Tu Bishvat is coming up!

“Tu Bishvat” is a Jewish holiday whose name means “the 15th of Shvat.” (“Tu” is the letters tet and vav, which represent 15 in the Hebrew letter-to-number system. Shvat is the Hebrew month that started last night, and “b” means “in.”)

Tu Bishvat is considered the new year for trees. It’s one out of four Jewish new years days; the other three are Rosh Hashanah, the first of Nisan (simplified, the new year for kings and rental houses), and the first of Elul (simplified, the new year for cows).

Tu Bishvat occurs around the time the almond trees in Israel bloom. There are seven species associated with Israel and with Tu Bishvat: Grapes, pomegranates, figs, olives, dates, wheat, and barley.

On Tu Bishvat, many people have the custom of having a seder. This is unlike a Passover seder, except in that it involves the ritualistic eating of food: in this case, the seven species, as well as four categories of fruit based on presence of peels/pits, and white and red wine (or grape juice).

Tu Bishvat has also come to be associated with environmentalism.

Some ideas of ways to celebrate Tu Bishvat:

- Find out if a synagogue, Jewish community center, or Jewish social group in your area is hosting a Seder or a Tu Bishvat themed Shabbat

- Host a seder and invite your friends (how to lead a seder | list of haggadot)

- Go outside and hug a tree

- Eat a fruit with the intention of it being for Tu Bishvat

- Adopt a plant or make a terrarium

- Do something eco-friendly, like take the stairs instead of elevator (if you can), or recycle something you’d usually throw away

- Donate to an organization that fights for the environment or to plant a tree in Israel

- Get involved in an activist organization fighting for environmental justice

The last one — learning about and getting involved with environmental justice — is especially important because Tu Bishvat coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year!

i hate this so much but this knowledge is too powerful to keep from you all.

last night @phaltu discovered that setting your font to comic sans in google docs improves writing speed and creativity by an insane amount. “no” i said and “die” but then i tried it and god. i wish it wasn’t this way. i wish it wasn’t true. i wish i could protect you all from this but it’s real.

something about this font is so disarming. something about this font lets you look past the shape of the words and into their soul. i’ve never written so much as i did last night, on my phone, at 2am, in comic sans.

if you have writer’s block. if you lack inspiration. if you need this. don’t be afraid to use it. sometimes the things we find most horrifying are also the things we need the most. trust me. let comic sans into your life.

This is because comic sans is a dyslexic friendly font, and was designed for ease of reading. It’s disarming and supposed to help! But, it’s still..comic sans and if you don’t want to use that, there are other fonts that should give you similar effects, like OpenDyslexic

Comic sans is just more available so this is still good advice for writers.
