Brittany Susan Pierce was born Brittany Susan Reynolds, her mother, originally Whitney Reynolds, gave birth to her when she was only seventeen years old and her boyfriend, not ready for the responsibility that having a child would bring, decided that he wanted no part of the little family that was blossoming. He was too young, and let’s face it, not equipped to give Whitney the commitment she needed in order to raise her child with him.

Thus, she did it on her own for awhile, giving birth to Brittany on her grandmother’s farm in Indiana, where she stayed while she was hiding the fact that she was pregnant from everyone back home in Lima. It wasn’t that she was ashamed, but her grandmother couldn’t bear the idea of her granddaughter walking the halls pregnant and getting blatant stares. She insisted that Whitney spend at least the months she was showing with her.

When Brittany was still too small to have even her very first memory, and Whitney was back home in Lima, a single mother repeating her senior year of high school, Whitney was busier than ever and boys were the last thing on her mind, but she ended up meeting a new boy who had an eccentric family that matched her own and a personality to match. Funnily enough, he had two first names - or was it last names? Pierce Pierce. He was kind to her, not the smartest guy in the world, but when he asked her out, she couldn’t help saying yes.

Whitney continued to see him for Brittany’s first years of life, and eventually, it became evident that he was The One. When they eventually got married after years of dating, Brittany was nearly seven years old and regarded Pierce as her father. Therefore, when they became a family, Whitney not only became Whitney Pierce, but she made Brittany, Brittany Pierce. Pierce treated Brittany as his own from day one, and never looked back.

As she grew up, Brittany showed an active imagination, an innocence that her parents encouraged, she shined like the sun with her golden hair and her thousand watt smile. She found a love of dance as she got older, her mother putting her in classes when she realized how much Brittany desired to learn the craft, and later, in elementary school, she discovered cheerleading. Brittany loved everything about it. She loved the glitter, the high ponytails, the swishy skirts, and working as a team. She would continue to cheer for years to come.

In middle school, as always, Brittany went off to cheer camp just as she always had. However, this time was different: they’d be trusted to go into the great outdoors, sleeping in individual tents as a special trip to take a break from all of the basket tosses. Brittany was excited at this prospect, as she was excited by most things at fourteen, but as night fell, and a male cheer friend of hers climbed into her tent, she became confused.

Her mother had always described sex as something magical that happened between two people who were in love - she hadn’t felt that she needed to elaborate more than this. This boy had been flirting with her all summer, so maybe he loved her, right? When he climbed into her tent, she thought they’d just talk, maybe they’d have their first kiss, but the boy seemed to want more. Brittany, not knowing that she had a choice, let him do what he wanted, thinking that he was going to make her experience magic. Of course, all she felt was awkward, embarrassed, and grossed out. After this was over, he climbed out of her tent and she didn’t speak to him again, but she would spend the next few years having sex in order to erase this lackluster first experience. To this day, she hasn’t truly grasped that this wasn’t just a bad first time - it was a rape.

To protect herself from the trauma of that event, Brittany has more or less retreated into fantasy. She has held onto her childlike innocence with white knuckles, maintaining her belief in Santa Claus, good luck charms, and never stepping on cracks - she would never want to break Whitney’s back.

Now a senior in high school, Brittany wants to make this her year. She wants glee club to win all of the trophies - though she doesn’t know exactly why they’ve only ever gotten the smallest one, she wants the Cheerios to not get yelled at by Sue as much, and she wants to be Class President, a voice for the voiceless and a symbol of anti bullying.

However, she’s going to have to figure out how to leave the choir room first.

Character Development

Canon Integration:

TW: SEXUAL ASSAULT. 

In season 3, Brittany describes the first time she has sex in a disconcerting way. The way I’ve always interpreted this is that there was a chance that Brittany’s “alien invasion” at cheer camp might have been sexual assault. I feel like it’s important to explore that possibility because I rarely see it done, and I promise to do it sensitively and with great care. Always tagged, as well.

Like in canon, Pierce Pierce will not be her real father, but UNLIKE in canon, her father is not going to be Stephen Hawking as I feel like that’s too outrageous even for Brittany. I’m going to bring some realism into that plot and hopefully I do a good job. 

Brittany is going to have a close bond with her fellow cheerios (maybe some, but not all - depending on what existing characters want with her) and begin to view the glee club as her family. I’ve always been intrigued by how Brittany really loved everyone in the club at the end of all of the craziness and I definitely want to keep that in tact.

I’m going to have her run for Senior Class President, so that should be interesting. 

Plans for Development

I want Brittany to little by little see that she’s a lot smarter than she thinks she is / everyone else thinks she is. The “believing in her own magic” arc of season 3 is something i want to channel. 

Brittany is going to explore relationships with women, whatever kind of relationships those may be, and start to examine the idea that her bisexuality is more than just occasionally liking “sweet lady kisses” but that she’s open to the possibility of falling in love with a woman.

I want her to start to advocate for people who don’t have a voice and I think that if she wins as class president, or even if she doesn’t, she’ll try and give a voice to the voiceless. The kids who get walked all over and treated like they don’t matter. I want her to do MORE than what she did in canon and turn her into more of a well rounded individual. She’s more than just one liners.
