So this was inspired by @bruhsoundeffect2 's infected leon au specifically! I decided to write the scene they described in this post where Leon faces Mendez and his legs mutate, as well as in this post with Ashley and Leon in his new "heels" (which is just too excellent a comparison haha!)

The fight had been going well. Okay, not well, considering Leon is currently stuck in a burning building. Also his opponent is a giant of a man who now sports two sets of crab arms, and whose vertebrae have turned to centipede legs. But, considering all that? Itād been going well.Ā
Ashley had fled as Leon instructed, leaving the agent to whittle the priest down, bullet by bullet. Leon slots another magazine into his Silver Ghost, the black plating and claws that replaced the skin of his hands clicking against the metal. It almost resembles a glove. Almost. But Leon knows it isnāt. Even if he tries to convince himself otherwise every time he catches a glimpse of the dark hands, black veins creeping up his arms.
With a fresh round of ammo, Leon raises his gun, aiming for Mendezās head. But before he has a chance to get off a shot, he has to leap sideways to avoid a massive piece of flaming timber. Leon swears, shoving himself back to his feet, but heās not quite fast enough. A massive hand closes around Leonās body, hoisting him into the air and pinning him against the wall.Ā
Leon writhes, trying to reach his gun or knife or something, but his arms are pinned tight to his sides, legs kicking at the priestās chest and arms. āStill you resist,ā Mendez murmurs, a massive set of pincers hovering just above Leon. Leon pants, heat licking his skin. He glares at the priest even as he struggles for a way out. āGive in, little hunter, join us.ā
āFuck off,ā Leon snarls, but the sound comes out choked. He lashes out at Mendez again, even as his calves burn, muscles locked and seizing. Then, on his next thrash, something snaps. Leon gags, head snapping back in a choked off scream as pain floods his mind. For a brief moment it feels like his bones have shoved through his skin, muscles turned inside out. There is nothing but blinding agony.
For a moment Leon wavers on the edge of consciousness, certain his legs have been torn off or shoved inside out. But then he feels them twitch, a rush of pins and needles where pain was before. They still hurt like hell, but itās a bone deep ache akin to a muscle cramp, not liquid fire.Ā
Gritting his teeth, Leon braces himself again, pulling his legs to his chest and bracing his feet against Mendezās arm. Heās vaguely aware that it feels wrongāfeet splayed too wide, the grip of his feet too strongābut Leonās long learned to ignore the state of his body over pure bloody survival.
He digs his feet in and shoves and miraculously, Mendezās hand falls away, the priest howling in pain and anger. Leon hits the ground, but his feet are already under him, absorbing the impact. He pants for a second, pulling desperate oxygen into his lungs, the heat of the air burning his throat. Leon focuses on Mendez, withdrawing back to his perch in the rafters, one of his human arms now a bloody ragged stump.Ā
Leon bares his teeth, adrenaline singing in his blood. āThat all you got?ā Leon taunts, shifting his weight, the ache in his legs fading with each passing moment. āHavenāt killed me yet!ā
Mendez roars and the dance begins again.
Despite his brush with disaster, Leon moves even faster than before. He jumps and rolls away from Mendezās attacks, at one point even bunching his legs under him and leaping onto the priest midair, bringing his knife down into the manās neck. Mendez howls, the remaining human arm reaching for Leon, but heās already dropped to the floor.
Finally, after minutes that stretch into hours, the mutated priest finally falls to the ground, legs twitching their last. Leon doesnāt have time to celebrate though, considering heās still stuck in a burning building. He sprints for the exit, just barely leaping through a window before a ceiling beam caves in behind him.
As soon as Leon is outside he staggers a dozen meters away from the inferno before allowing himself to slump to the ground. He coughs, smoke clogging his lungs while heat scorches one side of his face.Ā
āDamn it,ā Leon wheezes, rubbing his chest. The roaring flames cast everything into sharp relief, the nightās blackness evaporating under the intense heat. And, under the flicking orange cast, Leon finally catches sight of his feet.
