuckle then watch them keep looking over their backs again and again.
As I break out the binoculars to get a better view, it makes me beg the toughest question I had to ask. “Well, this can go one of three ways, either we keep following them until they completely stop in their tracks, go the way we know where magicboy is, or climb this fire escape up to the roof and get a better view of everything, that way we can map out the fastest routes to find him. It’s your call V. What do you think we should do?”
I hold a deck of cards tightly in my belt loop while reminding myself, “Marvin, wherever you are, we will find you and bring you home. Safely.” I hold back the tears and anger that are welling up inside me.
“Well, personally, getting a good height difference between us and them will help in case they spot us.”
I choose not to say, In the event I have to stab any of them, I would prefer jumping down from the roof to do so.
I backtrack slightly, to the fire escape on the previous building, starting to climb rather quickly, and when I reach the top, I motion to you to climb up.
“Good idea.” I follow behind. “I’m coming.” I speed walk to the fire escape while noticing some rocks near the ladder. Thinking in my head, “maybe these will be useful.” I grab a small handful and begin to climb quickly without sounding our presence.
I poke my head first then proceed to climb the rest of the way up.
I said to my partner, “Wow what a view. Certainly makes you feel powerful at such a high ground.” I take out my binoculars again to scout the area to see the great ends of the city.
“Yeah. Overlooking the whole city and learning of all of the important parts was one of my favorite bits of Assassin’s Creed.” It was a lovely afternoon. The city beneath us speckled with life continued to move, oblivious to the war going on around them.
And it wouldn’t be long before this city got a taste of it.
“Seems our puppets are turning around. It was a diversion after all.”
I started to look down at the sidewalk below, starting to build up a bit of momentum to start roof hopping. “Try to keep up.”
“Good judgement on the idea of taking the roof.” I take several steps back then take a leap of faith to catch up to my partner.
Keeping a steady beat of roof hopping, I leap with my right foot then land with my left. Right. Left. Again and again. This is getting more intense as I feel a sense of adrenaline flowing through me. This actually feels fun and thrilling.
I keep this up until I see my partner stopping me and make me almost fall on the spot. Makes me wonder why we’re stopping all of a sudden. My heart is beating a million miles an hour and my legs feel like they’re on fire as my lungs move up and down at a very quick rate.
“I can see it from here.”
The trap that they laid out was pretty simple in design, but had one simple flaw. Throwing knives.
“See that rope, across the street and a few more buildings down? If we cut it now, it’ll trigger the trap the puppets tried to lay for us. If I time it right, we’ll trap the pair instead.”
I looked down the street, seeing a couple more puppets headed in the other direction, as if they planned this. Shit.
“On my signal, jump down. You should be roughly three buildings over. Please for the love of god try to land on top of one of them so they can break your fall.”
“Alright I’ll be waiting.” I run over to the next buildings I’m assigned at.
I wait patiently for the signal until it’s clear to jump. Making sure not a single second is wasted. “ This is very crucial for us.” talking to myself. I sometimes forget to blink because of how focused I am. These puppets will truly get what they deserve.
This signal could make or break us as long as we trust our instincts and each other. I quickly see a puppet starting to walk below me unknown of my location I wave to my partner letting her know they’re right under me. I can hardly hold back the screams as they come closer and closer. “Please let out the signal now. They’re right here. Do it! ” thinking in my head almost saying it out loud because of how much I wanna fuck them up.
Watching my partner continue to roof hop, I begin to wonder if I’m making the right move.
“It’s got to work,” I say to myself. I watch as the puppets inch closer to her.
“Any second now.” Instincts won’t be enough for the both of us. We’re outnumbered five to two.
Time to even the odds. I throw the knife, climbing down and shouting at the pair walking away from me. “HEY PUPPET FUCKERS!!”
The pair turn around. The makeshift cage starts to drop on the advancing three. You know what to do, Brie.
I see some of the puppets get stuck in the cage as I make my move. “Alright let’s do this.” I take aim with my pistol and shoot one of the puppets in the head, slowing them down and fall on the spot. I shoot again at the other puppet twice in the stomach and chest slowing them down to a crawl and cry in agony. Seconds later I see them stop moving blood pouring out at a fast rate.
I take pride in myself as I hear them both in agony, “Now that’s music to my ears.” I smile and laugh at the same time.
The time for self pride was short lived as I see the rest of the puppets try to get out of the cage. I then jump down and run to the cage then making a bold move by getting close and macing the puppets in the face. Watching them scream and clutch their faces tightly and seeing tears and a little blood come out of their eyes. Dropping down to the ground like flies, temporarily making them unconscious.
“Glad this little concoction of mace I made worked.” I set it back in my belt loop. And see my partner walk over towards me investigating the puppets and the shot ones too.
“Holy shit Brie. I am honestly surprised. Let’s turn back. Maybe we’ll still find our magician after all.”
I feel my phone vibrating in my pocket. Probably a notification from Twitter or Doll sending me something about a cat. Maybe Eliza, wondering where we had run off. I left it be as I started turning around.
“Reinforce the cage somehow. The puppet master will see we’re no one to mess with.”
I motion for my partner to follow. “Come along. We have a magician to find.”
I start to reinforce and strengthen the cage so that the puppets don’t get out so easily.
I speed walk up to my partner and notice them looking at something and ask politely, “What was that?” I hope I didn’t sound rude.
As we keep walking along, I start to feel the suble pain in my ankle from earlier when I tripped like a fucking idiot but I don’t make it obvious. I can’t let my partner worry about me. We need to worry finding magicboy more than me. He’s more important than anything else…
I follow the trail back south, noticing a wand on the ground, in an alleyway.
“Wand.” I answer the question and walk toward the alley, not acknowledging the barely noticable limp my partner now attains.
I’m not sure if this is our magician’s wand or not. But it’s a sign we’re back on the right track. I pick up the wand, just to hold on to it until we find our magicboy.
I gasp at the realization of the markings on the wand. "those markings share the similarities like the ones on Marvin's mask!" we're getting much closer to him than we thought.
Suddenly the wand starts glowing as if it's alive again then it begins to move in my partner's hand. "Woah! It's like it's trying to go back to its owner." I then see my partner speed walk with it trying to keep up with it.
"This will definitely show us where he is." I speed walk along making sure we don't lose the wand. This is our only lead but we have to make sure we don't get caught up with anymore puppets.

"Alright let's do this." I take aim with my pistol and shoot one of the puppets in the head, slowing them down and fall on the spot. I shoot again at the other puppet twice in the stomach and chest slowing them down to a crawl and cry in agony. Seconds later I see them stop moving blood pouring out at a fast rate.
I take pride in myself as I hear them both in agony, "Now that's music to my ears." I smile and laugh at the same time.
"Glad this little concoction of mace I made worked." I set it back in my belt loop. And see my partner walk over towards me investigating the puppets and the shot ones too.

"Right!" I whisper shout then look back at the puppets and observe them closely, they seem to mostly talk and constantly look over their backs as if they're being watched from far, far, away.
I chuckle as I think to myself, "If these fuckers at that paranoid, they've got another thing coming." I keep watch of them as I start to feel the curiosity getting the better of me. I continue to walk ahead and get closer to them while keeping my distance.
With my two knives in hand to protect myself, I get behind another cover and wave behind me to let my partner know it's safe to keep moving forward.
If you have a cat please reblog this with its name please and thank you
