How many people am I supposed to be following?
The Obvious | Jean + Brooke
When Jean drove up to the diner, and spotted Brooke sitting helplessly on the curb, it broke her a little. Knowing that there wasnât much she could do for her friend, except drive her to the doctorâs, upset her entirely. She felt there just had to be something else she could do to comfort her or let her know that she was going to fine and nothing was truly wrong with her. But she just couldnât, incase she was wrong.Â
She smiled when Brooke got into the passenger side, âSorry about being late; flat tire. This damn car is on itâs way out, I think. Itâs probably time to start saving money again to get something new, but old.â Although her old Volkswagen had always provided her with some type of stability, it seemed it was just something else in her life that was willing to say goodbye. Thankfully though, the address for the doctor wasnât too far and was somewhere Jean knew sheâd be able to get to fast.
Jean looked at Brooke and passed along a reassuring smile. She was grateful to help in some way, even if it wasnât as much as she would have liked. Wanting to make light of the situation, she joked, âDonât mention it. Iâm sure I can think of a way for you to pay me back. Take out the trash, wash the dishes for a week, give Shakespeare a bath; just to name a few.â She laughed, knowing the last one wasnât likely to happen, but thought it was worth a shot.Â
There was an unusual silence that Jean didnât care for. She knew they both had things on their mind, but she wasnât sure how to handle such a situation. If Brooke was pregnant, she knew sheâd do anything to help her with whatever she needed. It wasnât that Brooke was just a âgood friendâ she was more so a sister and was grateful to have such a close relationship with her. Luckily, before the silence could last any longer, she drove into the packed parking lot. She picked a close parking space, parked and turned off the car.Â
Turning towards Brooke, she gave her a reassuring smile, âAre you ready?â
Brooke made sure that she didn't go to a doctor that her parents knew. Between her and her sister, Brooke was the more loose and wild one. Everyone knew it, she didn't exactly bother to hide it either, something she knew her parents often wished she did but that as the thing about Brooke, she hated acting like the perfect daughter she wasn't. Knowing that if she had gone to a doctor that was a friend of her parents, she would see the judgmental looks from them and almost hear them telling her how messed up her life had become now. Brooke knew that her parents' friends weren't all too fond of her. She was underachieving while their children were Yale or Harvard graduates, Brooke barely made it out of Florida State in one piece.Â
She was glad though that she had someone like Jean. Jean was the kind of friend that Brooke knew she could trust and she was thankful for someone like Jean. Brooke knew that through thick and thin, Jean would always be there for her, even her prognosis came up positive she knew that Jean would be the one to stick with her through all of it. This lead her to think about Noah. Would he be sticking with her or would he just runaway.
The very thought of raising a child on her own scared her to death. She didn't want to be a single mother working at a diner, being harassed by men constantly and living in an apartment in the not so pleasant side of Vero Beach. She could barely support herself how as she going to support a baby? Especially by herself, but she knew that Jean would try and help as much as she could, something Brooke didn't want to pressure Jean into either though.
"It's fine," Brooke mumbled and placed her things in the backseat. Unlike Jean, her car was a little more reliable. It had been a present, or rather a bribe, from her parents to get her to straighten up and at least good enough grades to get into University. It had worked for a while, then come University, Brooke just let loose and partied the days away. "Guess I should have taken my car instead," Brooke laughed and shook her head.
She laughed when Jean mentioned a list of things she could do. "I could but I don't think I could wash Shakespeare, but I am willing to do everything else," Brooke admitted. Shakespeare wasn't all to fond of Brooke. Always hissing at her whenever she passed by and tended to stay away from Brooke whenever Shakespeare could. The silence in the car was maddening and Brooke had a feeling that Jean wanted to ask her about what she was going to do if she was pregnant. She had a feeling that Jean wanted to ask her a million and one questions.
Once they were at the parking lot though, Brooke sighed and looked over at Jean. "Not really, but we have to do this," she said. "I have to do this," Brooke said with more determination in her voice and quickly got out of the car. She walked into the building and smiled at the receptionist. "Hi, I have a an appointment and my name is Brooklyn Campbell," she said to the woman. The woman then told her to take a seat and that the doctor would be on their way.
Turning to the waiting area she saw that there were quite a few women sitting with pregnant bellies sitting and waiting. Taking a seat, Brooke motioned for Jean to sit beside her. Brooke leaned over to Jean. "I feel really awkward, don't you?"