They arenāt his.
Leonās boots are gone and in their place are massive splayed toes tipped with shining black talons, like those of a dinosaur. Bile rises in Leonās throat as he traces the shining black shell upward, past his elongated and warped ankles, over his calves and up to his knees. The smooth surface is cut by grooves and small jagged spines, the black shimmering in the firelight. Leon tries flexing his toes and to his horror, the dinosaur-like talons do so instead.
Oh God, what the fuck, no no no noā
āLeon!?ā
His head snaps to the side at the sound of Ashleyās voice. She hurries toward where he sits sprawled in the dirt, her eyes scanning him up and down. Leon gets a brief glimpse of her expression contorting in surprise and horror as her gaze lands on his legs, twisted into something inhuman. This isnāt just claws on his fingertips. This is his entire fucking leg.
Then, before Leon can wrangle his thoughts togetherāmostly to make sure he doesnāt scream when he opens his mouthāAshley cuts in first.
āI didnāt take you for a guy to try thigh-highs,ā Ashley says, giving him a strained smile.
Leon blinks, his panicked thoughts abruptly derailing into a wall. āWhat?ā he asks dumbly, and Ashley hesitantly waves a hand at his twisted feet.
āYou know, thigh-high boots? Kinda scandalous for a government agent, donāt you think?ā She pauses, then ducks her head. While it's hard to see in the light of the fire, thereās a distinct blush crawling up her cheeks. āSorry, that was dumb, Iāā
Despite himself, Leon barks a pained laugh, shaking his head. āNo, thank you, Iā¦ā He trails off, pulling his legs closer to his body. The talons that have replaced his feet carve trenches in the dirt. āā¦It happened again.ā
Ashley kneels down next to him, hands hovering over his now black slicked skin. His pants, Leon realizes, have been torn ragged at the knee, ripped open by the sharp spines. āDoes it hurt?ā the young woman asks quietly, eyes flicking from his face to his new feet.Ā
Slowly, Leon shakes his head. āNo. Not anymore.ā He swallows roughly, saliva catching in his throat. āAshley, Iāll protect you as long as I can butā¦ but if they get in my headāā
āNo,ā Ashley interrupts, shaking her head fiercely. āI trust you,ā she says, staring him in the eyes. āEven if theyāre trying to make you one of them, I trust you. I know youāll keep me safe. You already have, and youāre going to be okay.ā Her tone brokers no argument.
āā¦Alright,ā Leon exhales, nodding. Because sheās right, he will. Even if heās slowly turning into a bug monster, it doesnāt matter. On his life, Leon will get Ashley home. And yet here he is, sitting in the dirt and wasting precious time.Ā
āRight, we need to keep moving,ā Leon says, pulling his legs under him to stand. āThat fire is bound to haveā!ā Before Leon can finish, his legs buckle under him and he faceplants straight into the dirt.Ā
āLeon!ā Ashley yelps, quickly leaning over as Leon shoves an arm underneath his chest and levers himself up. What the hell? āLeon, are you okay?ā
Leon doesnāt answer, instead trying again to get his feet under him and stand, but again, he canāt even get them to hold his weight before he crashes back to the ground Fuck, Leon realizes with a growing sense of panic as his feet kick against the ground, joints rolling and bending in unnatural ways. He canāt fucking walk.Ā
āLeon?ā Ashley repeats as Leon sits back on his ass again, staring mindlessly into the distance. āWhatās wrong?ā
He canāt stand. He canāt walk. How the hell is Leon supposed to save the Presidentās daughter if he canāt fucking walk?!Ā
Hissing in frustration Leon levers himself up on his arms again. His feet fold and bend where theyāre not supposed to, compacted under his body. Leon feels like half his nerve connections end in static, tied to things he doesnāt know how to control.Ā
āLeon?ā Ashley asks again, a nervous lilt to her voice. Shit, heās scaring her, isnāt he?
