Throwback Thursday! Class 42 Warship (unit D868 Zephyr) on the South Western Main Line near Pirbright, Surrey in 1970, hauling the 10.10 Exeter St Davids to London Waterloo service. The diesel-hydraulic locomotives were based on the Deutsche Bundesbahn loco V200, with the Warships adapted for the smaller British loading gauge.

Throwback Thursday! Class 251 or 261 “Blue Pullman” DMU near Oldfield Park station in Bath, North East Somerset. In service from 1960-1973 on the Western Region of British Rail, the units were introduced to compete with automobile use and the fledgling domestic air travel market. Although the units were mechanically and economically unviable, they provided the inspiration for the iconic InterCity 125 sets introduced in 1975.

The four-car trains are mechanically similar to the Class 319 units used by Thameslink and Northern Rail, but have the cabs of the Networker series.

Throwback Thursday! Class 71 (unit 71009) electric locomotive standing at Victoria station in autumn 1977. The units were distinct from other Southern Region electric locomotives in that they were only able to operate on 3rd rail DC electrified lines, in contrast to diesel-electric Class 73s and 74s.

Throwback Thursday! Class 87 (unit 87020) electric locomotive in British Rail blue hauling a rake of Mark 2 coaches near Carlisle. These units, along with the similar Class 86s, formed the bulk of long distance services along the West Coast Main Line from the mid-70s onwards until replaced by Pendolino tilting EMUs in the 2000s.

<b><u>Throwback Thursday!</u></b> Class 120 DMU at Inverness with a service to Aberdeen in 1970. 7 three-car sets were built for the Scottish Region of British Rail in February 1959, with some units in use as late as 1989 on Edinburgh to North Berwick services.

<b><u>Throwback Thursday!</u></b> Class 416 (2EPB) EMU in British Rail blue/grey livery near Fulwell Depot in south west London in April 1986. At the time even the youngest units had still been in service for 30 years, and it would be another 9 before the units were completely retired from the British rail network.
