Let's Do This

So I started this tumblr as a way to make a record of my brunchings, and to record places I want to try in the future.

BUT my old phone was in its death throws the last few months I had it. It was an absolute pain to use, and it didn't have a great camera anyway.

Well I have I have an amazing new phone now (#teampixel), and it's time I get this party started.

Without further ado, here's what I had for brunch this weekend:

The Beyond Burger at Cup Cafe (Hotel Congress, Tucson) is a veggie burger—vegan actually. It was okay but, I really like cheese on my veggie burgers, and I think it was meant to taste like meat? Not sure cause, well I don't eat meat, and have never eaten burgers so like, I could be wrong, but in any case, the taste wasn't great. I got green chilies on it too—I've never had anything with green chilies that I didn't like but, I would not order this again.

On the other hand, the bloody Maria I got to go with it was SO GOOD. Cup Cafe's build-your-own bloody Mary bar is BRILLIANT. Sorry I don't have a pic, I guess I was too excited to drank it up. Ya know? I got mine with tequila instead of vodka (hence, bloody Maria), and with roasted garlic, cucumber, jalapeño, goat cheese, and a black pepper rim.

My friend Ali has these cinnamon pancaks (I'm going to call them pancaks because I like to, and it's my blog and I can DO WHAT I WANT). I tried a bit and they were guuuud.

I can't really show you the dishes all my brunchmates had because I was brunching with the Brunch Babes, and there were way too many dishes to record, but check out the @BrunchBabesTucson Instagram to see more.

Yes so Brunch Babes Tucson is just this cool event thing that got started recently in Tucson. Or founder organizes brunches and we show up when I want/can and just like have a chill brunch while making new friends.

I'm all about it really. I just needed more brunchmates you know?

We're brunching again next weekend, so hopefully new post then.

I thought Ali was gonzo, attending an internship in DC. But then I saw her in LA 2 weekends ago, and she's suddenly back in T-town this weekend, and I'll be seeing her at a wedding in another 2 weeks, so it's almost as if she never left.

She said she, "Had some business to take care of". I guess by that she meant karaoke and brunch…

And what does she want to do when she's only in town for 2 days? Well, aside from karaoke that I couldn't make it to because I had other plans—brunch!

We hit up Even Stevens, a place we had been eyeing. We found it to be above and beyond expectations. ❇ Food was 👍👍👍 ❇ Prices weren't bad ❇ $3 mimosas (that were of ample size) ❇ Live acoustic guitar ❇ Bottomless French toast ❇ Gorgeous interior

I almost ordered the stuffed French toast, but my eye landed on the Jackfruit Torta at the last minute, and I was intrigued. I gathered the idea was to use jackfruit as a meat substitute, and prepare it in a way to simulate carnitas (sort of), which sounds strange, but it was delicious so 💁. Obviously, it didn't taste jack shit (pun intended) like meat, but I wouldn't want it to anyway. It had lots of other tasty vegetables on it, and came with a yummy salad. On nom nom.

I sampled Ali's Bottomless French Toast too. It was p good. I can't wait to go back and try the stuffed French toast, but next time I go, I will walk. It took 5ever to find parking. 🙀 🚘

Today's Brunch Spot: Tallboys [Breakfast*AF] Brunch Squad: Ali, Carmen, Fatimah, Lindsay Brunch orders: breakfast tacos, avotoast, breakfast burrito, poke bowl Yes, please do enjoy those pictures of us, taken before and just after a fly flew up Ali's nose. 👃 😂 Tallboys had a lot of good qualities, and some not so great. This brunch spot is very new to 4th ave, and we love that the sign says "Breakfast AF" (in fact, we thought that was the name of the restaurant at first), so we picked this venue for Ali's goodbye brunch. Ali is leaving us to attend a space policy internship in DC. 😣 It's an awesome opportunity for her, but I will miss one of my main brunch buddies. The first thing I noticed when I sat down was how hot it is in there. The windows are south facing, and some of the booths are right up against them. My seat had nearly direct sunlight on it. It was uncomfortable, but not intolerable (for me—I'm certain some people would have asked for a new booth). I hope they get some better curtains or better AC. My avotoast with goat cheese and egg was delicious 👌👌 although the crust was a bitch to cut through without a knife (I guess I could have just asked for a knife), and the egg was prepared over easy when I asked for over hard. 😢 I look forward to returning and trying the corn cakes and huevos rancheros. My favorite part of brunch though, was the michelada I ordered. That was a good michelada—perfect amount of spice for me. As we were walking out, I noticed some JWST art by the bathrooms. I did not expect to stumble upon space art this morning, so props to whoever selected and hung that there. 👏

Dear brunch diary, Today was a good brunch. I actually didn't wake up with brunch plans. I had plans to meet friends at a local nursery for a Succulents and Mimosas event. When I found Ali and Katie would be arriving 1-2 hours later than anticipated, I asked Lindsay if she wanted to go get brunch while we wait. Since her birthday is coming up, I let her choose the place, and she chose well—Baja Cafe. One of the reasons I love Baja Cafe is the options. I get a different thing every time I go, because there are so many options, and so many dishes that I want to try. This morning I had the black bean burger, which was good, but the patty was very mushy-gooey. I like a patty that's firmer, and doesn't ooze out of the bun when you bite into it. It was delicious, and I did devour it despite the ooze. 🍔 Lindsay had The Leprechaun, one of the many eggs benedict available. I don't remember what exactly was on it but, corned beef and cabbage or something like that. 🍀 So THEN we went to Green Things to meet our other friends and get our succulents. We were late to the party y'all. By the time we were getting our plants in their pots, everyone else who had come for the event had finished and left. We had long missed the mimosas. 😟 But we weren't leaving without mini succulent gardens, so we set to work. As we were arranging our succulents in their pots, one of the nursery employees comes along and starts talking to us. That's when we found out that "out of mimosas" meant they were out of orange juice—and did we want some champagne? Yes. Yes we did.

When in California, right? Say what you will about millennials, but #avotoast is delicious shit. This avocado toast is from Fred 62, a diner on Vermont Ave in LA. I worked really hard for today's brunch. Han and I hiked up a steep trail in Griffith Park to see Griffith Observatory—which was awesome! 🔭🌌 There we met up with some friends, who joined us for brunch (I mean I used the word lunch, but, it was brunch.) Maybe the exhausting hike was the reason my (extremely delicious) avocado toast didn't fill me up (could also be because it was a tiny serving 😖). I ordered a "side"of sweet potato fries to add to my belly. The plate of fries I was brought resembled the hill I had just trekked up and down more so than any side dish I've ever seen, but I was hungry, and they were delicious. With a little help from Han, they were devoured (I mean hey, that hike took a lot out of us).
