“Mads insisted on more nudity in Season 3″ —Bryan Fuller
Who will complain huh? @thisismydesignhannibal
Bless Mads and Bryan. Bless their cows. We owe them awe.
Mads real-life Hannibal Lecter Mikkelsen (x)
Half the time, Will doesn’t even have his glasses on, so like does he need them? All those nights he’s wandering about the woods without his glasses, is all he sees something akin to TV static? Is that why he’s always rubbing his eyes? Are they just for Aesthetic? Will “I’m a brooding but intelligent man… how best can I express it?” Graham. Does he alternate between them and contacts depending on the Mood or Convenience? Forgot contacts. Keeps glasses in the car. Does he only wear them on Bad Days when eye contact and human interaction are The Worst. Glasses off. Can’t see people. Much better. Does he
Per the audio commentary on Apéritif (101):
Hugh Dancy’s said in him mind, Will is near-sighted, needs the glasses for driving, etc. When he wears them in the classroom, he’s intentionally using them as a shield. Which Jack points out he’s fully aware of when he pushes Will’s glasses up his nose so he can’t use the rims as a way to avoid eye contact.
Using glasses that way, to avoid eye contact, was something Bryan suggested based on a director he’d worked with who did the same thing. Although Bryan didn’t ever do the Jack thing to said director.
In season one, the eye rubbing has a lot to do with the overall effects of the encephalitis.
1 am Hannibal thoughts
I love that one of the reasons Hannibal ended up getting caught was because he made too many Cannibal puns.

Hannibal is just Bryan Fuller's Modern!AU fan fiction that he hasn't updated in a really long time.
Bryan Fuller pitching Hannibal
“So it’s the cannibal we all know and love- a modern day prequel to his capture- featuring the (b)romance between Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham, a lesser known character that would be great to explore …

Everyone else: Yes we know you love Hannibal and Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy and Bryan Fuller and Caroline Dhavernas and Scott Thomson and Gillian Anderson and Aaron Abrams and Hettienne Park and Laurence Fishburne and the murder husbands and the murder wives and you need season 4 more than oxygen WE GET IT.
Hannibal: A Summary
Hannibal: So I sent him to jail
Will: And then I sent someone to kill him
Hannibal: And then I sent someone to kill him
Will: And then I tried to trap him
Hannibal: And then I stabbed him
Will: I tried to kill him again
Hannibal: I also tried to kill him again
Will: And then he turned himself in
Hannibal: So then I went to jail
Will: And then we killed someone together
Hannibal: And yeah now we’re married
Dr. Lecter’s mesmerizing ties part I
“Nothing would please me more than Mads Mikkelsen becoming the definitive Hannibal Lecter for audiences. And that’s a very big wish, because Anthony Hopkins, those are huge shoes to fill. But it’s a new generation, and it’s a different version of the story, and I think for some members of the audience, Mads is the definitive Hannibal Lecter. He certainly is for me.”
- Bryan Fuller about Mads Mikkelsen [x]
For me too, Bryan. For me too.
They both are. Identically different. AH was then, MM is now. I have no problem with either/or or and/both. I’m just glad it’s here at all
He’s even what my version of book!Hannibal despite the description
Mads. Hands down. Always and forever.
Silence of the Lambs will always be iconic. I adore Mads but you cannot take that performance away from Anthony. He WAS Hannibal first and deserves respect. We’re lucky enough to have another Hannibal to cherish. Two cannibals are better than one 😉
I just prefer the more subtle approach Mads and Bryan brought to the character. While with SotL, everything in the movie screamed creey, dangerous and inhuman at once and Anthony Hopkins gave that a perfect face and body, I love how you catch on every rewatch of Hannibal episodes another small insight behind the person suit and it fascinates me to no end that all the insights are there from the beginning but you have to delve deep into the stories and the character development (and into tumblr metas) to start to really “see”. Marvellous.

