tom feels briefly pressured to warn wambsgans about his own experience (and thus, resistance) with liars. but the point of their conversation shifts easily into something lighter -- bullets buoyant enough to rise to a surface. he takes the seat in question, posture albeit still slack, still stubbornly reluctant to appear at all interested in the surrounding goings on. so it's strange and unlikely, but wambsgans' murmurings come like a ripple of solace. he will take bitter comments about appetizers and finger foods over lavish poetry of building-a-brand and the works of fascist politicians. tom pinches his lips together in response, bemused and even a little apologetic that his evening's been equally shoddy. "i think i was shark-tank'd about five times already. lots of rising businesses in need of a sponsor," he muses, restless fingers occasionally strumming against the seam of his right-side pant pocket. all prior systems, once set to auto-pilot, resume manually with each melted, waxy drip of sarcasm. "polite society tells me i'm just a very under-dressed banker. -- which is why toughing it out doesn't sound worthwhile."
tom can't find it within himself to be all doom and gloom, able to mutter a few morbid jokes even when facing the possibility of prison. besides, he knows that hobbes' has suffered a loss too recently and they've both got big shoes to fill. although for him at least, logan was a surrogate father. hobbes' remarks about being shark tanked startle a hearty laugh out of him, prominent laugh lines appearing near his baby blues. "boy, they're barking up the wrong tree. no offense, but you don't strike me as the mark cuban type," tom tells him, a small smile growing on his lips as the other tom's following comments support his mark cuban argument. it's something other than the surface-level narcissism that he feels drawn to the other tom, deeper than just sharing the same given name and social class as him, but he can't figure out what it is yet. he absent-mindedly rubs at the tan line of where his wedding band used to sit. "i hear you loud and clear. i've been told uh, i have a very 'agricultural' walk. you were born here, yes? so why don't we blow this popsicle stand and have some real fucking food?"

it sounds ridiculous to remark on, especially when the cringiness of what's greg saying makes his lips curl into a sneer, but he'd been the only one to perceive greg as a threat right off the bat. new kid coming in to put the squeeze on the family he'd already been cultivating a symbiotic relationship with, and he'd felt the re-introduction of greg would upset an already fragile ecosystem. greg had been like an invasive species. now? corporate partner in crime-doers. it's hard to put a label on what greg is to him. chewtoy just about sums it up, though. "feeling particularly zesty this morning, are we, greg?" in the past, he would've thought there wasn't a conspiring nor bad bone in greg's body. but there are cases where he loves to be proved wrong. "what is it, lassie? you wanna shove timmy down a well?" he prods, smile lines appearing before the genuine humor does in a show of pearly whites. hard to say who timmy is, in this scenario. it could be any of the kids.

one of my fave things about tom is how verbose and articulate he is, particularly when he's insulting someone "ludicrously capacious bag" and more -- but when someone really hurts him he struggles to convey that hurt. he keeps it as straightforward and clearcut as possible. like in the tomshiv beach scene. "i wonder if the sad i'd be without you, would be less than the sad i get from being with you." (still verbose, but he struggles to get it all out. verklempt.) and he struggles again, in the tomgreg saferoom scene. "this is, not a good feeling you're making me feel, greg." "yeah. i'm feeling .. i'm just feeling, a little bit, you know?"
