Grad School- Part 2
The first semester of grad school, SUCKED. I don’t know how else to say it. I had a bad case of impostor syndrome, and apparently women of color from working class/low socio economic status have it worst. I hit every mark, so you can only imagine how I was feeling. I’m a first generation young Latina pursuing her masters in English. ENGLISH! English aint even my mofo first language. But I made it through my first semester and now I am 2 weeks into my 2nd semester.
This Spring has so much in store for me! I am taking 3 courses and I LOVE them! My classes: Social Justice & Literature, Black Lives Matter (YES! AMAZING RIGHT?) and I am working on a documentary film on the history of Africana Studies at Lehigh <-- my independent study! It’s LIT yall!
That’s not event the best part though! I am also the Graduate Assistant for the Office of Multicultural Affairs (I’ve been the GA since the start of my graduate program. My job is the only thing that kept me alive!) I get to work with incredible first generation students (like me)! On top of working with these fabulous people I am working with #TheBlackLatinaMovement to bring their new play #OfMothersandMen to campus!
“Derived from the American classic Of Mice and Men, Of Mothers and Men explores the varying relationships between women, their mothers, and the men in their lives.”
Major Key: Explores the lives of WOMEN OF COLOR.
But wait..there is more! Crystal’s work inspired me so much that I am now working with two of my bosses to create the inaugural Sisters in Conference! A conference for women of color BY women of color!
The play is Feb 25th and the conference is April 30th. And yes graduate school is a lot of work, but my professional work informs and inspires my academic work. Besides I’m not in this field to just write papers, publish, and present at conferences. I am in this field so that I can make an impact in my community and I am happy that this Spring I can engage in work that is important to me.
Welp, gotta get back to reading! Until next time.
Much love,
A Young Latina with dreams and passion.

Viola Davis: So…..the Elsa costume? Didn’t work for her. The Pirate? A no go. So she finally said,“ I just want to be YOU mommy”! So… uhh…..this is ME.
I am…weeping
This makes me want to sob - I feel like she has more wisdom in one beautiful wrinkle than most people in they’re entirety

Alabama is systematically trying to keep black people from voting
The state of Alabama, which requires a photo ID to vote, announced this week that it would stop issuing driver’s licenses in counties where 75 percent of registered voters are black.
Due to budget cuts, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said that 31 satellite DMV offices would no longer have access to driver’s licenses examiners, meaning that residents will need to travel to other counties to apply for licenses. The move comes just one year after the state’s voter photo ID law went into effect.
AL.com’s John Archibald asserted in a column on Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Justice should open an investigation into the closings.
“Because Alabama just took a giant step backward,” he wrote. “Take a look at the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters. That’s Macon, Greene, Sumter, Lowndes, Bullock, Perry, Wilcox, Dallas, Hale, and Montgomery, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office. Alabama, thanks to its budgetary insanity and inanity, just opted to close driver license bureaus in eight of them.”
“Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one,” Archibald explained. “But maybe it’s not racial at all, right? Maybe it’s just political. And let’s face it, it may not be either… But no matter the intent, the consequence is the same.”
This has been me...for the entire 6 weeks of grad school thus far.
