When love is genuine and real, it sticks with you during your time of need. How beautiful is that? No matter how ugly and terrifying a situation turns out to be the power of love always provides us with comfort. As a teenager onto my early 20s, I always singled out love as being some type of magic between two strangers who became lovers. I always overlooked, and perhaps took for granted, the love between family, friends, and community. It never seemed as magical or romantic to me, and this is probably because of all the crap that Disney and society feed me as a child -- who knows; but I believe now that I am older, my eyes see love from a totally new view -- and it’s beautiful!  The 2016 Olympics begins today so my social media feeds have been flooded with Olympic everything. I took the time to watch this short video clip about Derek Redmond’s story, and it brought me to tears because I realized I witnessed true love between a son and his father.

I kept thinking, “wow, look at how fast his father came to his side,” and to see his father comfort him in front of millions of people at the Olympics!! The moment Derek realized his father was at his side, he allowed himself to breakdown and become vulnerable because he knew he was safe. That is a powerful thing that we possess as humans. It was amazing to see how his outside demeanor changed from being “tough” to vulnerable once he knew he was in safe hands. The other thing that made me even more emotional was seeing how protective his father became by pushing away others who came to probably stop his son for finishing the race. This happened 24 years ago, but today I needed to see it as a reminder to me that love comes in all different ways. It comes in different forms and when it is sincere, real & genuine, it’s a powerful thing.

Misplaced Thought

Today I was skimming through some of my older Pinterest pins, and I came across quite a couple of pins that I remember pinning when I was still with him. A rush of all my feelings came back to me, and hit me where it hurts the most. I had to take a deep breath and let it go. Even though they were very sweet and precious memories, which I hold oh so close to my heart, I felt a jolt of strength when I gently reminded myself that I was in a stronger place, and that it is okay to let go. It hasn’t been easy by any means, but I’m doing it slowly but surely. I’m surviving and I am healing. BTB

When it rains...

It’s raining. I love it when it rains, many people do. We all have our own reasons for our love affair with the rain. With me, it started with its scent. I can’t even describe the intimacy of the rain’s scent. I can’t find the words perfect enough to describe how refreshing, nurturing, comforting and sensual it makes me feel. I can never get enough, ever.   The soft and sometimes hard sound of the rain puts me in a place where I always want to escape. I never want to come back. It’s a sound I could never live without.  The way it feels on my skin, it reminds me I’m alive. I’m reminded to breathe easier and deeper. I use to run through it, away from it, with the intention of avoiding its touch, its caress. I stopped running for shelter when my heart was broken, when I could feel nothing. I stood in the rain to feel. I felt life. My heart was broken, I was was broken, but I felt my heart beat with every raindrop that kissed my skin.  The rain poured hard and plenty. I stared out the window thinking of ways to avoid the touch of the rain. I remember pieces of that moment. It is one of my favorite moments. He met me at the door, umbrella in hand. He protected me from the rain. His sentiment was genuine. This was how he loved me. I loved him more than I loved the rain because he made me feel alive. I felt my heart beat with every touch and every kiss from him.  When it rains, I fall in love. I think it reminds me of him.

Brittany the Bookworm

                                                           Nine months ago the only thing I'd been reading were Facebook posts. It's funny how I've discovered a newfound appreciation for reading. I think some of the blame can be placed on my sisters who are total bookworms. It's okay though. I don't mind this attribute rubbing off on me. I've missed reading for fun honestly. 

So maybe I'm reading for fun, but the material I've been reading has mostly been "self-help" books. I'm totally content with it though because most of these books have been helping me tremendously!

I have about four books that I've had in rotation, and so far so good. I'll definitely post the collection of books I've been reading these past couple of months. Maybe you'll find one, some or all of them helpful.

I just started Mandy Hale's The Single Woman: Life, Love and a Dash of Sass. I downloaded the ebook version (my first ebook!) to my Kindle iPhone account. I would've preferred the paperback book, but I couldn't resist the $2.99 deal they were having on Amazon. But I think it'll be nice to have the ebook version with me where ever I go because it'll be on my phone. I've already started reading a bit of it, and I have to say that I'm hooked already.

I can see much of the material being topics I'd like to share on my blog and write about in correlation to my journey. It should be good. 

If you have any book suggestions related to healing from a broken heart or an ended relationship that you deem read worthy, send them my way! This should be good. I'm excited to learn from this book and the rest of my books.

So tonight I had the chance to see Disney's Frozen, and let me tell you, I was inspired! Through this nine month journey as Brittany the Brave, I've been blessed with an incredible circle of women -- my sisters, and my family! They've been my saving grace and they've brought me back to life with their love, wisdom, support and patience. I don't believe I'll ever be able to repay them for what they have done for me. Honestly, I don't think they truly know what they've done for me, but nevertheless, I am indebted to them always. 

If you haven't had the chance to watch Frozen I highly suggest you do because it's so refreshing! Take your mother, your grandmother, aunt, niece, daughter, sister, bff! Take all the special women in your life to see this movie because it celebrates the beauty of sisterhood and womanhood. Disney finally gave little girls a movie that teaches them that they don't need a Prince Charming to save them. They are more than capable of saving themselves and the one's they love. It's brilliant! 

Which bring me back to the focal point of my journey. I can save myself. I don't need Prince Charming to come in and save my day or myself. I don't need a man to validate my existence or identity. I have myself, and I have amazing individuals in my life who have provided me with encouragement and a helping hand every now and then. I'm set for this journey to continue into 2014.

There are times like tonight where I just lie there in the dark and I listen to a playlist of songs that he use to listen to and songs that he knew reminded me of him. It’s like I’m obsessed with these songs, the sounds of drums, the bass, the electric and acoustic guitar, the trumpet, the keyboard, and the piano. I’m obsessed with the melodies, but most importantly, I’m obsessed with the lyrics.

I didn’t understand why I had the sudden urge to listen to nothing but these songs. When we were together I admit I would get tired of listening to them especially during our road trips. Now every chance I get I listen to these words. I realized a couple of weeks ago that I find comfort in the lyrics and the familiar sounds. It’s like he’s here with me when I listen to this playlist. He’s in the lyrics and in the sound. I close my eyes and listen. Every song takes me directly back into a moment or moments I once shared with him. I indulge in my memories and the pain from my heartache doesn’t seem to hurt so much. But then the playlist ends and I return to my reality. The heartache usually twice as bad, but I take it and I do it all over again because in those moments I’m close to him again.
