there's a small moment before you're rescued from the prison where i think vriden gerr gives up. you get put in a cell after being ripped away from your home and a month of imprisonment by sea and watching your best friend die horribly and before that your mentor bleed out in front of you and your foundational worldview that maybe comprise was possible has been shattered and you failed to protect yourself or your friends or your home on the same day that was meant to be your induction into a true guardian of your clan.

we're shown throughout the prologue that vriden gerr is used to being the levelheaded one between them and nílan. people turn to you as the leader and make frequent little jokes about nílan's temper and impulsivity and his unwillingness to communicate or compromise with the colonizers of teer fradee. even if you do have to resolve situations violently, it's after you've considered your other options and warned him off acting irrationally. both of you judge each other: he tells you to your face that you forget your obligations to your home; you think his anger is immature and naive.

but it's the thing that saves both of you! when you sit in the cell and stare off into the distance, he sees that you're slipping away and catches your eye and says if they think they can do this to us than they have never been initiated as sages of teer fradee and it's encouraging and furious and a reminder of what you just signed up for together -- what you've been competing against each other for your whole lives. he's telling you not to give up, but also that you're not allowed to give up, because you have already made your oath -- and more than that, if you give up, then all the ways that he's criticized you since you were children together are true, and he knows you, and he knows you won't let him claim that victory. it's this perfect little moment that crystallizes why vriden gerr can't survive intact without him. he's your friend and your annoying sibling no one asked for and maybe your lover but before all that he is the person holding you accountable to everything you wanted to be. just like you do to him. i love good writing!

i do think that spiders does a really good job of writing companions that you as the main character have history with. most games don’t even try but kurt and constantin and nílan all feel very real… i 100% believe nílan has been my frenemy since we were kids and that we spend all our time together as apprentices and that we annoy the fuck out of each other. great writing choice

this has been sitting in my files for a while now! It´s Ravishan from Ginn Hale`s Rifter Series - probably one of my absolute favourite book series ever (and seriously so so underrated!)