Leon keeps his head pointed at the ground, shame burning in his face. āIā¦ I canāt get myself up.āĀ
Ashley makes a wordless exclamation of surprise, and then sheās instantly by his side, hands under his arms to help him stand. With her aid, Leon manages to get upright, legs quivering under him. The only way he can stand is on what seems to be on his toes, clawed talons splayed out as he struggles to stay upright. His balance is completely shot.Ā
Ashley wraps one of his arms around her shoulders, encouraging him to lean on her. Leon doesnāt have much of a choice. With Ashleyās help, Leon stumbles away from the still-roaring fire. As they go, Leon blinks as he realizes heās over half a foot taller than he should be. Fuck.Ā
This is bad. How is he supposed to protect Ashley if he can barely move? How is he supposed to fight? Well, you did fight, his subconscious offers up. When you fought against the priest, you certainly werenāt struggling to stand. You just need to learn.
Learn, relearn, how to move his own body.
Leonās stomach twists, a heavy ball of lead settling amidst his innards. He doesnāt want to relearn, because if he does, that means accepting these monstrous limbs are part of him. Itās practically accepting his fate, consigning himself to existing as this. As a monster. But if he doesnāt, if Leon canāt move properly, then there is functionally no chance of him getting Ashley to safety.
On his life, heāll get Ashley home.Ā
Even if he has to accept heās becoming a monsterā¦ Leon wonāt let the same thing happen to her.
āHere we go,ā Ashley says, slowing as they reach another building. She tilts her head to look up at him. āYouā¦ alright?ā
Leon grunts, reaching out his free arm to brace against the wall. He stumbles a step, but manages to stay upright, and Ashley quickly wraps a hand around his arm, offering another point of contact. āJust need toā¦ figure this out,ā Leon mutters, looking down at his (not his, not hisā) feet. He takes a couple steps, legs quaking under him and talons sinking into the mud.
Ashley hums, helping him balance another couple steps before perking up. āOh, I know! Just pretend youāre wearing a pair of high heels!ā
āAnd what makes you think Iād have experience in that?ā Leon asks, briefly glancing at her. He quickly has to refocus on the ground, gritting his teeth. Shit, his ankles way too high upā¦
āIā Oh come on, Leon! Havenāt you ever tried on high heels just for fun?ā
Leon snorts. āCanāt say Iāve ever been a fan of dress up.ā
Ashley huffs, squeezing his arm a bit tighter. Leon appreciates that she doesnāt shove him in retribution, because right now he would absolutely eat dirt. āItās basically just walking on your tiptoes,ā Ashley says, rolling her eyes. āCome on, try the heels out, mister.ā
āNot heels,ā Leon mutters, but he does take the suggestion, shifting his weight a little. He doesnāt admit it, but Ashleyās suggestion does help. Still, how the hell are his fucked up toes managing to be both stiffer and more flexible than they should be?! Oblivious to his internal conflict, Ashley whoops as he manages to take a few steps without stumbling, then a few more where he doesnāt need to lean on her as heavily.Ā
āThere see? Weāll have you walking the catwalk in no time!ā Ashley chirps, grinning up at him. She whistles. āThigh-high heeled boots, not bad Mr. Agent.ā
AHHHHH OH MY GOSH ITāS HERE ITāS HERE AND ITāS AMAZING!!!
The encounter with Mendez went down EXACTLY as I pictured it. The pain of the transformation and the vague feeling of wrongness being overwritten by the raw instinct to survive - BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN!
I absolutely LOVE the way you characterize Leonās horror and his reactions to the changes heās experiencing. And the slow spiral of āfuck Iām turning into a monsterā being immediately stopped by Ashleyās thigh-high boots joke was perfect. Speaking of, the thigh-highs were a hilarious addition to the high heels situation, loved it.
His internal struggle with figuring how to move but also refusing to accept this as his new self was also incredibly written. UGH, I just absolutely LOVE the way you write these characters and you definitely NAILED the scenes I envisioned for this au.
