Never ending period after WLS
Hey guys, so I never found posts on this so I wanted to share my expereince.
I have had the Nexplanon (arm implant for birth control) since March 2014. Before that I was on the bill (Yaz) for ~5 years. I had a normal period while on the pill, but a few months leading up to changing to the Nexplanon, I was spotting/PMSing more, so I wanted to try something new.
I still spotted with the Nexplanon on occasion, with a legit ‘period’ every 3-4 months.
After surgery on 11/9/15, I peed for the first time and realized I got my period. Many people warned me with the trauma of surgery and the stress that this would happen.
But then my period didn’t go away.
At my 1 Month post op with my nurse, I spoke to her about it. She wasn’t concerned and mentioned with the hormone changes and trauma, it happens to many people and it would level off.
For another 6 weeks I would keep having my period - like, heavy fresh blood. Enough that I scheduled an appt with my OBGYN because DAMN. I couldn’t tell if I was tired from working 14 hour days or if I was becoming anaemic!
So I went in and spoke to my bariatric nurse for my 2.5month follow up a couple weeks ago and she said once again, it’s probably normal/fine, but understood my concern and that I wanted to discuss birth control (because SO MANY PEOPLE ON INSTAGRAM ARE PREGGERS, WTF?)
Anyways!
So I went to the OBGYN on Friday. Everything is normal, but she was able to really explain what was going on.
My Nexplanon is progesterone based. While that worked well in the past, because I am losing fat so quickly (where estrogen is stored) my estrogen levels are completely out of whack, causing my uterine lining to never “heal” and stop bleeding.
So I have officially started the Nuvaring, and kept my Nexplanon in as well. So I am “doubled up” on birth control, and have 2 methods that don’t require being absorbed in my digestive tract.
I’ve already noticed a decrease in my bleeding. She is hoping I will completely level out in the next couple months, but that this should help the symptoms at least.
I hope this helps someone! I know I was looking for information and was struggling finding anything!
