“COFFEE,” he muttered, pushing his way to the counter; the barista inhaled sharply as her most troubling customer shoved someone away from the counter, “Excuse me.” It was a half-assed apology, and the light haired boy flashed a smile made of perfectly straight teeth, his mother had described it once as a politician’s smile that expressed restraint and politeness. The Maddox’s had a particular charm that had been warped inside Chris somehow, it was threatening and inviting all at once. His order was being handed almost immediately, tanned fingers pulled out the small silver flask filled with vodka out of his pocket (he’d swiped from his dad’s liquor cabinet just before he left the house this morning) and as he mixes a bit of alcohol in with his coffee he takes notice of the watchful gaze of another. “If there’s something gross in the coffee here I expect you to spill that information now or risk ending up in my lawsuit.” Chris remarked, with his traditional dry humor.
Normally Brylee wouldn’t appreciate the subtle rudeness of a stranger pushing themselves in front of her, but she took a moment to understand where they might’ve been coming from. A smile spread across her face, even if it were a little forced. The blonde’s face in front of her was just too darn pretty for her to be mad at. Brylee nodded slightly and a small squeak of a laugh came out even though she didn’t get the joke. ❛ You’re starting rather early, aren’t you ? Never knew those would be a combination. ❜ She spoke, referring to the silver flask in between his long fingers. Brylee looked past him for a moment and then proceeded to pay for the boy’s coffee. Not that this was anything out of the ordinary; Brylee always bought coffee for people. Typically not ones that were like this, but Brylee admired how conversation easily sparked.
A CIGARETTE HANGS PRECARIOUSLY FROM HER LIPS, threatening to fall at the slightest of movements. Grey smoke curls from the end, fading into the air around her, a small death that will go unnoticed by most, but not by her. Her hazel hues notice everything, every shift in movement, every withering plant. She’s a silent observer, quieter than she’s ever been as she drowns her lungs in nicotine, her thoughts consumed by the secret she’s harboring, an anchor weighing her down. But her attention is caught by movement, and her eyes snap up to find the arrival, another person joining her outside in the brisk night air. Instead of acknowledging them, however, she averts her gaze and takes another drag from her cigarette, hopeful that if she remains silent they’ll walk right by without noticing her, without attempting to initiate a conversation.
THE SOUND OF HER HEELS CLACKED AGAINST THE PAVEMENT, making Brylee count the number of times it did so just to pass the time. She was making her way across campus when she noticed the figure of a girl standing, holding a toxic substance against her lips. Brylee didn’t intend on saying anything. She kept her head low, with her brown curled locks bouncing in the wind. That was when things took a turn, and the heel beneath her feet slipped. Brylee took a fall, and she fell hard. With one step and the next she found herself in pain, laying on the concrete, a wince escaped her lips. Inside she desperately hoped that the mysterious girl standing hadn’t seen her fall. How embarrassing, right ? The girl looked so cool just smoking a cigarette. How lame must she have looked falling over nothing, right in front of her.
If I haven’t informed you yet then allow me to announce that I am the winner of this stupid contest for Professor Sterling’s class. I don’t know why he thought having students compete against each other would be a good idea. Especially when the prize is being excused from the final exam — like, who wouldn’t want to fuckin’ win? ‘Course the competition hasn’t even begun, but let’s get real here there isn’t anyone on my level when it comes to… well, everything. The only real competition is that fuckin’ dickhead, Michael Westbrook acting like he didn’t suck off Professor Sterling before his lecture. The stains on his shirt scream otherwise.
❛ You’re saying you don’t have to take the final exam ? What the heck ? Is your professor even ALLOWED to do that ? I thought that stuff only happened on TV. Now I’m mad I didn’t pick the same major as you, otherwise I would’ve kicked your little butt ! No, but, congratulations. You better study hard. If you’re wrong and you end up not winning, you owe me a milkshake. Sorry. I don’t make the rules. ❜
“You’d think a good thirteen years of subpar education would instill some sense of knowledge into the half-dead brains of university students everywhere, but in the case of whatever douchebag it was that stuck their gum beneath the desk in my Psychology class – that somehow didn’t work out so well for them.”
❛ Psychology ? That’s what I’m majoring in. The condition of the room is pretty disgusting, true. If you’re a firm believer in the just-world hypothesis, then you should have no worries that whoever put the gum there in the first place is going to get the same thing happening to them. ❜