Look forward to more of your work, as always! Iāve been so inactive lately art wise, but this may motivate me to get back into the infected Leon grind ahhhhhh
I just really wanted to draw him from the front (it was kind of torturous GOSH I HATE PERSPECTIVE). I also figured with how large and fuzzy he is, heād be the perfect cuddle buddy for Sherry.
Now, and I realllly need you to suspend belief here for a second, imagine an au where Leon and Sherry go on a mission together, but this time, things go wrong. Sherry finds herself in a dangerous situation with the latest BOW of the week and quickly finds herself outmatched. Before Leon is able to reach her, however, the BOW lands a lucky hit on Sherry, rendering her unconscious. Fueled by paternal rage, he takes down the offending BOW in a second, but by the time he manages to get to Sherry, he can tell that the injuries she has sustained are nearly fatal. Leonās witnessed death before, and he knows itās coming for Sherry. In desperation, he prays to anything that might be listening out there, and to his surprise, someone answers.
A mysterious voice seems to reach out to him from the void, telling him of a land that may bring Sherry back from her brush with death. As much as Leon hates the idea of playing with life and death, he decides to take the chance.
Boom, Leon is suddenly transported to the Forbidden Land of Shadow of the Colossus, and the voice, whoās revealed to be Dormin, guides him through the trials of the lands. Cue Leon climbing and taking down the colossi in epic battle sequences with his little combat knife - heās killed giants before why would these be any different!
Much like the game, as Dorminās energy seeps into his body, and each of the colossi fall, Leon becomes weaker and weaker. By the end, Leon finds himself fully corrupted by Dormin and falls before he can witness Sherryās revival. Before being fully overtaken by Dorminās influence, however, the gods of these lands strike him down, and instead of being banished for his sinful transgressions (like Wander was), Leon is instead punished into the form of the very colossi he had slain.
Soooooo yeah, this is definitely an outlandish crossover au, but kind of fun to think about nonethelessā¦
So I blame @polarspaz for this one - they drew Leon in Wanderās outfit which inspired me to design Leon as a colossus LOL
Since most of the colossi are animal-inspired, I decided to base Leonās look off of a wolf/dog because of how loyal he is. I wasnāt entirely sure about how big he would be, but I kinda picture him being about the same size as Kuromori (the 8th colossus).
So I have no explanation for how this could happen! The idea just came into my mind and wouldnāt leave until I drew it so here ya go T-T
I finally present the start of some of my Infected Leon au lore - with a rough storyboard as bonus!
Just a warning that this is gonna be a loooooong post. If you make it to the end, I applaud your dedication. As a treat, Iāll put the (admittedly extremely rough) sketch at the beginning so you donāt have to scroll all the way down if you donāt want to š
Well, without further ado, here we gooo~
So much of the beginning of the game is exactly the same ā Leon goes to Spain, he gets attacked by the villagers, yada yada yada. Mendez is also still the one who ends up knocking Leon out and injecting him with the plaga.
Things donāt start to change until the fight against Del Lago. You know when Leon faints after the fight and gets his first taste of hallucinations from the plaga? Thatās also when he also gets his first mutation. He wakes to find that he now has claw tipped hands covered in a hard plating that can only be described as chitin. Itās a mild mutation - he still has his 5 fingers and the relative shape of a hand, but the veins of his arms are extremely prominent, and it seems like the chitin will only continue creeping up.
Obviously, heās horrified, but heās not really surprised ā getting infected in his line of work seemed almost inevitable. As usual, Leon decides to push his emotions to the back of his mind and puts all his focus into his current mission.
The rest of the village progresses as usual. Ashley is somewhat frightened by the state of Leonās hands, but quickly realizes he means well when he helps her escape the church. The cabin scene also continues as per usual, with the exception that Luis expresses concern over Leonās new mutations, to which he mentions the existence of a suppression drug.
