Jaxon smirked, thinking about what to enumerate for a moment before glancing back at the girl who he grew fond of, “For one, you’re not into drugs which is a good thing, and then you’re good at what we’re doing,” He continued, he was going to say that she was good on being a spy but considering how many might people overhear him when he says that, he decided against it. The last thing he wanted to do was to compromise their mission, he glanced at her before smiling, “All I know is that in my eyes, you’re good………” And beautiful and so much more but Jaxon held his tongue, this wasn’t the right place nor he was the right guy for her, when he got into this business, he knew what was in store for him, he saw his dad sacrifice a lot (his mother, their relationship as father and son, and many more). When he first stepped into the academy, he was so unsure that he should do this but after the training he went through to get there, there was no turning back and he never did since them. Of course, there were thoughts about how he would have a normal life if he chose to not to get himself tied up to the organization but it always fade away.
It wasn’t until he met and got to know Brooke that he stopped and taught about having a normal relationship but even if she feels the same way for him, they were too invested to be great spies. As much as he wanted to say that they knew each other like the back of their own palms, he wasn’t really sure of that, he heard some rumors here and there about Brooke, but he shrugged it off, knowing that if it was true, then so be it, but in the back of his head, of course, he wanted it to be false. Looking at her right now, how she seems to be okay, he cannot imagine her pulling the trigger to someone she had known, better yet someone she had loved so he had never asked her that quite personal question and he had told himself that it was just rumors. For someone who can smile as she can, he regarded that as a fake rumor. She was doing quite well in every classes and missions so obviously there are people who would be jealous of her and would talk shit behind her back but he wouldn’t believe it unless she confirmed it.
Jaxon made a face since they were talking about puking now, the last time he had bumped into Max, he was so sure that they guy was too drunk for his own good. But as a spy, they needed to blend in so she wouldn’t really babysit the guy, they need to protect him, yes, but their job was to look for the threat and find intel in the school, someone who might also be here to spy on Max but was not on the same side as them. “I seriously cannot imagine that, living your life under a microscope, that’s the right description of how Max lives,” He muttered under his breath, he was not exactly a fan of the guy (not only because he was too close to Brooke but also, he heard that he likes to sneak out in the middle of the night without telling anyone which he thinks was a total selfish thing to do, the bodyguards were only there to help him out but a part of him understands it as well, they were there 24/7 and he needed some time for himself). “Might cause a couple hundred bucks, do you want me to scoop in the puke and put in inside the container and we’ll sell it?” He teased her smirking, that was unprofessional and he wouldn’t do anything like that.
“You wanted to dance anyways,” Jaxon chuckled under his breath, this wasn’t really good for his self control but since she wanted to dance, he was giving in. “Not into slow dance, are you?” He mumbled when he realized how her reaction when the music changed, everyone around them has their own world anyways, he can spot some couple kissing, his eyes even saw Max outside in the veranda talking to his friend, Casey, he was focusing on other things beside the fact that he was so close to Brooke, he took a deep breath before letting his eyes drag along her feature, “We will just be bad on this together,” He told her, this wasn’t his first dance or anything so he can assure her that he wouldn’t be stepping on her foot anytime soon, “Do you think you’ll miss this?” Jax asked her before raising her brow, he doesn’t want to admit it but he will probably miss this place, the freedom and spending time with Brooke, when they go back to the academy, they’d probably be assigned to different missions.
“Ah, yes, I don’t do drugs. That makes me automatically good! Because there’s nothing else in the world that makes someone good other than if you don’t do drugs,” Brooke shot back, her usual playful grin etched on her face as she nudged Jaxon gently. Her face softened at his next compliment, her head tilting a fraction as she peered up at him. She knew what he meant, despite how vague it was. She knew he was saying that to protect themselves from any potential eavesdroppers. Nevertheless, the compliment still made her feel warmer inside; at least someone believed in her. Even if she could list a number of reasons why he shouldn’t. After all, if Jaxon didn’t believe in her then who else would? There were her parents who always pressured her to be ‘perfect’ from a young age - but they never truly believed in her. Not really. Besides, with the amount of guilt she still lived with on a daily basis, she never quite had the capacity to believe in herself. She couldn’t bear with the thought of Jaxon’s opinion on her being tainted by a mistake she so wrongly made so long ago -- or at least, it felt like a lifetime ago. It never stopped her from wondering whether he already knew, and if he did, then she admired him so much for being able to work with her. Realising that she may have been looking at him for longer than she should have, she laughed softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear again, momentarily glancing away from him as she thought of something to say. “Well, you’re not so bad yourself,” Brooke responded cheekily, the bright smile crossing her lips as she looked back at him again.
