The day had rolled around, come and gone without a word between them, but Bruce isn't going to ignore it forever. After all, birthdays are important. They signify a celebration of the individual's past, present and future, and although he doesn't often show it, he's grateful to have her in his life ( even if she is a thorn in his side ). Truthfully, Helena's gift has been wrapped for days now, impatiently waiting for the day it gets passed onto its intended recipient and is revealed in all of its perfection. However, it has been unfairly tethered to its place of hiding due to Bruce's need to seem unattached and distant. Today, it finds itself free from the hidden compartment behind one of bookshelves, and in the hands of the gifter. The words come out with an almost unfriendly curtness, but Bruce lets the warmth trickle into his eyes as he holds out the present. "Happy belated birthday, Helena."

                 Boy howdy, does she ever love the note of condescending smart-assery in his voice —- maybe she’s filling the blanks in herself, here, but somehow a question like that seems loaded coming from a guy who’s, well. Loaded. Couldn’t possibly get it. The confines of her calling, the way the job traps it’s Slayer. A Slayer who’s far outlived her shelf life, doomed to fight back the night for time and all eternity. Or until some beastie gets lucky and has a good night. At least her Slayerness is no secret, these days. Could answer freely if she felt like it, but she doesn’t. Just counters him with a smirk, “Small talk.”

“Oh, somehow I very much doubt that.” Lips turn up into a mirrored smirk that never reaches his eyes. Behind her exterior lies a story he wants to unravel, a psyche rife for study, and potentially trouble. “But I’ll humour you. If small talk is, indeed, your cage, you must hate gatherings like these. I must have had the same conversation ten times over already this evening.”

Although he doesn’t say it out loud, Bruce knows exactly how she feels. How many nights had he spent wondering why he’s still here, alive ( by dictionary definition ), when his parents had unfairly breathed their last? However, they can’t let it consume them, least of all rule them. “You dedicate your life to a cause and you make sure that the world never wrongs anyone else in the way that you feel it has wronged you.”

the sight of mr. wayne made caspian sigh. his ears were still ringing- hoping that it would go away.

" n-no mr. wayne, i am alright. i can help you." he says. the werebat grabbed his mouth and he begins to research. a small smile escaped the detective's smile. a robbery? hmm.. he remembered seeing that on the news. " i will see what i can do." the man says. he ruffled his hair.

he opened up a web browser, and he searched for that news artile while keeping his own tab open too. the man made a dip of his head.

"Are you sure you're alright, Detective?" Bruce raised an inquisitive brow. Regardless of the man's answer, he certainly didn't look alright; the body language attested to that.

Working for GCPD wasn't easy. Bruce had seen what it was doing to Jim, Bullock, Montaya, and everyone else. The job wasn't for everyone, and it seemed to Bruce like Detective Wolfe was going through it at the moment. The last thing he wanted to do was add more stress. "You look a little...jumpy."

"Knowledge is a weapon." It's certainly the strongest one in his particular arsenal. The money and the gadgets would be next to nothing without his intellect. It's the main reason why he can stand on an even playing field with many of his more physically powerful associates. "Don't let the secrets control you, use them, let them make you stronger."

It really seems like Dick runs a much looser ship than he does. There’s no voting when it comes to working with Bruce; it’s his way or the highway. “Remind me ─ why did you decide to implement a voting system?”

One of the good ones? Bruce didn’t operate in black or white, but in a shade of grey, a colour that he didn’t feel created ‘good’ people. Good people didn’t act on vengeance, they didn’t brutalise without batting an eye, they did what’s right because they truly believed in doing it for the good of those they protect. In truth, he often felt like more of an antithesis for good. “I think we might have very different views on what makes a good person.”

Oh how familiar he was with these words. He’d said the exact same thing, used the motto to justify and enact his so called vengeance. Because it was fine. As long as they didn’t die, it was fine, wasn’t it? Regardless, he didn’t trust Bucky. Eyes locked onto her’s before he gave a quick, definitive shake of his head. “No, we let Commissioner Gordon take it from here.”

"Yeah yeah. I've heard it all before. 'She's my city, and I can't have the reckless and untrained endangering her safety.' And every variation there in. Sorry but you don't have the right sort of equipment. To do the work I've been doing." Hel remembers the barking of her father at anyone else who dared show their face in his city. But this is a job she's more than familiar with, scumbags she knows how to better deal with than a blunt fist. "So, you gonna try and fight me for it? Or are you gonna put your ego aside like Alfred tried to teach you and just let sleeping dogs lie?"

A pause. The way in which she talks is too precise to be a speech driven by lucky guessing. She doesn't just know the name of the man behind the cowl, she knows who he is on a personal level. How else would she know of Alfred and his teachings? It shouldn't be possible, but in Gotham, nothing is off the table. Tone changes as he asks the question that should have been the first to leave his lips. "Who are you?"
