going through all the muppet movies in a row made me realize that like. miss piggy was made in the 70's. and it's so rare even today to have a character like her. she's loud, she's selfish, she's funny, she's extremely vain, she's obsessed with romance, she's violent, she's kind of annoying, and there's not a single moment in any of these films where she's asked to tone down any of these personality traits. i am not joking when i say that miss piggy might be one of the best treated female characters ever written

This is not in any sort of principled stance or hot take or anything, because I honestly am baffled by my own reaction here! But when I heard that there was going to be a movie adaptation of the odyssey my entire reaction was just, "why?"

I read the Odyssey in high school and I liked it! But I feel absolutely zero emotions about seeing it on screen. Just a big "why would somebody take the time to do that?" Which is weird!! Because I have been excited for movie adaptations of books before! But not this one???

Somebody needs to help me process my feelings around this, I fired my therapist when he got a little too supportive of my ambitions

That's not it, I haven't been keeping up with the discourse and I know very little about what choices were made for this adaptation. This is literally my reaction from the first announcement before I even knew who was directing it.

I cannot emphasize enough that the details of the production did not matter in the least to me, this could be Guillermo del Toro's self-funded ultimate vanity project with a fully animatronic cyclops and I'd still be like 🤷‍♀️

Figured it out: I liked the Odyssey as a poem. My ideal adaptation would be a stage play with the narrator standing center-stage and reciting the whole thing, while a shadowcast of actors play out the scenes in the background in complete silence with no spoken lines. Or like, marionettes instead of live actors maybe. That would be cool.

All this discourse over who does "painting with light"

Hiroshi Nagai's paintings need sunglasses to look at.

They look like how it feels to walk across a parking lot on a 98° summer day without a speck of shade in sight.

They look like heaven but also like you'd burn your bare feet on the ground.

Even when you can see shade you know it's not enough and the minute you step out you'll be burnt to a crisp like a vampire.

And it's BEAUTIFUL

I'll throw in the wonderful Eizin Suzuki into this ring too, a man whose work just breathes light without actually using dynamic lighting in the usual way. It's no surprise both Nagai and Suzuki are both considered prolific in art pertaining to the city pop genre because they're able to paint these kinds of scenes with a delicate touch.

This feels like I could trip on that radio and fall right into that water, feeling the crystal waves as I drop in.

And this, a nice stroll down a resort strip, where my sunscreened skin could literally feel cooked if I leaned too close to the tiling.

And then a nice stretch of summer street, wherein you could see your face in the flushed red of that car provided it didn't blind you from its sunny reflections.

I don't think I even need to say anything more, Suzuki's a massive influence in how he even places colours so warmly in such unorthodox manner. It's a naturally sunkissed talent~ 🌊