With that being said, Brooke was almost certain that her comment was a mere understatement. ‘Not so bad’ barely scraped the surface on how much of a good person she saw him as. Sure, she may have been a bit hesitant about working with someone at first - after all, she was adamant that she was capable of carrying this task out by herself, that any partners could be a liability or restrict her from reaching her full potential. She couldn’t have been more wrong, and in her mind, she felt guilty for ever making that assumption. Jaxon was by far one of the best spies she knew and she felt so lucky and thankful to have him on this mission with her. Doing it by herself would have been a struggle, and awfully lonely at times, she reasoned. While her mind was predominantly focused on the mission, she actually enjoyed getting to know Jaxon too, which only made her own feelings confuse her even more. Though she’d never cross the invisible boundary never spoken of, it didn’t mean she never thought about it. Spies weren’t supposed to become romantically involved with other spies but… No - she couldn’t think about that. Not after last time. Besides, she couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if Jaxon ever found out about her… about those rumours that were true. The thought that he could never look at her the way he always did made her feel sick to her stomach. Though, if he ever asked about it, she would not lie to him. Brooke only hoped that it would never come to light.
Nodding her head at Jaxon’s words, she glanced around at their surroundings just to ensure that Max was still located in sight. Having a distance between him was a good thing; it meant that if anything happened, they could get to him quickly and extract him. And it also meant that he wasn’t constantly under the impression that they were smothering him. Unlike Jaxon, Brooke happened to quite like Max. He was always nice towards her, even if the jokes he cracked were awful. She just felt sorry for him; he only wanted to be normal. Being in the spotlight a lot was far from normal in itself, let alone having a constant unknown threat hovering above you, ready to be pounced on at any moment. “You don’t like him very much, do you?” Brooke asked Jaxon calmly. It was more of an observation rather than a question, one that she noticed. If he denied it, she wouldn’t press on or accuse him of anything. But part of her was a little curious. Just a little. She hummed in thought for a couple of moments, until she realised that he’d spoke again. “You do that, and I’ll give you my lunch money they gave me for the rest of term. Because, despite, you know, what we do, that just takes pure bravery. Hey, I’d even request that you get some kind of a medal for it,” She encouraged him jokingly, unable to help the wider her smile grew. It was impossible not to smile around Jaxon; he made it so easy to.
She could not explain the weird feeling she had, being this close to him. It almost felt like she was somehow intruding his personal space. It wasn’t the vibe he was giving her, but it was excessive need to overthink and analyse every little thing. But she couldn’t help how secure and safe she felt, being so close to him. It made her feel confused and nervous and everything in between and she couldn’t decide whether this was a good thing or not. She wondered whether Jax could also feel this -- tension? Could she even call it that? -- that radiated from them, and she wondered what it meant whether he could or couldn’t. But she tried to take her mind off it, and focused a little on not tripping over his feet as they danced together. Brooke couldn’t take her gaze away from his lips as he spoke again and she gulped, hard, before raising her gaze to meet his eyes as she pondered over her response. “It’s not my first choice of dance, I’ll admit, but I’ll make do, I suppose,” She responded with a small shrug rolling from her shoulders, a light laugh escaping her. “Will I miss this? Hmm…” Her voice trailed off a moment as she mulled over what she wanted to say. “I guess so. It’s been nice, hasn’t it? Getting a taste of what being normal is like. I mean -- not exactly normal because, you know, but to get a sense of what it’s like in the slightest. Not having to worry about things you otherwise would back… at, um, you know where. Apart from Max, of course. And it being just us on this. We make a good team. So, yeah, I think I will,” She admitted honestly, followed by a nod of her head like it clarified her statement. “How about you?”
