I really love this post, but I will just say this leaves out one of the coolest parts of this legend! When the gods tried to bind Fenrir, they used special chains to do the job, chains they made themselves, and Fenrir snapped the chains like they were made of wet paper. Knowing that it was still a bad idea to let Fenrir have free reign, even after their best efforts to forge a chain to bind him had failed, the gods turned to who they believed to be superior craftsmen. They turned to the Dwarves.

The dwarves were told to make a chain which would be impossible to break, and so they made a chain out of seven impossible things, a chain of impossibility, taking the form not of a iron chain, but instead of a delicate ribbon. The chain was to be put around Fenrir to bind him, but he was understandably hesitant to have this suspicious ribbon binding him, so he placed a wager.

He would allow the gods to bind him, but only if they swore to free him if he should be unable to break it, and to prove their honesty, he demanded one of the gods to place their hand in his mouth, so that if he were betrayed, he would bite the hand off of the god. Understanding that Fenrir could not be allowed to be free, the god Tyr put his hand in Fenrirs mouth, promptly losing it when the gods refused to free Fenrir. The chain was said to hold until Ragnarok, after which it would break, and Fenrir would Kill Odin.

Fenrir was killed by Vidar, Odin’s son and a half-Jotunn, and the Norse god of vengeance. He avenged his father by using pure strength to literally rip Fenrir’s upper jaw off of his mouth while holding down the lower jaw with his foot.

Don’t fuck with Vidar.