Mads Mikkelsen: “No, I haven’t hit my midlife crisis”
Question for Fannibals?
I’ve started watching Hannibal - I’m about four episodes in - and I’m being driven a little crazy because I don’t understand the timeline. Hannibal was in his sixties I think when Silence of The Lambs occurred; he’s younger in Hannibal, but it’s set in the future? Has it ever been addressed by showrunners, or is there any kind of accepted explanation?
Time is weird and iffy in Fuller-verse. Hannibal is detached from his Nazi-rooted timeline, so it’s ostensibly present day, and the Silence events are still in the future (whatever form Fuller imagined them taking - i’m pretty sure he never intended to write Will Graham out of the picture, like Harris did). However, even though he has a thick accent, there is no indication that Hannibal is a recent immigrant - but there’s also no indication that he’s from the USSR. In fact, there’s no sign that there was ever such a thing as the Lithuanian SSR, and that Hannibal is, essentially, a Soviet man, as he’d have to be if he were born in the 1960s instead of the 1930s. ((To keep his character historically accurate, one would not only have to deprive him of any markers of noble upbringing but also have him be born deep in Siberia or Kazakhstan, to exiled parents. No castles for little Hannibal - or Gannibal Gannibalovich Lekteris, as he’d have to be called.))
Geography and climate get the same hand-wavy treatment. It’s always arctic winter in Hannibal’s world, even in balmy states like Virginia. Hannibal and Will easily shuttle back and forth between Maryland and Minnesota for a case - a 20 hour drive in the real world. Will Graham sails almost 5000 miles from Maryland to Italy in a tiny sailboat. Etc.
Fuller-verse technology is as iffy as its history and geography. Cellphones exist but are used only when they don’t interfere with plots Clothes, furnishings, etc. are highly eclectic; and the social mores seem to hail more from the 19th century than the 21st, what with all the careful talking around homosexuality, which seems to remain peccatum illud horribile inter Christianos non nominandum, and the general overwrought forbiddenness and inconceivability of Hannibal’s love for Will.
In short, Fuller’s “Hannibal” is set in the present day, but in a parallel universe where it’s always winter, homosexuality is almost inconceivable yet somehow legal (even Mason resorts to an odd euphemism for his sister’s lesbian preferences), and technology is only sort of modern (Will Graham’s house has a rotary phone for a landline), but none of this matters, because Hannibal is the Devil and capable of time dilation along with all sorts of other superhuman feats.
It’s a very unique, very stylized universe with every kind of pretense except to reality or logic. It’s beautiful, and grand, and overtly magical. Enjoy! :)
I actually just did a bit of research and there were two separate Lithuanian SSR; one in 1940 - 1944 and another from 1944 to 1990.

BIG THANKS to everyone who messaged us this today – we’re still in a bit of shock and we’re incredibly happy to see our fandom’s work appreciated in such a way :)))
This once again shows how blessed we are to have our cast and crew and everyone involved with “Hannibal”. They have shown us Fannibals nothing but kindness and love over the years and we are so happy and grateful for this.

So, so happy it all worked out.
And … super excited and mortified and …. gosh.
This makes me so happy.
Big hugs to everyone involved.

IKR?!! I’m so glad, Jamie!!
Hugh didn’t only get the goodies, he also didn’t just leave them with his publicist or manager to be stored or thrown away, but he kept them (well, at least the bag 😅), and this is so very nice of him, I can’t stop grinning! He has this genuine respect for other people’s work that really warms my heart.
There was a snarky comment on Facebook about her probably carrying dirty socks in this bag, and I’m just like, DAMN, I couldn’t care less if she’ll be carrying around the poopy diapers of their newborn in a few weeks in it!! Seriously?! I’m just devastatingly happy that Claire and Hugh decided to keep a fan-made item that clearly has “Fannibal” written on it AND don’t mind being seen in public with it!!
THIS
@allionne @lovecrimecat I am so ridiculously happy for you, my dear friends who were published in this incredible book and honestly for all of us, because we are so blessed, truly the luckiest fandom in the world. How awesome is that ?!!?
