I'm choked up about the names Tolkien chose for Sam and Frodo. Samwise (or Banazîr in Westron) literally means "half-wise". And yes, that could easily be a joke about Sam's intelligence (or lack thereof). But I've never liked this interpretation — it feels too mean and too dimissive of Sam's achievements and importance to treat him as "the dumb one". It's true that he is less educated than the other main hobbits. They're all aristocratic hobbits — gentry, if you will — and Sam is Frodo's gardener. One could make the case that he is "half-learned" and there may be something to that. Even so, I couldn't bear the classism of Sam being named only for his socio-ecomonic standing (I hope I'm using that term correctly).

Frodo (Maura in Westron) is from the Old English word "froda", which means "wise." Tolkien was a linguist and was very intentional about the names he chose/created for his stories. There's a lot to unpack about Frodo's name itself, to be sure. But it is not accidental that his name is connected with Sam's.

Half-wise, half Frodo. The one who waited by his bedside in Rivendell, the one who twice INSISTED on going to Mordor, the one who fought off Shelob and scores of orcs, the one who carried the Ring into Mordor itself, the one who carried Frodo up Mount Doom, the one who came back to the Shire and his family, the one who went to the Undying Lands.

Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam. ❤️

Chomping at the bit thinking about the similarities of lotr and andor. Its about the importance of the common man but also the great heros are needed to get the victory, its about people being faced with unimaginable horrors, its about never going home, its about the neccessity of community, and it is absolutely about how evil always falls under its own weight and greed. Apparently this is the kind of story i will go insane for.

thinking about Éowyn and Faramir in the fourth age and how they likely have pretty spectacular fights. Everyone focuses on their romance and how perfect they are for each other, which is so true, but I think part of what makes them perfect is that they're both incredibly strong-willed, and that's absolutely going to lead to clashes.

We know Faramir can be straightforward and sharp (especially with his family; see also "The Siege of Gondor" chapter), and I think part of how he shows respect is that he doesn't mince his words or give platitudes. That means he's going to call Éowyn on her shit (rightfully or not rightfully) at times. Éowyn is firey, and she's going to snap back, and they're going to go back and forth like that for a while until they each feel satisfied that they've made their points. I also think that this sort of dynamic between them points to a larger matter: how fighting isn't always bad in a relationship, it can actually bring people closer together when it leads to honest expression of passion/emotion, open communication, and when it is under-girded by mutual respect and trust. Which, for Farawyn, is definitely the case.

I don't think Tolkien is a good fantasy writer because he scored the highest at some objective Best Fantasy Book Test that every fantasy writer has to take, I think he's a good fantasy writer because he created a world based on things that he was interested in. I feel like a lot of fantasy writers think that they need to create a whole language for their world because Tolkien did and obviously his books are the best so they have to emulate him, but Tolkien did that because he was a linguistics nerd. I think the lesson to be learned from him is not that you have to include elves and deep history and new languages, but that you have to write endlessly about the things you are a huge nerd about and use those things to create your fantasy world

In the lotr movies, Theoden tells Eowyn that he’s left instruction for the people to follow her rule if he dies. There is no exception for if Eomer should live. He’s not even mentioned.

That, coupled with the fact that Eowyn is wearing a crown at the end of the movie and Eomer is not…

Eowyn is the queen of Rohan in movie canon and will pretend that I can think of no other explanation.

Behold Thingol’s throne.

This is meant to be a Gondorian mural from the early fourth age in reference to the lore of the first age, so the symbolism is in reference to that. This mural was requested by my husband due to the toilet here being ridiculously tall and hence we call it ‘Thingol’s throne’
