Was sick and rereading @amarguerite ‘s wonderful figure skating AU of Pride and Prejudice. This is a dumb thing to draw fanart for, as it is no longer available online, but the heart wants what the heart wants. You can read the Persuasion AU sequel, though.
i never considered myself my cat’s “mom”. i never wanted to be anyone’s mom. but what am i then? his master? creepy! his human? sounds weird. his roommate? he doesn’t pay rent or do his share of chores! in the end i think i’ve settled on bandmate.
I think it’s typically a pretty classic patron-client relationship as in Ancient Rome!
there’s a local guy called the Sidewalk Astronomer who sets up outside the clubs downtown with a giant telescope and lets the drunk people walking by look at the stars. he’s my hero and he let me see the moon and Jupiter today
Absolutely love how emotionally aware my child is for a 4 and a half year old do not however love stubbing my toe on the island for the 100th time today and hearing "hey mama it's okay to cry! It's not okay to throw a fit though, and we hafta re-...we have to reconitize the difference"
When I immediately say "oh no thanks" to a food she offers me she says "oh mommy, chefs try new foods. Can you take one , two, bites for me and if you really don't like it then I won't ask forever again deal?"
like you know what fine sure I'll try your truly heinous concoction because I do in fact hafta respect the deals
I’m reading this book about the changing arctic and the author stayed with the Nunamiut people of inland alaska for a while and talked to this high school kid who was like “ugh I hate going to school in the spring I wish I was hunting caribou” and I thought that was charming. you often hear about people who are devoted to preserving their traditional culture and knowledge but it’s rare to hear about someone who’s invested in the old ways out of pure teenage selfishness. school is lame and hunting caribou is awesome
this is helpful to getting started on anything regardless of what you call it (from this post)

You might feel some really weird pressure, like your abdomen is a purse and I lost my keys in there. That means your baby is almost here.
Please don't pull your catheter out there's a balloon in there.
Thank you for barfing in the trash/your emesis bag.
Push where you feel all that pressure, don't worry about me, that's what the [birthing stool/end of the bed/seat by the tub/pillow I chucked on the floor] is for

The passage of the seasons - Spring defeating Winter
Inspired by a short story in which Spring is embodied by a bring who faces winter and demands every living thing to awaken and fight to conquer a place on earth
Why is it easier and more comfortable to sit in a position that actively damages my joints than it is to just sit with okay posture. Why does my body crave its own destruction
The Ruin, Anonymous Old English Poem, trans R.M. Liuzza
This is an interesting poem that is thought to describe an observer looking around the Roman ruins in the city of Bath.
Something that’s quite interesting is that the poem - an artifact over 1000 years old - depicts puzzled nostalgia and wonder for even older artifacts, making history seem collapsed and intimate. This strongly influenced Tolkien - and you can pick up some specific places where! (The original Anglo-Saxon narrator states “brosnað enta geweorc,” translated here as “the work of giants is in ruins.” The giants were the Romans; today we spot the word “Ents”, and know what Tolkien was thinking.)
Bath, a prosperous city in the southwest of England, is home to natural hot springs - the only British city with natural ones. Prior to Roman colonisation around AD 60, the city was held by a Celtic tribe who honoured the local goddess Sulis; the Romans, who believed in cultural colonisation, combined her aspects with Minerva to create the hybrid goddess Sulis Minerva. The hot springs were pounced on as an attractive seed for Rome’s famous infrastructure, and the Roman city flourished. As a children’s fantasy novel published in 1906 puts it:
The young man looked astonished for a moment. 'Aquae Solis,' he repeated. 'The best baths in Britain. just as good, I'm told, as Rome. All the old gluttons sit in hot water, and talk scandal and politics. And the Generals come through the streets with their guards behind them; and the magistrates come in their chairs with their stiff guards behind them; and you meet fortune-tellers, and goldsmiths, and merchants, and philosophers, and feather-sellers, and ultra-Roman Britons, and ultra-British Romans, and tame tribesmen pretending to be civilised, and Jew lecturers, and—oh, everybody interesting.”
— Puck of Pook's Hill by Rudyard Kipling
But in 410 AD, only a few hundred years later, Rome withdrew from Britain - and their city fell into ruins, as described in the poem.
Today, the poem itself is in ruins; the work of giants punched through with lacunae. Today, you cannot swim in the Roman Baths - they’re a bloody ancient historical monument, why would you - but you can swim as mystically as you like in the spring next door.

oh also!! happy 40th anniversary to this film because Holy Shit
arranged political marriage narratives are for me similarly fraught to unplanned pregnancy in that they tend to skew towards a conservative, anti-choice sentiment regardless of the author's intentions or ideology, because the end goal is typically the realisation of an apparently empowering and subversive romantic fantasy where the characters involved experience compellingly turbulent and sexually charged conflict between normative expectations and their own desires, but ultimately find themselves fulfilled in and even healed by the acceptance of undeniably important and worthwhile but conventional (and oppressively gendered) roles like that of the loving husband and wife or parental figures. which is a shame because i Do think that there's some interesting and worthwhile commentary to be explored through these kinds of kinky fantasies that reflect the anxieties surrounding very real and enduring sociopolitical issues regarding autonomy and consent, but when that tension is ultimately resolved by settling into a role that's always been what's expected of you, even if it does allow you to manipulate certain social power dynamics in your favour, it just rings kind of hollow. all of which is a very long-winded way of saying that i wish there were more arranged marriage narratives where the participants never fall in love, but still come to care for and respect one another, and perform the marital duties expected of them out of that affection and desire to both help each other advance their sociopolitical countermoves to subvert the status quo and to survive, using the legal and social trappings that come with their marital status to their advantage to protect each other.
like i really Cannot stress enough how imperative it is that they never feel anything like romantic love for one another - nor are they really friends, although they may like each other's company and even actively prefer it to anyone else's. rather their relationship is comparable to that of two people covering each other's backs in a fight, or two prisoners in the same cell, and there's as much of the beauty of human connection to that as there is tragedy that these are the circumstances that brought them together. and they can absolutely have sexual tension and even consummate a sexual relationship and enjoy it, but it will be unavoidably dubiously consensual at best by design. no flinching from it.
new mychart message! aw damn....doc says my reality and existence lab work was wayyy off so she's referring me to an Ontologist
Literally the main civilizational achievement of the Romans is being the first to build what we might consider a State in the Western world. Everything else is just them loving autocracy and slavery and eating endangered species.
It's pretty great that this dude also thinks the Romans all lived in colonnaded temples and not what were essentially 5-over-ones (with strict height limits imposed for safety).
LITERALLY
What we really need to bring back are Roman communal toilets. I think it would fix the loneliness epidemic