The next major mutation occurs during the Mendez fight. During the second phase, Mendez grabs Leon and pins him against the wall. Leon finds his arms immobilized, and any attempts to escape seem to have no effect. Sensing impending doom, the plaga steps in with a new mutation in Leonās legs, giving him wicked sharp claws in the form of a new set of dinosaur-like feet. Itās just what he needs to get the upper hand, and heās able to grip at Mendezās arm before ripping it off.
Leon only has a few seconds to really comprehend what happened to him before Mendez is back on him. Instinct kicks in, and with a little help from the plaga, Leon is able to easily overtake Mendez at this point. His new legs are much stronger and give him the ability to jump and dodge much more easily. Leonās survival instinct is kicked into overdrive, and after he defeats Mendez, he swiftly escapes from the burning building.
Once the danger of the situation has washed away, the plaga seems to settle down and leaves Leon to his own devices again. Unfortunately, this also allows him to finally register the state of his body. Ashley, of course, is also alarmed by the new changes, but upon seeing the briefest flash of distress on Leonās face, she realizes that HER fear is probably the last thing he needs to see. So instead, she cracks a dumb joke.
This ends up being exactly what Leon needs, and after a few reassurances from both Ashley and himself, he quickly falls back into prioritizing the mission. Chiding himself for wasting so much time, he quickly rises to stand... only to promptly fall back down. Turns out without the plaga subconsciously guiding him, he actually has zero idea on how to maneuver his new legs.
The idea of having to relearn how to navigate his body terrifies Leon. By getting used to this as his new ānormal,ā he feels like heās admitting defeat and accepting that this is permanent. He also realizes, however, that if he isnāt able to move properly, the chances of him being able to get Ashley to safety are close to zero. After a brief mental breakdown, he resigns himself to his fate with the hope that he can avoid having the same thing happen to Ashley. And so, him and Ashley spend the next couple minutes practicing how to stand and walk in his ānew heels,ā as Ashley calls much to his chagrin.
OOPS I havenāt been drawing much lately, but I finally sat down and drew some more infected Leon stuff~
Love the idea of him just expressing emotions and discovering the weird new things his body does now. I imagine he worries about him coming off as too scary to other people when in reality they think his new mannerisms are kind of adorable in a way.
Also! I am planning on posting a cohesive backstory to the lore behind this AU soon! So stay tuned for that :)))
ITāS DONE! ITāS FINALLY DONE! I PRESENT MY FINALIZED INFECTED LEON DESIGN!!!
PHEW - this one took a GOOD while, BUT Iām really happy with how this came out! I really wanted to make him as close to the verdugo in design as possible, but with a few minor tweaks! Iāve always been a fan of the third eye that @polarspaz puts in their infected Leon designs, so thatās stayed in all iterations of my designs! I also just really love the idea of Leon having big old dino feet, even if the verdugo just has plain old bug feet (make that man digitigrade I say!)
FINALLY, Iām planning on posting some more in depth backstory for Leonās whole situation, but the general idea is that, similar to many others Iāve seen, the constant stress and injuries Leonās been accruing during his mission spurs his plaga into trying to keep him alive. Heās basically a disaster magnet (although not as bad as Ethan Winters haha), so his plaga advances very quickly, attempting to give him mutations it feels will help in the high stress situations he increasingly finds himself in.
Most of the mutations, although physically change him, donāt do anything terrible to him anatomically (yet). He maintains a mostly human shape, albeit with dinosaur legs and some changes to his jaw, but thatās beside the point! It isnāt until the verdugo fight that the plaga in him reallllly feels threatened, and kicks the mutations into overdrive. Leon thinks that nothing can top the pain of his jaw splitting apart earlier, but is VERY quickly proven wrong when he feels a tail rip out of his spine to defend against the advancing verdugo.