I've been underground
I donât even know whatâs going on half of the time and Iâve been sitting at the park  watching people most days.
I should at least know whatâs going on Vero⊠Whatever, doesnât fuckinâ matter. Whatâs going on with you?
You've... been watching people... is that normal behaviour?
Nothing much, went to the doctors, worked my ass off at the diner. I don't think I've met you before though. I'm Brooklyn Campbell and you are?

How's it going, Vero?
Iâd say pretty quickly, if I leave nowâŠ
Run fast boyfriend. I think Jean's coming back. I would hate for this to be over so quickly and I haven't even gotten my clothes off.
How's it going, Vero?
Oh, no, I donât think I have anything else in mind. You seemed to have done quite all right when it comes to the planning on your own. When can I come over?
How fast can you get here?
How's it going, Vero?
Did you have something specific in mind for such visits?
Well... it required less to none clothing, a bit of a workout and quite possibly a bed or a shower. Why? What did you have in mind?
How's it going, Vero?
Oh, that one. Yeah, itâs finished. And no, it wasnât an order, unfortunately. Hopefully someone wants to pay a few bucks for it, though. I could use the cash.
Oh, well um it's nice to see you out and about again. Work at the diner has been absolute shit. Al's killing me I swear. Jean's been at Sam's... a lot. She's barely home so I'm lonely. Feel like visiting me more often?
The Obvious | Jean + Brooke
When Jean entered into the newly, local, refurbished bookstore, she could only hope that this part of her day would pass quickly. It wasnât because she didnât enjoy the job - which she had thankfully lined up for herself, or the fact that her day didnât really start off smoothly - thanks to her early shift at Alâs. It was the sheer fact of knowing that Brooke desperately needed her company for a doctorâs appointment. Jeanâs company, not her beloved boyfriend; who she spoke of any chance she could. However, the reason behind the doctorâs appointment was still a mystery to both Jean and Brooke. Sure, Brooke has the symptoms of someone with the flu, yet there is something different, something more; which caused them to have their suspicious.Â
If Brooke were to have a baby, what was her plan of action, or Jeanâs action; since she had so gracefully let Brooke live with her. They werenât exactly well off, or fit to really care for another being. They both worked, both had jobs that really took up most of their time. Their source of income wasnât exactly the greatest and was minimum wage; except for the small offers Jean would get or Brookeâs boyfriend would get for his paintings. Before Jean could really focus anymore on the situation - she wasnât quite sure was even a situation yet - she realized it wasnât even her situation, as much as it was Brookeâs. Though she was slightly caught in the middle of it for now.Â
Stepping back, she took the last photo of the new computer area they had installed; making it beter for those unable to manage the large book card catalog they had insisted on keeping. When she had finished, she thanked the owners of the small bookstore, which they reciprocated and texted Brooke immediately when she had made it to her car.
- Hey, I just finished up. Iâm on my way.Â
Brooke was nervous. She didn't know if she wanted to go to the doctors to figure out what was going on with her or it just let it happen. She had a sneaking suspicions of what it was the was causing her to fall so ill in the recent weeks. She hadn't seen Noah all that much as she had been busy working overtime and he had been busy and caught up with painting, not that Brooke minded anyways. Brooke had been so busy trying to come to terms with what as going on with her, she wasn't even sure if she wanted to be around him during the time she was coping.
It hadn't been until Jean had persuaded her to go to the doctors that she knew there was no way in dancing around the inevitable. She needed to know and she needed a plan of action once her suspicions came true before it was too light to really do anything. Brooke laughed to herself. At least if she was knocked up, she got knocked up after she was done her formal educations. With the way Brooke was, she had thought she would have gotten pregnant a long time a go back in university.
She jumped from the chair she was sitting on at Al's diner when she got a text as she waited for Jean to finish whatever it was she was doing. She quickly replied back, showing her exasperation and left the diner as fast as she could before Al roped her into another shift. She needed to find out soon before she chickened out or something.
Brooke waited at the curb for Jean, wrapping her sweater closer to her body. She wondered what was going to change when her fears were confirmed. Would Noah even want to be a part of it? "Finally," she mumbled when Jean stopped at the front of the diner. Brooke go into the passenger seat and told her the address of the doctor she was going to. "Thanks for doing this for me."
