There’s more to it. Trump works with conservative media. They know if they do what he wants, he’ll disparage their competition (call them fake news) and seemingly lend them credibility. (If the president is willing to call in to Fox and Friends, then that clearly means they’re trustworthy, right? Right???
Then you factor in visibility. Fox News presents itself as the underdog. The sole warrior against the heinous Mainstream Media Fake News Deep State fascist Socialist communists. Ignore the fact that Fox News actually has the largest market share of the information landscape in America, they accomplish this by pointing to the NUMBER of networks that aren’t conservative leaning. If there’s more of them, clearly they’re more powerful. Right? Right???
Then you bake in the echo chamber. But this isn’t just “we all watch Fox News.” It’s “We all get our information from Fox News and then when we meet up we compare notes and our notes match. Obviously that means it’s true if two different people came to the same conclusion. Then you add in who’s saying these things. It’s your friends. Your neighbors. Your mechanic. Your doctor. People you trust not to lie to you. If they say the same thing, it’s clearly valid, right?
So when you factor in a controlled information ecosystem and then have that information ecosystem not report on the bad stuff, spin the stuff that can be spun, dismiss the opposition as stupid and/or radical, and then provide easy to remember branded phrases to the opposition’s points they’re likely to hear, you have a whole system set up to tell the people what’s “true” rather than encouraging them to subject themselves to actual substantive thought. They make things simple, break it down into us vs. them, and then manage what you hear about and what you don’t.