This is when all the mutations his plaga has been slowly working towards suddenly fast forwards to his final mutation state. His jaw, only consisting of 3 mouth pieces, further mutates into the 5-piece mouth of the verdugo. The carapace thatās been slowly covering his body finally overtakes any remaining flesh, slick body plates slotting into place with finality. Although he now sports dagger-like claws, he was allowed to keep all 10 of his fingers - until now. The plaga twists his somewhat human shaped hands and changes them into the 3 fingered claws of the verdugo.
During the state of panic and pain Leon finds himself in, the plaga takes over and gets rid of the threat it has deemed dangerous enough to install all these mutations. Itās only after his plaga has ripped the verdugo to bloody shreds that Leon is able to snap back into reality, surrounded by the pieces of a monster that he has now become.
BEHOLD! After hours of studying, cross referencing, and just STARING, I think Iāve FINALLY cracked the code!
Like @polarspaz, Iāve distinguished 5 major mandibles/mouthparts on each side of its face! I found that the confusing additional maxilla/pincers are actually part of the larger piece (labeled 2 in the image) that covers much of the lower jaw. These all actually fold rather well into the shape we see when the verdugos are robed, with the bottom two pieces (labeled 3 in the image) shaping the āchin!ā
As a result, Iāve modified my design AGAIN for poor Leonā¦
Iām still working through the timeline of his transformation, but Iām thinking that the original design with the much simpler split jaw look is the first mutation Leon experiences in his face. It isnāt until he fights the verdugo that his plaga decides to kick into overdrive and fully push his body to mutate into the very creature heās fighting. I can just imagine the plaga being tired of watching Leon get thrown around and beaten senseless all the time and decides that itās about time to go full bug mode. You gotta fight fire with fire, amirite?
I started the second part of my (extremely frustrating) verdugo studies, and I present to you, my rendition of the jaw!
I spent a reaaaaallllly long time flipping between reference images of the open and closed mouth and I nearly lost my mind trying to figure out how everything folded. BUT! I managed to make SOME sense of it I think!
These are just a few potential ideas for the placement for all those unnecessary mouth pieces! Iām not entirely sure what that bottom āchinā part is, but Iām thinking maybe itās the chelicera folded in a way so that the fangs are hidden?
I also noticed this littleā¦ maxilla? Iām not actually sure what it is (someone who knows bugs can PLEASE chime in here), but itās something? Maybe!?
Anyways, the more I look at this thingās mouth, the more I feel like the designers just took every insect mouth part they could think of and made an amalgamation of it. Itās honestly a miracle thereās not a proboscis thrown in there too!
So I was inspired by @polarspazās latest verdugo art and decided to attempt some sketches myself! It was honestly going well, but I kinda exhausted myself just trying to understand how the arm is structured, and was a bit too tired to fully flesh out the other limbsā¦ and torsoā¦ and faceā¦ honestly, it felt like the longer I spent trying to decipher what I was looking at, the more confused I became š
Either way, I ended up getting a more updated version of my infected Leon design! I aim to make more studies of him from different perspectives soon, I just need to recharge my brain after staring at that overly complicated mess of chitin that is the verdugo
This AU continues to eat at my brain - I present more lore/background to the transformation poor Leon is going through throughout the events of RE4.
I imagine Leon is going through it mentally throughout the entirety of this infection process but heās able to push aside most of the trauma by cracking corny jokes as per usual. It isnāt until he loses his face (literally) and is unable to speak that he truly spirals into his first full-on panic attack. Luckily, Ashley has complete trust in this man by this point and helps remind him that he is just as human as he ever has been, even if heās realllllly not feeling like it right now. Iām kinda picturing a reversal of that scene when Leon has to reassure Ashley that she IS in control and that everything is gonna be okay.
Some more infected Leon stuff. The potential this AU has for body horror, dysmorphia, and pure ANGST is unbelievableā¦ Iām so sorry Leon but how could I resist the opportunity š
I may or may not come up with a rough backstory for this AU. I kinda have a vague sense of what it could be. Obviously, the body horror and psychological horror of becoming the very monster youāre hunting is a major component, BUT I promise that there will eventually be moments of comfort/fluff in this AU!
