If you are ever at a loss for creating color combinations or color schemes, look no further than Adobe’s site to customize color schemes. It even has some nice little shortcuts to making color schemes based on color theory!!!

These are some tips for drawing the nose. The triangles help constructing, the shading comes after. Look for Istebrak’s youtube tutorial if you want to follow the process.

Noses!!! This is a great, simple way to break down the nose into it’s simplest form before drawing it as a more detailed face piece. You can play with the shapes, angles, and proportion of the triangles to make all different kinds of noses. You can even branch out to other polygons to diversify your nose portfolio.

Here is a big old folder of multiple people making ALL KINDS OF FACES. I want to note that because the people having their photos taken are forcing theirselves to make certain faces, and this changes how the muscles in certain places work (especially in the eyes). Be aware of that, but still use these as some inspiration for all kinds of fun facial expresions and the possibilities of the face to emote.

This is definitely met to be a poster, but it has a great variety of shoe styles and shapes. Some are labeled by their style, some are labeled by their brand, so while it’s not a perfect dictionary, it’s a nice reference piece.

I wanna talk about an unfortunate thing I think the internet has done for art. With the instant gratification of instant delivery, we’ve seen an accelerated desire to discuss, be satisfied and move on from it. The result is a lot of contact like this: people who write to me directly - immediately - asking for an explanation of my work.

There’s a lot of collected thought that goes into art. Experience, meditation, desire. And any artist worth a damn has more than 1 thought to express on any given page. Certainly it’s possible an artist has nothing to say and just wants to shock or confuse you - and you’re welcome to think that about me or anyone you’d like - but even then, I believe there’s something to unearth from it. Why did the artist make those decisions? Did they achieve what they set out to do? What feeling does it give you? If you walk away and come back days or months or years later, do you interpret it any differently?

While some material is easier to enjoy at face value than others, good art will always offer more below the surface. This is a beautiful thing we do as humans. We warp reality to get to the bottom of it. We say things through music and the canvas and the written word that can’t be communicated any other way. We produce images and sounds simply because they’ve never been seen or heard. We make sense of life by comparing it to the art of the past. And then we die, hopefully offering something of value to future humans.

Art gives us things we don’t expect. And it’s a shame that we have the impulse to categorize those things immediately, denying ourselves that bit of discovery. Scott Pilgrim didn’t explode onto the scene as a new version of its many influences. It could only have been made by one person, with their particular skillset and worldview, at a crucial moment in time.

I love Mer’s thoughtful words here. Not every parcelled fragment offered of a body of work needs to show all of its colours, reasons, and message, though it’s tempting to want those things sometimes.  Maybe you are rewarded with a definitive opinion for a day, but you are robbed of building a larger picture, theirs and yours.  The internet reassembled many of the ways we look at art, but if you’re making it, the way that you wish to say what you want to say still matters.

It’s the Trans Day of Visibility, and (coincidentally) the last day of Trans Comics Month, and I wanted to make a post about it.

My name is Sfé, and I am a trans (and queer) person who makes trans (and queer) comics.  I create the weekly webcomic Eth’s Skin, an all-queer-cast story about a trans, nonbinary fisher (named Eth) who accidentally-on-purpose steals the seal skin of a selkie and has to fix it.  I am also the creator and one of the editors of Beyond: The Queer Sci-Fi & Fantasy Comic Anthology.  I’m pretty single-mindedly focused on creating trans and queer content, and talking about the importance of trans and queer voices sharing trans and queer stories.

My identity is trans masculine-of-centre genderqueer, with eh/they/he pronouns.  I began medically transitioning when I started taking T in 2014 (and subsequently made this mini about it) which was an incredibly long-time coming, but I have no regrets.  

I haven’t been around much lately, and that’s because I’ve been preparing for (and am now recovering from) top surgery, which I had (exactly) two weeks ago.  It was the single most difficult thing I have ever done, I still can’t use my arms as much as I want to, but I am the most affirmed and comfortable/confident/at peace with myself I’ve ever been. (This is also why I’m not including a selfie in this post.  I look like….. a recovering mess, at the moment.)

Being trans is a huge part of who I am.  It’s a core part of my identity– it’s also (for better or for worse) a big part of my career and who I am in comics.  I’m happy and I’m proud to be who I am, exactly the way that I am, and wouldn’t change it for anything.  Days like today are important, and highlight how important we are.  And how strong, and how cool, and how (on our own terms) visible we have the ability to be. 

I hope- in whatever form or shape it takes- you have a strong Trans Day of Visibility.

Dear students,

I wanted to show you this for a few reasons...

Look how many different styles and genres this artists uses for his comics! Not only has Sfé created an interesting collection in his current works, but he has the space for his voice to be important and heard in these comics, and he can share that with you. This is one thing I love about webcomics - we have access to these voices that we may normally never get to hear, and there are so many of them if you look hard enough. Luckily for you younger folk, the longer you live and see these voices emerge, the more they pave the way for similar voices to follow in their paths. Hopefully you will be able to list to me over a hundred trans cartoonists with beautiful work when you come back to visit during college breaks.

Sfé uses his perspective and experience to drive his comics. His identity is fully incorporated in all of these, whether they are literally about him or stories that explore themes close to his heart and creates characters that reflect the kind of person he is and others across the gender spectrum. No matter if you can directly relate to his experiences (in gender identity or otherwise), make sure you’re putting yourselves into your comics. Your heart and soul and identity and voice will give your comics life, texture, and substance. Give it that life, and allow yourself to be fully you when creating your words and worlds.

This is a great way to exercise using references as a way of practicing drawing different face types without creating them off the top of your head. When you do these, also focus on the basic shape of the head and where the features are and are like - that will help you develop a base of features and head shapes to play with later.
