i turned 30 this year and it felt like nothing.

then i went on a road trip to alaska with my sibling and it felt like everything.

i came back and the enormity of the time i've wasted has descended upon me like a plague of locusts, eating every bit of me left exposed. every decision in my life, from where i live to where i go to school to where i work to whether or not i leave this goddamn town i hate and never picked for myself.... all of these are decisions i let other people make for me.

i finished school. i went back and did it. so why am i still sitting here afraid to take the next step, back at that job i took out of necessity and never left out of fear?

sometimes neither of you are the bad guy. sometimes both of you are. sometimes what's good for you diverges, and there's no way forward but away.

I turned 31 this year and when I look back at this post I am disgusted with myself. I blamed other people for my decision to follow others and not pursue the things I wanted to do. I festered in resentment instead of pushing myself when I had a partner who loved me and supported my dreams. I decided to stay and work as hard as I could, despite the exhaustion, despite hating my job and the town we lived in, because I loved him and he needed me. and he was sick.

I should have respected myself for that decision. I should have accepted how sick he was, instead of keeping it in the back of my mind and wondering why I was working so hard and pretending like I didn't know what we were preparing for.

my almost-husband died and I regret every time I ever felt trapped. suddenly all of the problems that plagued our life (money, health, safety, stagnation, boredom, fear) are gone. I have more money than I need, the freedom to go and do whatever I want, and I want none of it. I want my problems back. I want the hardship back.

I want him back.

what am I supposed to do now.
